They may not operate efficiently (or at times even effectively), but corporate executives and individuals can feel they\u2019re doing their part in protecting the environment by storing in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How much Big Data are we talking about?<\/p>\n<p>Really Big<\/p>\n<p>IDC projects that by 2020, we\u2019ll exceed 40 zettabytes or 5,200 GB of data for everyone on the planet &#8211; including the baby that was just born. Sometimes it\u2019s just difficult to impossible to clear your mind of good things going bad.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><\/em><br \/>\nToday, two activities are driving Big Data capture\/storage \u2013 national security and marketing.<\/p>\n<p>Trust us \u2026 none of this information accumulation is being done to benefit you or me.<\/p>\n<p>Both efforts are being carried out to satisfy\/serve a few.<\/p>\n<p>As an anonymous researcher said, \u201cMoney will drive access to large data sets and the power needed to analyze and act on the results of the analysis. The data analytics arena is becoming increasingly sophisticated in the information they capture and use and marketers will find better\/faster ways to refine and use the data.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We don\u2019t see this as a misuse of the Big Data and analysis because let\u2019s face it, sales and profits do keep the global economy running.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Short Supply<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the pool of talented, qualified quants is in desperately short supply, it certainly won\u2019t stop people from adding the title to their resume.<\/p>\n<p>That obviously concerns mathematicians, but not those of us who squeaked through our math courses in college.<\/p>\n<p>What bothers most experts in the field is that Big Data will primarily be used to feed folks ads based on their behavior and friends. In addition it can be used to analyze risk potential for health and other forms of insurance.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, it can compartmentalize people and expose them to fewer and fewer things.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, proper use of Big Data means some tough issues matters must be addressed, such as:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; public- and private-sector entities sharing data<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; providing frequently updated meta-data<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; openness and transparency<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; cost recovery<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; technical standards<\/p>\n<p>And there are bigger issues that need to be addressed such as security and data protection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secure, Private<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Keeping the data secure that they acquire from companies and government agencies isn\u2019t a big concern among researchers and forecasters because these IT people think they are already overly protective about the data they have and data they \u201cacquire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The portion of data that needs protection is growing faster than Big Data itself.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33690\" style=\"width: 491px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/2012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33690\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33690\" title=\"2012\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/2012.jpg?resize=481%2C322\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/2012.jpg?resize=481%2C322 481w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/2012-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-33690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 IIDC\u2019s Digital Universe Study, sponsored by EMC<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><em>Naked to the World \u2013 As the volume of data collected grows. So will the need to secure and protect personal and private information. Data in emerging countries will grow very rapidly and be most at risk to exploitation.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Less than half of the information that should be protected actually is.<\/p>\n<p>IDC analysts are cautiously optimistic that this may improve, but it still means unprotected data will grow by a factor of 26.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of ecommerce site standards; openness (gullibility) of consumers; phishers\u2019 increasing sophistication; and aggressive actions by hackers, whackers, cybercriminals puts tons of private data at risk.<\/p>\n<p>True standardization among retail, financial, business Web sites on what personal data can\/must be saved, collected and protected needs to be developed \u2013 and enforced \u2013 nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Still, every individual has to assume responsibility, control and concern over his\/her personal\/private data.<\/p>\n<p>Boomers, Gen Yers, Gen Xers and Gen Cers each have a different idea about what is personal and private.
