People will come from all over, they&#8217;ll do exactly what I tell &#8217;em.\u201d<\/em> <strong>\u2013 Carnegie, <em>\u201cThe Book of Eli,\u201d<\/em> Warner Brothers (2010)<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We know you\u2019re overworked and underpaid.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re multitasking at every turn.<\/p>\n<p>You have a fairly decent job, but you have to handle a ton of disruptive stuff.<\/p>\n<p>You know:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Someone hollers they need some info\/help<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Projects are behind because \u201cthey\u201d haven\u2019t responded<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Facebook pages need some written, photo updates<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Twits are spraying across your screens (computer, tablet, phone)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Emails keep stacking up in your inbox<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There are forums you need to follow to stay current<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s an opportunity to write really good stuff, highlight your brilliance, make your target wither to a quivering mass of Jello.<\/p>\n<p>Ah, the power of words \u2026 you hit the Enter key.<\/p>\n<p>As your masterpiece flies to sites, screens and big databases around the globe; you read it again.<\/p>\n<p>Wouldn\u2019t it be great if the Internet was like live radio, TV?<\/p>\n<p>You know, with a 10-second delay.<a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Untitled-24.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32674\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Untitled-24.jpg?resize=263%2C198\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Write, Delete \u2013 <\/strong>It\u2019s human to want to express your frustration, irritation when you\u2019ve been wronged and want to punish someone. Write it, get it out of your system, hit Delete, start over and you have a second chance to address the issues professionally, rather than personally.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Escape and Delete keys would really get a workout!<\/p>\n<p>It would beat the heck outta\u2019 <em>\u201cI would like to recall that note about your questionable parentage.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Vint Cerf, one of the founders of the Internet, didn\u2019t foresee that people would actually be living on the web.<\/p>\n<p>But he did see dangerous trends emerging, <em>&#8220;I predict that by 2010, 100 percent of network traffic will be packetized.\u00a0 None of it will be voice because we will be too mad at each other from sending flame e-mails.&#8221;\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Internet and the Web are global forums, and people have different views that can\/should be heard.<\/p>\n<p>Or, as Eli explained, \u201c<em>It means that you know something even if you don&#8217;t know something.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re O.K. with criticism. We\u2019re fine with disagreement. But it\u2019s disheartening how hostile \u201cordinary\u201d people are to each other online.<\/p>\n<p>The kneejerk <em>\u201ceveryone else is an idiot\u201d<\/em>approach<em> <\/em>is poisoning the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>Back when Vint and the rest were working on their dream of a global village, they had this great idea that people could work out their differences.<\/p>\n<p>They thought direct communications would make us realize we have a lot in common no matter where we live or what our beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it has enabled us to find new ways to attack, to embarass. <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve become desensitized.<\/p>\n<p>The old adage, <em>&#8220;if you have nothing nice to say, don&#8217;t say anything at all&#8221;,<\/em> became\u2026old.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few ways to handle the haters and not become one yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t give the hater public attention\/validation, don\u2019t follow him\/her, don\u2019t link to them, don\u2019t help them.<\/p>\n<p>Respond in a calm, professional manner without stooping to their level as though the world was watching\u2026they are.<\/p>\n<p>Then filter them out and continue your quest. He complimented Clement Atlee without resorting to much of today\u2019s web writing, <em>\u201cA modest man, who has much to be modest about.\u201d<\/em> <strong>Image Source \u2013 wordpress<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Winston Churchill, a person who really knew how to use words, understood the Internet before the Internet was even developed, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t take comfort in the fact that you\u2019re anonymous on the Internet so you can say anything you want.<\/p>\n<p>Like the <em>\u201c<strong>Book of Eli,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> your words will live\u2026forever.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, Eli will say, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>People had more than they needed. We had no idea what was precious and what wasn&#8217;t.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hostility doesn\u2019t replace meaningful conversations; online communications can\u2019t replace in-person relationships because body language and voice tone don\u2019t travel well on the Net.<\/p>\n<p>Or as Eric Schmidt, Google chairman, said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>The Internet is the first thing that humanity has built that humanity doesn&#8217;t understand, the largest experiment in anarchy that we have ever had.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32670\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=229%2C229\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=229%2C229 229w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Untitled-42-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Satisfaction \u2013 <\/strong>There\u2019s an elegance about good writing, even when you don\u2019t agree with what was written. Focusing on the issues, instead of the person, is more logical; but today, the buffer of the Internet makes it way too easy to lose sight of the fact that there is a live individual on the receiving end instead of a target. <strong>Source \u2013 Charlie Schultz<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When you\u2019re contributing online, keep a few points in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tone Down Your Language<\/strong> &#8212; Written text can easily be misinterpreted. Avoid the use of strong or offensive language and the excessive use of exclamation points. If you feel strongly about a point, write it as a draft, review it, remove the strong language, think, post<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep a Straight Face<\/strong> \u2013 Humor, sarcasm are tough without facial, voice tone clues<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be Forgiving<\/strong> \u2013 Deal with issues privately and offline if possible. \u00a0It may have been unintended, so give the writer a chance to modify, delete or leave on their own<\/li>\n<li><strong>Test for Clarity<\/strong> \u2013 It may be perfectly clear to you when you write the message, but read it aloud to see if it flows smoothly.\u00a0 If it\u2019s something that might affect\/reflect on your business, have someone else review it before setting it free<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>DON\u2019T TYPE IN ALL CAPS&#8211;<\/strong> This is regarded as shouting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consider the Privacy of Others\u2019 &#8211;<\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0Ask for permission if you want to forward someone\u2019s content to others to avoid inadvertently distributing personal or company private information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be Brief &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0Be as concise as possible when contributing. Your points may be missed if hidden in a flood of text<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stick to the Point &#8212;<\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t waste others&#8217; time by going off on irrelevant tangents<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32671\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Untitled-52.jpg?resize=293%2C178\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Word Power \u2013 <\/strong>Words well-crafted into sentences, paragraphs and blogs\/columns\/postings can illuminate people\u2019s understanding\/awareness around the globe. Lobbed at people, they can also do serious harm. Choose your words carefully, use them wisely. <strong>Source \u2013 photos.com<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Err on the Kindness Side<\/strong> \u2013 They may look like nothing but a string of words to you but if you\u2019re reading a post, remember it comes from a human being. If you feel it is your \u201cresponsibility\u201d to correct the correspondent, do it in a calm, professionsl manner.\u00a0 Stay away from controversial topics like politics, religion, race, sex, etc.\u00a0 Most cyber flare-ups occur because of these discussions. Be especially careful when dealing with people from other cultures and countries online. Be polite and respectful and don\u2019t be afraid to ask how they do things where they live. It\u2019s a great way to learn. When you hurt someone\u2019s feelings or they feel you belittled them, apologize.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t hurt\u2026honest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t Write When Angry<\/strong> \u2013 If you\u2019re writing an email, Twit or IM when you\u2019re angry, review it carefully, put it aside for awhile and delete it.\u00a0 Then start over.\u00a0 It will be better, you\u2019ll feel better, the online world will be better.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Think Before You Hit the Send Button <\/strong>\u2013\u00a0Think carefully about the content of your message before contributing it. Once sent to the group, there\u2019s no taking it back. Consider that grammar and spelling errors also reflect on you; and once it\u2019s sent, there are no take-backs.\u00a0 Everyone can see it \u2013 friends, family, bosses, prospective bosses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While there are a number of studies that say YouTube is becoming the people\u2019s source of getting news, there is still a lot of strength in the written word; and that probably won\u2019t change in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>There are lots of examples where people have embellished their education and experience, and it has come back to haunt them.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s business recruiters often \u201cGoogle\u201d a candidate and old messages from their youth have cost them a great new position. Check yourself out from time to time just to ensure nothing is out there that is too personal that will embarrass you or have people question your professionalism, ethics.<\/p>\n<p>Written words may again become so powerful, so valuable we\u2019ll hear Carnegie say, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>If the words are from the book, it&#8217;s happened before and it&#8217;ll happen again.
