These new GPUs are the fourth and the fifth GPUs which complete Nvidia&#8217;s Kepler family lineup.\u00a0 This is our second evaluation of a GTX 660 today which is going to focus\u00a0on performance and price and particularly on the\u00a0EVGA GTX 660 2GB Superclocked which etails for $229.<a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/box-card.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31954\" title=\"box-card\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/box-card.jpg?resize=480%2C433\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/box-card.jpg?resize=480%2C433 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/box-card-300x270.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We received a EVGA GTX 660 Superclocked video card from EVGA under NDA late on Monday which kept it out of this morning&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=31852\">GTX 660 launch article featuring the Galaxy GTX 660 GC<\/a>. We compared\u00a0the Galaxy GTX 660\u00a0to its $229 price point&#8217;s direct competitor, the factory overclocked\u00a0HD 7850, as well as\u00a0the GTX 660 Ti and Nvidia&#8217;s\u00a0second-fastest card\u00a0of the last generation, the GTX 570 as well\u00a0as to\u00a0our\u00a0EVGA GTX 460 FTW as a upgrade path.\u00a0\u00a0 The stock GTX 660 completely outperformed the\u00a0highest factory overclocked\u00a0HD 7850 available anywhere\u00a0in 24 of our 24-game benchmark suite &#8211;\u00a0in only 4 games could it be even called &#8220;close&#8221;.\u00a0 And the Galaxy GTX 660 GC\u00a0easily won our ABT Editor&#8217;s Choice award.<\/p>\n<p>We are not going to repeat the same evaluation that we published this morning.\u00a0 If you want to learn about the architecture of the GTX 660 and the GTX 550 as well as to\u00a0see the performance of the Galaxy GTX 660 GC detailed, please see this morning&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=31852\">GTX 660 evaluation here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, we are going to focus on the EVGA GTX 660 Superclocked&#8217;s performance and especially on overclocking it beyond its base clocks which match the highest user\u00a0overclock that we got on the Galaxy GTX 660 GC.\u00a0 Since we were able to get our\u00a0EVGA 660&#8217;s core and memory far beyond the Galaxy clocks, our evaluation will give extra insight into the performance gained from overclocking the core versus overclocking the memory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The EVGA GTX 660\u00a0Superclocked edition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are going to be several varieties of the GTX 660 with their suggested base price starting at $229 which will include some factory overclocked SKUs. EVGA&#8217;s Superclocked GTX 660 is set up for 2- way SLI with one other 660s. What is surprising is that we were able to overclock far past\u00a0our\u00a0Galaxy maximum overclock of their GTX 660 at 1046\/6340MHz to 1115\/7208MHz!!\u00a0 We were able to add an additional +70MHz over the EVGA base clock for a total offset of +135MHz over the base clocks that Nvidia set for the reference GTX 660. On top of that, we were able to get +300MHz on the memory.\u00a0 In fact, we were able to go higher on the memory but stopped when we were no longer getting performance increases.<\/p>\n<p>We did not adjust the EVGA GTX 660 SC&#8217;s voltage. Temperatures were never an issue and the fan profile remained at stock which meant that the GTX 660 is also extraordinarily quiet at maximum load &#8211; the fan profile rarely went over 30% and the temperatures remained well under 60C under the most stressful conditions and highest load in any game that we tested\u00a0which happened to be <em>Battlefield 3<\/em>. The EVGA GTX 660 SC and the Galaxy GTX 660 GC as well as the HIS IceQX HD 7850 are all very quiet cards and it is a toss up as to which one is quieter.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s head to the performance charts to see how the EVGA GTX 660\u00a0SOC compares with the Galaxy 660 GC at stock, Galaxy-clocked and overclocked, as well as against the stock (860\/4800MHz) and overclocked (1000\/5000MHz) AMD HD 7850. As an added bonus, we are going to overclock the EVGA GTX 660 SC as far as it can go without raising the voltage or adjusting the fan profile to see if we can narrow the performance gap with an EVGA GTX 660 Ti at reference speeds.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Performance Summary Charts--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Performance summary charts &amp; graphs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here are the summary charts of 24 modern PC games and 3 synthetic tests. The highest settings are generally chosen and it is DX11 when there is a choice; DX10 is picked above DX9, and the settings are generally ultra or maxed unless specified on the chart. Specific settings are listed on the Main Performance chart. The benches are run at 1920&#215;1200 and 1680&#215;1050.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Main Overall Summary chart<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong>In the first column of the main performance summary chart, the\u00a0HD 7850\u00a0is tested at\u00a0AMD&#8217;s reference clocks and also factory overclocked (column 3).\u00a0 In between\u00a0(3) is a stock GTX 660 while column 4 is a Galaxy GTX 660 at its factory overclock.\u00a0 Column 5 is a EVGA GTX 660\u00a0at EVGA clocks while\u00a0in column 6 is the EVGA 660 clocked as high as we could go on stock voltage and fan profile. Let&#8217;s head for our conclusion.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: The Conclusion--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This has been quite an enjoyable, if far too short,\u00a02-day exploration for us in evaluating our new EVGA GTX 660 Superclocked. It did extraordinarily well performance-wise comparing it to the\u00a0HD 7850 where it brings good performance value at $229.\u00a0\u00a0When we overclocked our EVGA\u00a0GTX 660 SC past the Galaxy GTX 660\u00a0GC clocks, we saw it narrow the performance gap\u00a0with the faster\u00a0reference GTX 660 Ti. We are totally impressed with this cool-running &#8220;value&#8221; enthusiast card which is nearly able to go head to head against the GTX 660 Ti in a few games.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We see good overclockability with reasonable quietness at stock voltage and fan profile even when the GTX 660 Superclocked is overclocked even beyond EVGA&#8217;s factory overclock and it scales well in performance. It is\u00a0as quiet as\u00a0the\u00a0HIS IceQX Turbo\u00a0HD 7850 or the custom cooled Galaxy GTX 660 GC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For its $229 price,\u00a0overclocked it\u00a0gives more than 85% of the performance of the reference GTX 660\u00a0Ti which is priced at $299 and it completely beats up on even a factory-overclocked HD 7850. From our results, we can expect\u00a0The EVGA GTX 660 SC to be a bit faster than the factory overclocked HD 7870s. At $229 it is priced to match the overclocked HD 7850&#8217;s while challenging and beating the more expensive HD 7870 in performance. And for the same price as the reference version, the EVGA GTX 660 Ti offers better performance than the reference\u00a0660s while giving the gamer EVGA&#8217;s excellent support and warranty as well as a great community.<\/p>\n<h2>Pros<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0EVGA GTX 660 SC provides excellent performance for a $229 card and soundly beats even the highest factory overclocked HD 7850 across the board.<\/li>\n<li>Overclockability is acceptable &#8211; GPU Boost works as advertised.<\/li>\n<li>The cooling design is quiet and efficient; the card and well-ventilated case stay cool.<\/li>\n<li>It is possible to use two of these cards for SLI performance without needing a big PSU<\/li>\n<li>3D Vision 2 and PhysX enhance gaming immersion and both are improved using the GTX 660 compared to the older 400 series.<\/li>\n<li>3-panel Surround plus an accessory display can now be driven off of a single GTX 660 by requiring a single passive adapter; HD 7850 generally requires two, and tearing is noticeably less with Surround compared to Eyefinity<\/li>\n<li>New AA allows for high performance without jaggies in deferred shading lighting engines; TXAA solves the shimmering and crawling when the camera is in motion<\/li>\n<li>Adaptive VSync reduces stuttering while retaining the advantages of minimizing tearing.<\/li>\n<li>The EVGA GTX 660 SC is a great value\u00a0for the same price as\u00a0the reference version. If you currently game on an older generation video card such as a GTX 460 or older, you will do yourself a big favor by upgrading.<\/p>\n<p>The competition is hot and AMD offers their own set of features including Eyefinity 2.0\u00a0and the recently faster and lower-priced GHz editions.
