All I want is for the candle to glow one last time rather than curse the darkness.\u201d<\/em> <strong>\u2013 Oscar Madison, <em>\u201cThe Odd Couple II,\u201d<\/em> Paramount, 1998<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Our office system was recently used to watch three segments of Yahoo\u2019s mini-series <strong><em>Cybergeddon <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(the nine segments total 95 minutes).<\/p>\n<p>Except for the less than subtle product placement it was as good as lots of movies and better than most TV fare.<\/p>\n<p>Then, as a family, we used our large-screen, interconnected TV to watch the presidential debates. O.K., not as \u201ca family,\u201d but we were in the same room.<\/p>\n<p>The wife watched the big screen and another analysis on her ultrabook.<\/p>\n<p>Our son streamed it from YouTube on his iPad.<\/p>\n<p>Our daughter watched and Tweeted on her smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>I watched a little of everyone\u2019s on everything and was reminded of Oscar\u2019s comments, <em>\u201cI don&#8217;t care. I agreed. I did my part.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Only Screen that Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It reminded me of recent comments by Mitch Joel, president of Twist Image<em>, \u201c<\/em><em>The only screen that matters is the screen that is in front of you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It really doesn\u2019t matter which one you\u2019re using for your news, information, entertainment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-32705\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-2.jpg?resize=370%2C457\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-2.jpg?resize=370%2C457 370w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-2-242x300.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>\u00a0If you\u2019re pushing TVs you say that nothing is better or more versatile than an interconnected TV&#8211;especially one that\u2019s 3D and after CES (Consumer Electronics Show) will have a 4K screen (super, super HD).<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no 4K content on the horizon, but what the heck!<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to move a lot of iPads, you say there\u2019s nothing more versatile for enjoying anywhere than a new iPad \u2013 better yet, a new iPad + iPad Mini. Of course, when\/if iTV arrives, you\u2019ll modify your pitch.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re Motorola or Nokia, you say your smartphone is clearly the best.<\/p>\n<p>If you sell all of the options, it just doesn\u2019t matter \u2026 <strong><em>just buy \u2018em!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since what seems like the beginning of time, there was always a TV set in the home. Everyone gathered around it, ate their microwave dinners and watched whatever was on.<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t really a profitable business for the manufacturers, but there\u2019s great volume and is becoming a flickering bright light for the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) that runs CES.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pushing Screens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To keep the factories humming, the \u201cbrands\u201d made a convincing case for more screens \u2013 family room, bedroom, media room, out by the pool, kitchen \u2013 the more, the merrier.<\/p>\n<p>Then, suddenly people began streaming, downloading video, rather than watching whatever the networks, stations, cable folks decided they should watch.<\/p>\n<p>Folks could leave the TV and watch stuff anywhere, everywhere with their phone, tablet, laptop.<\/p>\n<p>The television &#8212; the very foundation of the home &#8212; is becoming just another screen.<\/p>\n<p>Oscar looked concerned and said, <em>\u201cMaybe he&#8217;s just bluffing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To keep up, set makers are pushing Web-connected televisions loaded with apps (Netflix, Vudu, Hulu, etc).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32706\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-3.jpg?resize=436%2C372\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-3.jpg?resize=436%2C372 436w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-3-300x255.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>The industry tried (and is still trying) 3D, but that hasn\u2019t been very successful because you\u2019re still tied to \u201ctheir\u201d content; and OMG, there\u2019s so much more available!<\/p>\n<p>According to NPD and Nielsen, even with all of the viewing options, the TV set is still the family video viewing solution of choice.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32707\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=434%2C387\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=434%2C387 434w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-4-300x267.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>NPD said that 45 percent of the web video watched is on the TV set, taking over the #1 spot from the PC. Not that the TV set is necessarily connected to the iNet like the manufacturers envisioned, but there are more options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>43 percent connected TVs<\/li>\n<li>47 percent VG consoles (Wii,\u00a0Xbox 360, PS3)<\/li>\n<li>62 percent streaming media\u00a0players (Roku, Boxee, Apple TV)<\/li>\n<li>38 percent computers with\u00a0direct wired connection to TV<\/li>\n<li>21 percent of BD players<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Pushing Content<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The switch to web TV has physical cable and networks a little concerned because it means people like Yahoo!, Google, Amazon, Apple and others around the globe could have greater entertainment\/news impact and influence.<\/p>\n<p>And how difficult could it be for them to have their supply chain knock out a few gazillion very large screen monitors?<\/p>\n<p>Oscar was right on when he said, <em>\u201cTell me when it hurts.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After all, it\u2019s just another screen.<\/p>\n<p>And while you \u201cknow\u201d the reason you have your computer, iPad, iPhone is for all of the important social networking stuff you have to do, Pew found that watching video clearly outranks everything else you do online.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Video Watching Outranks Other Online Activities<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32708\" style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32708\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32708\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=502%2C405\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=502%2C405 502w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-5-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32708\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 Pew Internet &amp; American Life Project Survey<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We recognize that there are a lot of very smart people out there saying we\u2019re seeing the end of the PC world, but we disagree \u2026 emphatically.<\/p>\n<p>We do work \u2013 real work \u2013 on our computers (desktop and laptop). TV, our son recently proclaimed that entertainment has finally released to the anywhere, anytime, any device stuff the industry has been touting for years.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32711\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=456%2C188\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=456%2C188 456w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-8-300x123.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Even though it has only been available for a little while, he \u2013 and others who sorta\u2019 count \u2013 say that 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century entertainment is really here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Content Pipes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And that has to concern the content control pipe owners.<\/p>\n<p>Screens are increasingly becoming more connected. Not just to the Internet, but to one another.<\/p>\n<p>As Twist\u2019s Joel noted, the screens are becoming smart pieces of glass and plastic that connect us to our content, and people are increasingly going to watch their screen their way.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Joel, however, we don\u2019t see the PC disappearing from the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>There are reasons we have the array of devices we own and use:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Smartphone? Check<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 iPad?
