It\u2019s just a parent thing:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 81% of parents of online teens say they are concerned about how much information advertisers can learn about their child\u2019s online behavior, with some 46% being very concerned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 72% of parents of online teens are concerned about how their child interacts online with people they do not know, with some 53% of parents being very concerned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 69% of parents of online teens are concerned about how their child manages his or her reputation online, with some 49% being very concerned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 59% of the parents of teen users of social networking sites (SNS) have talked with their child because they were concerned about something posted to their profile or account. (That translates to 46% of parents of all online teens.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 50% of parents of online teens (not just the teens who use SNS) have used parental controls or other means of blocking, filtering or monitoring their child\u2019s online activities \u2026 a number that has remained almost unchanged since last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 42% of parents of online teens have searched for their child\u2019s name online to see what information is available about him or her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 align=\"center\">Parent Privacy Concerns about Online Teens<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_33033\" style=\"width: 388px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33033\" class=\" wp-image-33033\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-23.jpg?resize=378%2C223\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-23.jpg?resize=378%2C223 378w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-23-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-33033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 Pew Internet &amp; American Life Project<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Dumb and Dangerous \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>It\u2019s real easy for adults to do dumb things on the Web; but for youngsters, it\u2019s even easier because they\u2019ve never known anything but the always-on world.\u00a0\u00a0 And if parents can be tricked by devious people on the web, it\u2019s probably easy for nasty folks to entice, entrap kids.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Pew study also found that a lot of parents have become more social media savvy because that\u2019s where the kids spend a lot of their time:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 66% of all parents who have a child between the ages of 12-17, say they use a social networking site, up from 58% in 2011.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is great variation according to the parent\u2019s age; 82% of parents under age 40 say they use SNS, while only 61% of parents over age 40 use the sites.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t see anything really wrong with parental tracking and maybe, just maybe, tracking and trying to properly interact with consumers is okay; but it\u2019s too easy to step over the line today.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers are concerned about the disintegration of privacy and most seem to agree that their personal information and behavior are pretty transparent; but there isn\u2019t the same level of transparency from companies.<\/p>\n<p>As Deputy Marshall Gerard said, <em>\u201cLet that be a lesson to you, boys and girls. Don&#8217;t ever argue with the big dog, because the big dog is always right.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But the privacy concern will take a backseat when there are advantages to the consumer in sharing that information, according to a recent McCann Truth Central survey.<\/p>\n<h3 align=\"center\"><strong>Benefits to Sharing Personal Information with a Company\/Brand<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_33034\" style=\"width: 373px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-33.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33034\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33034\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-33.jpg?resize=363%2C214\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-33.jpg?resize=363%2C214 363w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-33-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-33034\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source - McCann Truth Central<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><strong><em>Sure, I\u2019ll Share \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>Folks around the globe are more than willing to share their personal information as long as there\u2019s something in it for them.\u00a0 The more the benefits, the more information they\u2019ll share.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In fact, seven out of 10 of the people asked said they were willing to share their personal information when it meant they had access to promotions and discounts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Convenience over Privacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0 the financial consideration was strong \u2013 the wife loves to tell us how much she saved us \u2013 the study also found that they would share personal information if it meant it made their shopping, buying more convenient.<\/p>\n<p>The combination was a key to the wife signing up for a program at our grocery store and at Lowe\u2019s where they \u201cvolunteered\u201d to keep track of our purchases in a database so they could give us new buying and upgrade hints for the home.<\/p>\n<p>Guess that makes us part of the 37 percent who indicated they\u2019d provide the information to reduce the hassle of trying to find old purchase receipts.<\/p>\n<p>O.K., what this really means is that all of that Big Data that is being accumulated with every click is difficult to use properly and too tempting for businesses and governments to use improperly.<\/p>\n<p>Developing an accurate picture of consumer behavior is complex and the biggest challenge companies face today because the data accumulated is so overwhelming and so diverse.<\/p>\n<p>Early last year, Capgemini surveyed companies and not unsurprisingly, two-thirds said they were data driven (not customer driven).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, they all knew there were rich customer data mines to be tapped; but according to a McKinsey study, they just couldn\u2019t figure out how to do it.<\/p>\n<h3 align=\"center\"><strong>Areas Where Companies Should Focus on Using<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 align=\"center\"><strong>\u201cBig Data\u201d and Analytics to Improve Performance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_33035\" style=\"width: 380px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-43.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33035\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33035\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-43.jpg?resize=370%2C215\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-43.jpg?resize=370%2C215 370w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Untitled-43-300x174.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-33035\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 McKinsey &amp; Co<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\u00a0<strong><em>Big Data, Big Answers \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>All of the information search engine and social media sites capture from people\u2019s searching, roaming and sharing produces a better and better picture of the individual and his\/her wants, needs and thoughts.\u00a0 The challenge in capturing all of this rich Big Data is being able to quickly, easily and effectively analyze and use the right data to attract just the right customers.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s not that the companies aren\u2019t collecting the data because according to IDC, they can\u2019t build out data storage facilities fast enough. Figuring out how to analyze and use all of that information is still a work in progress.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t feel sorry for the poor, overwhelmed marketing folks though because there\u2019s always an old crutch they can use \u2026 advertising. Granted, its nothing like the <strong><em>Mad Men<\/em><\/strong> advertising where you\u2019d buy ad space based on some demographics and then \u201cspray and pray.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Automated Ad Placement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nope, the systems the ad placement folks use are more sophisticated.<\/p>\n<p>Now you can specify you want a soccer fan that makes $250k a year, a mother in Chicago who\u2019s looking for a new convertible and <strong><em>BAM!!<\/em><\/strong>, they instantly get an ad tailored to them on their computer, tablet, smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>Or, as Poole profiled them, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Somebody that makes more money than you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No one has to buy the marketing person a martini; it just happens in milliseconds again and again around the country, around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>And because such rich data is continually accumulated, the ad targeting just gets better, more refined and the value of reaching just the right individual becomes more valuable.<\/p>\n<p>Does it make you feel more important?<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t let it go to your head; and fer gawd sake, don\u2019t Tweet your Followers because they may become valuable targets just by association. Actually, that couldn\u2019t be further from the truth because powerful algorithms are sizing you up based on a wide range of criteria &#8212; what you search, sites you visit, ads you click, social media profile and more.<\/p>\n<p>In the blink of an eye, you\u2019re shown an ad that was auctioned off to the highest bidder.<\/p>\n<p>So right now, you\u2019re probably feel a little used\/abused;
