If you want to cool a Phenom II X4 or even an X6, a value CPU cooler such as a <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?tag=hyper-n212\">Coolermaster Hyper N 212+<\/a> will suffice. Even Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs such as Core i5 and Core i7 run relatively cool until you begin to push the core speeds up to 4.5GHz or so. Unless you are supplying a relatively high voltage to most CPUs, a budget cooler will work nicely. Even stock heatsinks are evolving to keep up with the hotter running quad-core and hex-core CPUs. Of course, the earlier &#8220;Bulldozer&#8221;\u00a0FX series of AMD CPUs almost require watercooling or a high-end air cooler and a very beefy power supply unit (PSU) if you are really serious about <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28491\">an overclock in excess of 4.4GHz as we were<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Sapphire Vapor-X CPU cooler is designed for overclocking so we will test how it can affect practical overclocking of our Core i7-3770K.\u00a0 Where does it sit in terms of price to performance when compared with other premium CPU coolers?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Importance of Cooling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Intel\u2019s newest Core i7 and i5 CPUs mark an advance in processing power, but they definitely require a higher quality heatsink than for Core2Quad CPUs, or for overclocking our older AMD Phenom II 980 BE X4; especially if you want to cool them without excessive noise. Our test CPU, the Intel Core i7-3770K, also requires excellent cooling once you approach 4.5GHz as its stock clock is only 3.6GHz.\u00a0Sapphire offers an easy entry into the world of premium air cooling with the Vapor-X which is a complete package that offers everything you need to cool your overclocked CPU, including thermal paste.<\/p>\n<p>Heat is drawn away from the CPU by the base of the heatsink and is transferred through the vapor chamber and up into the array of hi-grade aluminum fins for dissipation. Two large 120mm fans spin &#8211; one on each side of the heatsink fins array in a \u201cpush-pull\u201d configuration &#8211;\u00a0blow CPU-heated air through and away from the heatsink.\u00a0 The illustration below is from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapphiretech.com\/presentation\/product\/?cid=7&amp;gid=1192&amp;sgid=1193&amp;pid=1751&amp;psn=&amp;lid=1&amp;leg=0\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.sapphiretech.com\/presentation\/product\/?cid=7&amp;gid=1192&amp;sgid=1193&amp;pid=1751&amp;psn=&amp;lid=1&amp;leg=0', 'Sapphire&#8217;s site.']);\" >Sapphire&#8217;s site.<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.sapphiretech.com\/images\/heatsink_fluid_1.jpg?resize=393%2C417\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>The fans are power-managed (PWM) by\u00a0the PC&#8217;s BIOS and their speed can be adjusted there.\u00a0 So they will run at a low RPM when your CPU is idle and when\u00a0it is relatively cool,\u00a0and then ramp up when it is under load and hot.\u00a0 The goal is to have the fans stay reasonably quiet while keeping your CPU cool, even while overclocked.<\/p>\n<p>The cooling fins are dense and with four heatpipes working with Sapphire&#8217;s Vapor-X chamber, it should dissapate an overclocked CPU&#8217;s heat to 200W TDP.\u00a0 Of course, we want to see how that translates into our Core i7-3770&#8217;s ability to overclock and how it compares to the other coolers that we have tested.\u00a0 Sapphire actually says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Designed to handle 200 Watt CPU as the baseline, expanded headroom for overclockers.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-32794\" title=\"HS-fins\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/HS-fins1.jpg?resize=288%2C367\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/HS-fins1.jpg?resize=288%2C367 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/HS-fins1-235x300.jpg 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Vapor-X CPU cooler\u00a0ships with a\u00a0Sapphire multi-socket mounting system that\u00a0should be\u00a0an easy and very straightforward installation for our Ivy Bridge\u00a0Intel LGA 1155 platform.\u00a0It is\u00a0also adapted for 1156 and 775 platforms and Intel&#8217;s latest extreme 6-core CPUs on LGA 1366 and 2011 as well as AMD socket AM2, AM2+ and AM3\/AM3+ platforms as well as AMD&#8217;s FM1\/FM2. This coolers\u00a0is \u201cuniversal\u201d \u2013 engineered to fit any modern Intel or AMD CPU\u2019s cooling needs \u2013 overclocked or stock.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Vapor-X Universal CPU Cooler<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Vapor-X is designed for overclocking and it is engineered to easily fit any modern socket as it is held securely in place using a custom Sapphire backplate to fit your motherboard. you are stuck with Thermaltake&#8217;s slightly noisier fans as\u00a0they\u00a0are built into the clip-on\u00a0housing.<\/p>\n<p>To cool well, there has to be a great contact surface.\u00a0 The Vapor-X has a relatively rough machined surface (below) compared with the competing Frio\u00a0which has a smoother surface, although it does not approach the mirror-like quality of the much more expensive Noctua NH-DH14.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32896\" title=\"ContactPlate-surface\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/ContactPlate-surface.jpg?resize=365%2C345\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/ContactPlate-surface.jpg?resize=365%2C345 365w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/ContactPlate-surface-300x283.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">With many super-smooth high-end coolers, the end user should only use a dab of any thermal compound; specifically, a drop 4-5 mm in diameter in the center of the HS contact plate (about the size of a grain of rice). This cooler looks great &#8211; especially running with their\u00a0blue LEDs lit up brightly. The last time we ran a comparison, we got our Core i7\u00a03770K to\u00a04.9GHz\u00a0stably\u00a0under water with\u00a0the Thermaltake\u00a0Water2.0 Pro and also with our Noctua NH-DH14; although with the Noctua, it was running much hotter than we liked.\u00a0 The Thermaltake Water 2.0 Performer was able to manage 4.8GHz.\u00a0 All of these were\u00a0extra-ordinarly good overclocks for Ivy Bridge, considering the capabilities of the respective coolers and their higher manufacturer recommended pricing than the Vapor-X.<\/p>\n<p>Now we are going to set up our\u00a0Sapphire Vapor-X\u00a0CPU cooler. style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0Vapor-X cannot keep the 4.7GHz overclock although it lasts quite awhile with all cores fully loaded by OCCT.\u00a0 We were also conservative using OCCT\u00a0in that we set our max upper temp at 100c in the settings\u00a0although the upper limit when the CPU throttles is actually 105C.<a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/VaporX-4.5g-maxgaming.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32903\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Under gaming, however, 4.7GHz as an overclock for our i7-3770K is quite doable with the Vapor-X.\u00a0 95C is the very hottest temperature that we\u00a0recorded after one of our benching sessions (including running synthetic benches like Vantage).\u00a0 Running our Core i7-3770K at 4.7GHz is pretty good for a 200W 4-heatpipe cooler!\u00a0\u00a0 Under full load, the Sapphire&#8217;s dual fans never became irritating although they became more noticeable over the background noise in a quiet room.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s head for our conclusion<\/p>\n<h2><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Conclusion--><br \/>\n<strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to cooling your overclocked hot Intel or AMD CPU efficiently and quietly,\u00a0Sapphire may be\u00a0the new\u00a0company to turn to.\u00a0 If you have a Core i7 or i5 that you really want to push to its\u00a0reasonable\u00a0yet quiet\u00a0overclock by safely using air-cooling, the\u00a0Vapor-X may be for you.
