And they&#8217;re gonna come in here&#8230;\u201d<\/em> \u2013 <strong>Hudson, <em>\u201cAlien,\u201d<\/em> 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century Fox, 1986<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Perhaps the Boston-area English teacher\u2019s commencement address a few months ago was right.<\/p>\n<p>The graduates aren\u2019t special or exceptional, just different.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re different significantly from him, from Gen X\/Yers, boomers.<\/p>\n<p>Helping them be different, better, more tolerant, less violent is one of the main reasons older generations are around.<\/p>\n<p>In their constantly connected, open world, that\u2019s one of the reasons parents have to take more than a passing interest in the kids. They should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Talk with kids about ways to use the internet and cell phones safely<\/li>\n<li>Talk\u00a0with them about ways to behave toward other people online or on the phone<\/li>\n<li>Talk\u00a0with pre-teens and teens about what they do on the internet<\/li>\n<li>Talk\u00a0with kids about what kinds of things should, should not be shared online \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 or on a cell phone<\/li>\n<li>Check\u00a0to see what information is available online about their kids<\/li>\n<li>Check\u00a0their social network site profile<\/li>\n<li>Check which websites your child visits<\/li>\n<li>Friend their children on social media and in the real world<\/li>\n<li>Use\u00a0parental controls and tools to block, filter, monitor their online \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 activities<\/li>\n<li>Use\u00a0parental controls to restrict, guide their phone use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Parents don\u2019t want to scare their teens; they just want to warn them, or as Newt said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>My mommy always said there were no monsters &#8211; no real ones &#8211; but there are.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31719\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-2.jpg?resize=502%2C534\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-2.jpg?resize=502%2C534 502w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-2-282x300.jpg 282w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Just Checkin\u2019 \u2013 <\/strong><em>While teens may feel it is intrusion, it\u2019s important for parents to set online guidelines and then periodically check to ensure they are being followed. We\u2019ve all heard the line \u201cIt\u2019s for your own good.\u201d but it really is.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 Pew Research<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Teens are fervent communicators.<\/p>\n<p>You probably don\u2019t remember that far back, but they\u2019re somewhere between being a child and adult; and in our online world, they\u2019re getting inputs, ideas from everywhere, everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Today, they\u2019re able to continually communicate with everyone who is important \u2013 and irrelevant \u2013 in their lives:\u00a0 friends and peers, parents, teachers, coaches, bosses, other adults and institutions.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re so good at this, there a lot of times we think Ripley was right,<em> \u201cI feel like kind of a fifth wheel around here.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31720\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-3.jpg?resize=442%2C445\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-3.jpg?resize=442%2C445 442w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-3-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-3-297x300.jpg 297w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do It All \u2013 <\/strong><em>Teens text, email, call and talk with little thought about the device they\u2019re using. They have helped other generations become accustomed to and comfortable with online connections and activity.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 Pew Research<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While a lot of folks say all of this online activity is bad for them \u2013 isolating them from the real world, research by OTX indicates they\u2019re a little more complex, more sophisticated, better founded than you might think.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31722\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=496%2C272\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=496%2C272 496w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-5-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 496px) 100vw, 496px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Given a Choice \u2013 <\/strong>While older generations are concerned that teens and pre-tweens are isolating themselves too much from the world around them, teens seem to have a better foundation than you might think. They don\u2019t constantly hide behind their mobile devices; but given a choice, they want to share personal contacts. <strong>Source &#8211; Forrester<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given the choice, teens prefer real friends to online friends, would rather date someone from school than someone from the Internet, like shopping in a store more than shopping online.<\/p>\n<p>The big difference between them and \u201cus\u201d is that for us, being online usually means using our iPad or computer.\u00a0 For teens, being online simply means being online with the device they have, usually a mobile phone and increasingly, a smartphone according to Pew Research.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, 77 percent of teens have a cell phone.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31723\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=378%2C481\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=378%2C481 378w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-6-235x300.jpg 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Hello Out There <em>\u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>A teen without a cellphone is a person being punished or unable to keep in touch with the world around them. We don\u2019t know about you and yours, but our kids couldn\u2019t imagine not having their mobile phone with them 24&#215;7, including having it on the nightstand to grab\u2026just in case.<\/em> <strong>Source \u2013 Pew Research<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Smartphones are gaining teen users. And they use them for everything.<\/p>\n<p>According to Nielsen research, they used an average of 320 MB of data per month on their phones last quarter, an increase of 256 percent over last year.<\/p>\n<p>Messaging is the centerpiece of mobile teen communications.<\/p>\n<p>Their monthly exchanges (SMS and MMS) hit 3,417 per teen last quarter, which is roughly seven messages per waking hour (and you wondered why they didn\u2019t call).<\/p>\n<p>Actually, voice calls declined significantly with this group from an average of 685 minutes to 572 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out, they prefer messaging to calling because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s\u00a0faster (22 percent)<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s\u00a0easier (21 percent)<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s\u00a0more fun (18 percent)<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s\u00a0more easily shared (15 percent)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31724\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=296%2C209\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Why Not Share \u2013 <\/strong><em>For teens, sharing information on the mobile web is like being there. This also presents a challenge because some things shouldn\u2019t be shared and that includes not only personal information but also malware.<\/em> <strong>Source &#8211; ARA<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Pew Research, among the texting teens:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Half\u00a0send 50 or more text messages a day, or 1,500 texts a month; and one in \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 three send more than 100 texts a day, or more than 3,000 texts a month<\/li>\n<li>15\u00a0percent of teens who are texters send more than 200 texts a day, or more \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 than 6,000 texts a month<\/li>\n<li>Boys typically send and receive 30 texts a day; girls typically send and \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 receive 80 messages per day<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0substantial minority are not heavy texters \u2013 22 percent of teen texters \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 send and receive just 1-10 texts a day or 30-300 a month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to messaging, they were busy with the mobile internet, social networking, email, app downloads and app usage.<\/p>\n<p>The older crowd, which only understands the three-minute phone call, tends to agree with Burke, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Look, this whole station is basically a big fusion reactor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The most popular are taking and sharing pictures and playing music:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>83\u00a0percent use their phones to take pictures<\/li>\n<li>64\u00a0percent share pictures with others<\/li>\n<li>60\u00a0percent play music on their phones<\/li>\n<li>46\u00a0percent play games on their phones<\/li>\n<li>32\u00a0percent exchange videos on their phones<\/li>\n<li>31\u00a0percent exchange instant messages on their phones<\/li>\n<li>27 percent go online for general purposes on their phones<\/li>\n<li>23\u00a0percent access social network sites on their phones<\/li>\n<li>21\u00a0percent use email on their phones<\/li>\n<li>11\u00a0percent purchase things via their phones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bishop saw all the things teens could do with their smartphones and said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Not bad for a human.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>O.K., since teens were almost born online and they\u2019re constantly available, it\u2019s pretty easy for marketing folks to believe it\u2019s a great\/easy way for them to reach and influence teens.<\/p>\n<p>Heck, having an exciting, \u201cfun\u201d social media location is an easy (and inexpensive) way to sell them. You know, an exciting place for them to gather and seduce them with great games, music, videos, closed communities.<\/p>\n<p>Sorry folks, they\u2019re smarter than they look.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31726\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=410%2C522\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=410%2C522 410w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Untitled-9-235x300.jpg 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Real Influences <em>\u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>While marketers like to point to the number of friends and Likes they have on their sites, teens tend to use more traditional sources for information and assistance in making their purchasing decisions.
