At some level, everyone agrees we have to address resource management and our environmental concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Our home has pockets of working technology &#8212; home wireless network, programmable thermostat, smart electricity meter, programmable yard watering, wireless audio\/video everywhere and a security system.<\/p>\n<p>Each does its job but they certainly don\u2019t talk to each other, work together like the \u201cit\u2019s gonna\u2019 be so good\u201d vision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Obstacles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s holding the smart home back?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The rich are getting richer and the idea of saving such small amounts isn\u2019t of much interest except as a cocktail party talking point.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The \u201cmiddle class\u201d and poor are scrambling to survive and put something away for tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Profit \u2013 companies want their system silos to retain market share while the customers (utilities, manufacturers and service providers) want end-to-end control.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Economic weakness, economic uncertainty \u2013 around the globe, millions of homes are under water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lack of building code and product standards; lack of oversight\/regulation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Resistance from entrenched technologies; lack of tested, mature new technologies<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not hopeless though.<\/p>\n<p>Today, you can hardly buy a laptop\/ultrabook, tablet\/iPad, smartphone\/iPhone without a webcam.<\/p>\n<p>As people slowly replace appliances, they\u2019ll probably have to buy a smart-system product and figure out how to connect to the rest of their smart system(s).<\/p>\n<p>What kind of smart home do we want?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32914\" style=\"width: 318px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-32.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32914\" class=\" wp-image-32914\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=308%2C170\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=308%2C170 308w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-32-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32914\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Source \u2013 Corning Glass<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Images in Glass <em>\u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>The key to a successful smart home is having the user interface available to you when you want it, where you want it, how you want it.\u00a0 If you\u2019re trying to imagine the possibilities, visit Corning\u2019s website.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Fingertip Control<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check out Corning\u2019s \u201cA Day of Glass\u201d on YouTube and you\u2019ll want to kick your house\u2019s foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The technology is used, not seen.<\/p>\n<p>Control is there when you want it, when you need it.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t even think about it \u2026 gawd, it\u2019s freakin\u2019 fantastic!<\/p>\n<p>Windex folks can\u2019t wait!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32915\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-42.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32915\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32915\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=265%2C197\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Source \u2013 homeautomationbasics<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong>It\u2019s the Apps \u2013 <\/strong><em>Almost everyone who is developing a home automation solution today is also including an application for tablets and smartphones.\u00a0 Manufacturers and service providers all have apps that serve the user and the company.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To help us get there from here to there, Corning also makes their Gorilla and bendable glass which is being used in wall control units, tablets, smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>And everyone is producing their app to control their systems, their products. And no, they don\u2019t work together or share information.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s a start and the user interface is pivotal to smart home acceptance and success, so it\u2019s a start.<\/p>\n<p>Our kid had to operate the old VCR for us and if you think we\u2019re going to want a thermostat that\u2019s smarter than we are \u2026 <strong><em>think again!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>LG, Samsung and others have been trying to convince us to buy smart appliances for years. And according to ABI Research, delivery of groceries to Korean homes is already over 20 percent penetration so their Internet-equipped refrigerators that auto order make sense at some level.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the delivery person would have to have access to the house to put the stuff away and we\u2019ll need better AI (artificial intelligence) to determine what is needed (what went bad) and what was delivered; but those little issues can be worked out.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s holding back the Home of the future? All of us!<\/p>\n<p>Sure, we all know we have to manage our resources better, and intelligent homes will be a giant leap forward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Support is Vital<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But remember, we couldn\u2019t \u201cmanage\u201d the VCR and a smart home has to be easy for real people (not geeks) to manage; and the systems, infrastructure have to be bulletproof. But companies, service providers, government\/legislation entities have to look beyond their self-interest and work together on all of the issues, all the needs, all of the opportunities for all users.<\/p>\n<p>The smart home, smart car, and smart phone all share the same thing for control fabric\u2014the Internet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Initiative Leader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maybe it will take something like Gary Shapiro\u2019s CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) to launch a global enlightened self-interest initiative to move companies, providers and governments to leverage the power of the Internet and help folks change their behavior.<\/p>\n<p>After all, retrofitting an existing base of homes that are out there is a huge undertaking; and if they can move everyone in the same direction, it could be profitable for all of their members.<\/p>\n<p>And it would probably help us all.<\/p>\n<p>But we still don\u2019t like the idea of our car and our home being smarter than we are, even if they do make our lives and environment better for tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>The Home of the Future, the totally connected home, can\/will become a model of efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Technology isn\u2019t holding us back.
