Maybe in a few years the excitement will mellow out and we can figure out what it is, what to do with it and how to manage it.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Whatever It Is<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Business thinks it\u2019s good; folks on the street think it\u2019s good \u2026 even though a Citrix-sponsored report from Wakefield Research found we don\u2019t have a clue:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 51 percent of folks said stormy weather would interfere with cloud computing<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1\/3 see the cloud as a future thing, even though 95 percent use cloud services<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 59 percent believe tomorrow\u2019s workplace will be in the cloud<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 22 percent said they pretend to know the cloud and how it works<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The majority said \u201cthe cloud\u201d is an actual cloud or related to weather<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 16 percent said it was a computer \u201cthingy\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 54 percent said they never use the cloud, even though the bank online, shop online, use social network sites, play online games, store photos\/music\/videos\/files<\/p>\n<p>Trying to understand the confusion, Flint Lockwood asked, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>I don&#8217;t even know the rules. Is there like a point system, or is it to the death?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The folks attending Benioff\u2019s Dreamforce \u201912 \u2013 especially sales\/marketing types \u2013 packed sessions to hear GE\u2019s Jeff Immelt, Virgin\u2019s Richard Branson, former secretary of state Colin Powell and members of the Salesforce team so they could understand and improve their use of file-sharing and all the stuff in the cloud.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32213\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=232%2C173\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Bigger than Big \u2013 <\/strong><em>Big Data is increasingly important to companies that are slowly, sometimes painfully, learning that there is untapped wealth in the cloud if they can just figure out what all the information means and how to use it to sell even more of everything. Dreamforce \u201912 showed thousands of sales, marketing and IT people that Salesforce had the tools\/services to get the most from Big Data. <strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Benioff\u2019s team has done a super job of pulling together solutions that will help companies do a better, more effective job of harvesting Big Data in The Cloud.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of reasons \u2013 beside the fact that all of your clicks\/taps are there \u2013 that companies are rushing to use cloud services.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32214\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=458%2C256\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=458%2C256 458w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-42-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Optimistic Opportunities \u2013 <\/strong><em>Computing and storage in The Cloud is not only cost-effective,\u00a0 it seems to free up a firm\u2019s precious capital and give them greater operating flexibility to meet the market\u2019s constant and rapid changes. <strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Cloud is an efficient place for companies that are now global in nature to carry out their business processing, DSS (decision support systems), VOIP (voice over internet protocol) and improve the management of their IT infrastructure, applications development, web infrastructure and collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yes, there\u2019s also the fact that you\u2019re there and they want to\/need to sell stuff to you.<\/p>\n<p>As Earl Devereaux said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>My chest hairs are tingling! Something&#8217;s wrong.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sure, there are a few issues, problems that have to be worked out; but what the heck, what\u2019s business\/life without a few \u201cissues\u201d?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32215\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-52.jpg?resize=531%2C280\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-52.jpg?resize=531%2C280 531w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-52-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Bumps in the Road \u2013 <\/strong><em>The Cloud for computing and storage is not without its risks and downsides. It requires a skilled and experienced IT team to weigh the pros and cons of content in The Cloud. <strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Probably the biggest issue companies, cloud services and ordinary people have about The Cloud is the fact that there is a growing army of hackers, whackers, phisherpeople and cyberthieves who also just love harvesting personal information from the Big Data.<\/p>\n<p>But little things like that don\u2019t bother people who have grown up never knowing anything but being online &#8212; millennials, teens, preteens.<\/p>\n<p>For us, it\u2019s like Flint Lockwood said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>It&#8217;s okay, it&#8217;s just pain.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And if it\u2019s good enough for them its gotta\u2019 be good enough for companies that have to move as fast as their illusive and fast-moving markets (customers).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32216\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-61.jpg?resize=511%2C314\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-61.jpg?resize=511%2C314 511w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-61-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Huge Uptick <em>\u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>Despite the numerous downside issues and risks; cloud services, including virtualized computing and storage, will continue to grow and become tougher to manage. It\u2019s so popular that every dog and cat has a cloud strategy. <strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not only is The Cloud at the top of Gartner\u2019s Hype Cycle, it\u2019s the number one selling goal for organizations large and small. You know, Google, Amazon,\u00a0 Salesforce, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, box, dropbox, Intel, Unisys, Dell, Oracle, HP, EMC, Sally\u2019s Laundromat (O.K., we made that up but\u2026).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-32217\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=565%2C320\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=565%2C320 628w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-71-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Step or Jump \u2013 <\/strong><em>Media and marketing enthusiasm for selling and using The Cloud has undoubtedly convinced more than a fair share of firms to put their faith and future in someone\u2019s cloud service. It doesn\u2019t really matter if you can\u2019t identify what it is, you\u2019re using The Cloud.<\/em> <strong><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Cloud is so hot, it\u2019s cool.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re nothing\/nobody if you don\u2019t have a cloud solution or use the cloud \u2026 even if you don\u2019t have a clue!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oh Darn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The only problem is that when something sounds too good to be true it usually isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>The Cloud is no different.<\/p>\n<p>The Cloud \u2013 your business, your personal cloud \u2013 isn\u2019t something fluffy, soft, pure. It\u2019s the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century\u2019s version of the industrial revolution.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32218\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-81.jpg?resize=343%2C200\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-81.jpg?resize=343%2C200 343w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-81-300x174.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Ready to Serve \u2013 <\/strong><em>Firms large and small are building, selling and servicing \u201cclean, fresh, wholesome cloud services around the globe. Utilities like them because they operate so inefficiently that they are a steady source of electricity sales. Oh yes, and they consume a steady stream of servers and storage devices.<\/em> <strong><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>U.S. federal data centers grew from 432 in 1998 to 2,094 in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>This is small compared to The Cloud service data centers that exist and are being constructed every day around the globe to meet business\u2019 needs as well as all the social media Facebookers, Tweeters, YouTubers, photo loaders, you name it.<\/p>\n<p>Hiding in those data centers are long-forgotten emails, lost vacation photos, dumb\/dumber videos, old online orders, healthcare\/pharmaceutical research data&#8211; meaningless stuff stored next to critical, vital and legally required data.<\/p>\n<p>And the volume of \u201cimportant stuff\u201d keeps growing.<\/p>\n<p>EMC and IDC estimated that more than 1.8 trillion Gigabytes (trust us, that\u2019s a crapload of stuff) of digital information was created globally last year.<\/p>\n<p>Even though only about 20 percent of that information will ever be accessed, social media sites and cloud services can\u2019t take a chance that you don\u2019t get the information you need the moment you click, most of that data is kept on hard drives in the data center so it can be delivered <strong><em>BAM!!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even though three-quarters of the stuff being stored is for ordinary folks Jeremy Burton, a data storage expert says, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>It is absolutely a race between our ability to create data and our ability to store and manage data.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Typically, data centers are overbuilt and overprovisioned just in case the processing\/storage is needed.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, data centers operate at seven to twelve percent of capacity because to be honest, you and I are impatient.<\/p>\n<p>If you have to wait 10 seconds for a website to respond, you click away to another site.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t get your spreadsheet or video loaded and running instantly, you slap your screen.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t matter what you want, even if you\u2019re like mayor Shelbourne, <em>\u201cA turkey stuffed inside a pizza, the whole thing deep-fried and dipped in chocolate.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To keep you happy and keep you as a customer, servers and storage devices are constantly powered as is the cooling system, backup batteries, generators, all the things in the datacenters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We Want It IT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amazon recently said their Glacier storage service would be available (most of it small business, personal stuff) 99.9999 percent of the time.<\/p>\n<p>That stuff ain\u2019t cheap.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>NY Times<\/em> recently found that a single data center takes more power than a medium-sized town; and worldwide digital warehouses use about 30 billion watts of electricity, which is roughly equivalent to the output of 30 nuclear power plants.<\/p>\n<p>But wait, don\u2019t blame The Cloud service providers or corporate customers.<\/p>\n<p>The Facebook, Alibaba, Twitter, YouTube folks (4B of the 7B people on the planet who use the Inet and social sites) are the problem because they expect anything, anytime, anywhere and <strong><em>NOW!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Pogo said, <em>\u201cWe have met the enemy and it is us.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The difference with outsourcing this time around is that it\u2019s in The Cloud.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32219\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-91.jpg?resize=350%2C209\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-91.jpg?resize=350%2C209 350w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Untitled-91-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>The only problem with The Cloud is that data, that information, that stuff all has to rest somewhere until the microsecond you want it\/need it.<\/p>\n<p>When you get it, you\u2019re as happy as Sam Sparks when he said, <em>\u201cIt&#8217;s a solid, it&#8217;s a liquid, it&#8217;s a viscoelastic polymer made out of polypeptide chains but you eat it!
