Previously we had issues with reaching speeds over 4.8GHz with our <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=29402\">Core i7-3770K<\/a> using our <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=14237&amp;all=1\">Noctua NH-DH14 CPU cooler<\/a> and we barely achieved 4.9GHz with our Thermaltake Water2.0 Pro. Now that we are testing faster and faster graphics including <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28910\">the GTX 690<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=33836\">the GeForce Titan<\/a>,\u00a0we&#8217;d like to increase the speed of our CPU for benching and this is our adventure in overclocking it further. They are also adapted for 1156 and 775 platforms and Intel&#8217;s latest extreme 6-core CPUs as well as AMD socket AM2, AM2+ and AM3\/AM3+ platforms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As important as saving money on hardware is, this editor believes that the choice of a CPU cooler is critical to any PC build. The cooler should never be cheap or retail. Too much depends on it if you value keeping your CPU cool, or especially if you plan to overclock. It is highly recommended that you instead look for sales and use rebates to save money.<\/p>\n<p>This review is not just about \u201cvalue\u201d. If you want to cool a Phenom II X4 or even an X6, a value CPU cooler such as a <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?tag=hyper-n212\">Coolermaster Hyper N 212+<\/a> will suffice. Even Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs such as Core i5 and Core i7 run relatively cool until you begin to push the core speeds up to 4.5GHz or so. Unless you are supplying a relatively high voltage to most CPUs, a budget cooler will work nicely. Even stock heatsinks are evolving to keep up with the hotter running quad-, hex-core and octo-core CPUs.<\/p>\n<p>Intel\u2019s newest Ivy Bridge Core i7 CPUs mark a new and exciting advance in processing power, but they definitely require a higher quality heatsink than for an older Core2Duo or Core2Quad CPUs, or for overclocking our older AMD Phenom II 980 BE X4, especially if you want to cool them without excessive fan noise. Our review sample of the Intel Core i7-3770K requires excellent cooling once you approach 4.4-4.6GHz as its stock clock is only 3.5GHz and 3.7GHz with Turbo on.<\/p>\n<p>The FX series of AMD CPUs almost require watercooling or a high-end air cooler and a very beefy power supply unit (PSU) if you are really serious about <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=28491\">a Bulldozer overclock in excess of 4.4GHz as we were<\/a>.\u00a0 AMD also uses Asetek-built liquid coolers for their FX series just as Thermaltake has done with its Water2.0 series.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/WC-1.jpg?resize=384%2C252\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/> Heat is drawn away from the CPU by the watercooler&#8217;s heatsink and is transferred by a liquid that is pumped through flexible tubes up into the array of hi-grade aluminum fins for dissipation in a radiator. Two large 120mm fans spin &#8211; one on each side of the radiator work together in a \u201cpush-pull\u201d configuration &#8211; blowing cooling air through the radiator to cool the CPU-heated liquid which is cycled for as long as the PC is on.<\/p>\n<p>We notice that many of the current compact all-in-one CPU watercoolers are based on or are similar to the Asetek-built unit (above)\u00a0and it is quite refreshing to see a custom design such as the one that Cooler Master chose for their Seidon 240M.\u00a0 The only issue one might have is with its lenght &#8211; it needs a large mid-tower or a full tower case to install the longer radiator.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Installed-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-33980\" title=\"Installed-1\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Installed-11.jpg?resize=300%2C240\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Installed-11.jpg?resize=300%2C240 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Installed-11.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the main question we want to answer, is the Seidon 240M able to beat the air-cooling of our current Noctua flagship cooler which allows us to clock our Core i7-3770K confortably to 4.8GHz or the Thermaltake Water2.0 Pro which allowed us to bench at 4.9GHz? What about 5.0GHz? We feel that after spending a month with\u00a0the Seidon 240M water\u00a0cooler, we can give you some answers regarding air-cooling vs. watercooling, especially regarding convenience, safety, and ease of installation.<\/p>\n<p>Before we compare the\u00a0Seidon 240M\u00a0watercoolers to the Thermaltake Water2.0 Pro and to the flagship Noctua air-cooler, let&#8217;s unbox, install, and test\u00a0it using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocbase.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.ocbase.com\/', 'OCCT 4.1 ']);\" >OCCT 4.1 <\/a>as an extreme test to load all the cores of our CPU to 100%. This thermal torture test produces far more extreme temperatures than you will ever find in gaming and it is a great test of thermal stability.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Introduction--><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: The Specifications, Unboxing &amp; Installation--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Specifications, Unboxing and Installation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Seidon 240M arrived in a cardboard box packed with everything necessary to cool any modern CPU that you may buy. This cooler\u00a0is \u201cuniversal\u201d \u2013 engineered to fit any modern Intel or AMD CPU\u2019s cooling needs \u2013 overclocked or stock. A good location at the back of the case uses\u00a0a\u00a0smaller 120mm\u00a0radiator to replace the exhaust fan, but this is not possible with the Seidon 240M.\u00a0Instead, we chose the top of our Overseer RX-I&#8217;s case which has both space and mounting holes for it.\u00a0\u00a0 Another choice would be to hang the radiator outside of the case.<a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/top.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-34014\" title=\"top\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/top.jpg?resize=480%2C266\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/top.jpg?resize=480%2C266 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/top-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In our case, cool air is drawn in from the front of the Overseer RX-I and also in through its side case panel opening (although optional, we installed a 240mm fan), and the hot radiator-heated air is exhausted from the top of the case by the Seidon&#8217;s two 120mm fans &#8211; in total, we have\u00a0two large intake fans and three smaller exhaust fans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was not practical for us to bring air directly in from the top of the case as Cooler Master advises.\u00a0 Our case is designed to exhaust air from the top as there are no dust filters on top to protect if the airflow is reversed and it becomes intake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If the end user reverses the fans to draw fresh air in from the top of the case, make sure to use a dust filter and also make sure that the case that you use can handle this kind of airflow. The only disadvantage with our choice\u00a0of using the two Seidon fans as exhaust\u00a0is that cooling might be compromised just a tiny bit compared with bringing cooling air directly into the radiator on top of the case instead of coming in through the front and side of the case.<a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Installed-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-34005\" title=\"Installed-2\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Installed-2.jpg?resize=480%2C341\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Installed-2.jpg?resize=480%2C341 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Installed-2-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Installing the Seidon 240M was a breeze and we much prefered its sturdy backplate and mounting system over the Thermaltake Water2.0 design which used plastic that deformed with multiple mountings.\u00a0 In contrast with using a bulky air cooler such as the Noctua NH-DH14, there is\u00a0now plenty of\u00a0room to access the connectors at the top of the motherboard; the Noctua cooler barely clears the video card and you have to remove a fan (and your video card) to insert DDR3 into a slot. Watercooling absolutely wins as far as roominess and convenience goes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Noise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Cooler Master\u00a0fans do a fine job of keeping the radiator and the liquid cool at regular rpm using power management. However, when the cooler is under load the fans spin up and you can hear them. In contrast, the Noctua NH-DH14 is quieter even under full load although the Seidon 240M is quieter than the Thermaltake Water2.0 coolers.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Seidon 240M wins for convenience although the\u00a0air cooler wins in the quietness department. The Water2.0 Performer was unable to reach 5.0GHz as it started to get rather warm at 4.8GHz when .1325V was added.\u00a0 The Seidon 240M hangs in with the very best of the water coolers that we have tested.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/idletemps.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34009\" title=\"idletemps\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/idletemps.jpg?resize=482%2C595\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/idletemps.jpg?resize=482%2C595 482w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/idletemps-243x300.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For our load test, we ran OCCT for at least ten minutes and recorded the highest peak\u00a0temperature reported by a single core at maximum load. From 3.5GHz to 4.2GHz we used no additional voltage and then added +.025V with each +100MHz of core clockspeed increase until we reached +.1325V at 4.8GHz, +.1375V at 4.9GHz and +.1425V at 5.0GHz!<\/p>\n<p>One thing we noted\u00a0that was different, with the other coolers at 4.5GHz we needed\u00a0to add +.025 volt for CPU stability\u00a0using the other 3 coolers, but we did not have to add\u00a0any extra voltage\u00a0using the Seidon 240M.\u00a0 At 4.9GHz, we got by with 1.350V with Seidon instead of the 1.375V needed for the other coolers. Everything else remained the same including the big jump in voltage to 1.425V needed to stabilize 5.0GHz.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that 5.0GHz for our i7-3770K\u00a0is not practically or safetly attainable with our level of cooling with any cooler that we have used under OCCT&#8217;s thermal torture test although the Seidon 240M actually maintained a lower average temperature &#8211; and never throttled &#8211; despite showing slightly higher peaks in some cases.\u00a0 We would hit a peak and an instant later the fans would rev up to maximum to bring the temperatures down.<\/p>\n<p>For 5.0GHz, we needed 1.425V to achieve stability and the temperatures quickly rose to 105C.\u00a0 We encountered Intel&#8217;s thermal throttling with the other 3 coolers, although the Seidon 240M\u00a0also\u00a0reached 105C at peak it did not throttle. The\u00a0Seidon 240M was able to keep our CPU cool longer than with the Noctua NH-DH14 or the Water2.0 coolers, but 4.9GHz was all we felt that we\u00a0could more safetly achieve needing +.1350V, while the Water2.0 and Noctua coolers needed +1375V.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about four fans in Push-Pull?\u00a0 Seidon 480M?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately we didn&#8217;t have 4 Cooler Master PWM controlled fans so we used 12omm\u00a0Noctua PWM\u00a0fans instead.\u00a0 They were as simple to intall as with any other 12omm fan with the bolts passing through them to screw into the radiator directly and securely.\u00a0 We were amazed that one CPU fan header on our EVGA Z77 FTW motherboard was able to effectively power and power manage\u00a0all\u00a0four fans through a series of Y-adaptors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/4x4-working.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-34012\" title=\"4x4-working\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/4x4-working.jpg?resize=480%2C350\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/4x4-working.jpg?resize=480%2C350 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/4x4-working-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this case, it is very important to have outstanding case airflow.\u00a0 The big 240mm\u00a0side case intake\u00a0fan and the large 200mm front intake fan are just enough to keep up with the 4x120mm exhaust\u00a0fans now on the Seidon\u00a0&#8220;480M&#8221;\u00a0and also with\u00a0the 140mm exhaust fan on the back.\u00a0 The airflow is so strong\u00a0exiting the\u00a0top of the case that\u00a0it will blow off a sheet of paper in an instant.\u00a0 And even with the extra two fans, the Seidon watercooler still fits easily above the CPU and watercooling contact head.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/side-fan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-34013\" title=\"side-fan\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/side-fan.jpg?resize=480%2C550\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/side-fan.jpg?resize=480%2C550 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/side-fan-261x300.jpg 261w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So was it worth it?\u00a0 Yes!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/5ghz-104c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-34011\" title=\"5ghz-104c\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/5ghz-104c.jpg?resize=480%2C412\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/5ghz-104c.jpg?resize=480%2C412 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/5ghz-104c-300x257.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0For the very first time, we were able to run OCCT indefinitely at 5.0GHz without tripping the Intel\u00a0thermal overload or hitting our\u00a0own self-imposed 105C limit\u00a0in OCCT.\u00a0 This is something that we could not achieve with any other CPU cooler that we have tested so far.\u00a0 Unfortunately, we could not lower the core voltage below 1.425V, so we will settle on 4.9GHz and 1.375V for extreme benchmarking when necessary.\u00a0 This is +100MHz higher than with our former extreme CPU overclock for extreme benching with the Water2.0 Pro.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s head for our conclusion<\/p>\n<h2><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Conclusion--><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to cooling your overclocked hot Intel or AMD CPU efficiently and quietly, Cooler Master is a great company to turn to. Just as we previously saw aftermarket aircoolers quietly eclipse the stock cooler and the Noctua NH-DH14 silently pass the budget coolers, we see the Seidon 240M surpass our Noctua&#8217;s maximum cooling ability.<\/p>\n<p>From our testing, the Seidon 240M\u00a0matches\u00a0or surpasses the Thermaltake Water 2.0 in its cooling ability even though the Thermaltake cooler has slightly cooler peak temperatures.\u00a0 Perhaps the Cooler Master Seidon 240M\u00a0is a little bit slower to repond to sudden spikes in temperature as one can\u00a0observe the temperature spike and an instant later the pump and the fans go to maximum rpm. However, the average temperature over time is slightly cooler than Thermaltakes&#8217;s Water2.0 Pro and we were able to keep our CPU under OCCT&#8217;s maximum load\u00a0even though we eventually called off the tests when they reached 105C. However, we would never consider 5.0GHz as\u00a0a reasonable overclock our particular i7-3770K even for benchmarking considering that it takes 1.425V to stabilize our CPU; whereas at only -100MHz lower &#8211; at 4.9GHz &#8211; we only need 1.350V for stability.<\/p>\n<p>We only noted a degree or two cooler using four fans in push-pull, but it was enough to run OCCT at 5.0GHz, something we could not achieve with any other CPU cooler that we have tested, so far.\u00a0 The noise from four fans was tolerable &#8211; considering the overclock.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a Core i7 or FX CPU that you really want to push to its maximum overclock, the\u00a0Seidon 240M is a good choice if your case has the room.\u00a0\u00a0The Seidon 240M is also reasonably quiet at all but the most extreme rpm.\u00a0 It comes highly recommended by this reviewer!<\/p>\n<h2>Cooler Master Seidon<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Pros: <\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0Seidon 240M is a great watercooling solution for overclocking almost any modern Intel or AMD CPU\u00a0to its limits and it beats our best air cooler, the flagship Noctua NH-DH14 in cooling performance and matches or surpasses the Thermaltake Water2.0 Pro.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Seidon 240M\u00a0is a complete self-contained compact liquid system that never needs refilling<\/li>\n<li>Everything is included for installation including a tube of\u00a0thermal compound useful for more than one installation.<\/li>\n<li>It is relatively easy to install into a full tower and it takes up much less space than a bulky air cooler<\/li>\n<li>Parts are well marked and the instructions are clear and well written although an included\u00a0DVD\u00a0might be a good idea for watercooling novice builders.<\/li>\n<li>Warranty is two years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Cons:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The fan noise is noticeable under maximum load and you can hear the pump although it is quieter than its competitors that we tested.<\/li>\n<li>Size.\u00a0 It will not easily\u00a0fit inside smaller cases.\u00a0 Measure your case first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>The Verdict<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Cooler Master&#8217;s Seidon 240M\u00a0<\/strong>is an excellent no-compromise all-in-one quiet cooler for a reasonable price considering its build, ease of installation, and all-inclusive package. It is well-deserving of our \u201cEditor\u2019s Choice\u201d award and it cools our own overclocked hot-running Ivy Bridge i7-3770K.
