Zeros<\/strong> \u2013 <em>Even with their overly optimistic projections on the volume of content people around the globe will produce, we\u2019re continually amazing them.\u00a0 Last year, they boldly said we\u2019d produce 30ZB of contentby 2020 and <strong>BAM!!!<\/strong> they had to increase the volume to 40ZB this year.\u00a0 While a lot of it only streams by and disappears, big storage buckets are still urgently needed by users, IT departments and cloud services.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fortunately, a lot of that stuff will be transient \u2013 streaming music\/video \u2013 and will never be stored.<\/p>\n<p>Frank looked at the data flow and commented, <em>\u201cI&#8217;m here to keep you alive, not help you shop.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a good thing because even if all of the storage suppliers \u2013 HD, flash, tape, optical \u2013 deliver on Gartner\u2019s and IDC\u2019s optimistic projections, suppliers barely keep up with demand \u2026 all of it.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, that assumes we consumers get ours first!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34057\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34057\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34057\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=580%2C360\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-4.jpg?resize=580%2C360 580w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-4-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34057\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 KPCB (Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp; Byers)<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Consumer Demand<\/strong><em> \u2013 Desktop\/ultrabook PCs have taken a breather in sales, but the category is far from dead as some claim.\u00a0 For the younger crowd, tablet and smartphone usage (and replacement purchases) will be a higher priority because of their convenience, battery life, instant connective capabilities.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Heck, we don\u2019t want much \u2026 32GB on our smartphone, 64GB on our iPad, 4800GB OWC SSD in our ultrabook, 1TB OnTheGo portable drive, two 4TB NewerTech home clouds.<\/p>\n<p>Who gets the rest?<\/p>\n<p><strong>IT Data Struggle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Haggard IT people and cloud sellers (formerly called outsourced storage).<\/p>\n<p>They like, need that storage because they not only store their stuff but they also store all that really rich, really informative big data.<\/p>\n<p>According to IDC, that big data isn\u2019t just the average 1.8M GB of information you create annually, but also that 4.1M GB of data.<\/p>\n<p>It probably doesn\u2019t include all of your YouTube videos, photos, social postings and yes, that machine to machine data about you and everything.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, everyone wants to study that information \u2026 you know&#8211;companies, retailers, hackers, whackers and cyber bad people.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34058\" style=\"width: 571px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34058\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34058\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=561%2C353\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=561%2C353 561w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-5-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34058\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 IDC<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Mixed Cloud<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 Organizations and individuals are shoving about almost everything they can into the cloud storage solutions, even though they aren\u2019t exactly certain what the parameters, safeguards and availability are.\u00a0 The only people who have a good handle on the situation are the people who are out to disrupt activities or borrow information.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But most of it just sits there untagged, unanalyzed, unused because each department has its own silo of readily valuable data, and they don\u2019t share.<\/p>\n<p>Even though everyone has their own silo of your information, you don\u2019t have to worry because most don\u2019t have the tools or talent to handle all the heavy work. Maybe not.<\/p>\n<p>Have you checked many (SLAs) service level agreements lately?<\/p>\n<p>Or, as Rachel stated, <em>\u201cFarmer, this is the part you *do* get paid for!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>What Content?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re a big company that has material stored in someone\u2019s cloud that you really want to save for legal\/business purposes, it could disappear.<\/p>\n<p>What if you have valuable, historical content you\u2019ve asked them to archive? You know, keep it until you need it?<\/p>\n<p>After the first year, about 80 percent of the content that is stored \u2013 even video content and movies \u2013is seldom accessed.<\/p>\n<p>It just makes you feel warm and fuzzy to know the information is there \u2026 just in case.<\/p>\n<p>So?<\/p>\n<p>It may not be something you think much about unless you pay the data center bills.<\/p>\n<p>Forget the hardware cost, building cost, staff cost.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34060\" style=\"width: 533px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34060\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34060\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=523%2C292\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=523%2C292 523w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-7-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34060\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 New York Times<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Storage Farms<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 Cloud storage sounds great and is in increasing demand.\u00a0 To meet the needs, enterprises around the globe are building massive cloud data centers to store all the stuff.\u00a0 The challenge\/issue is that they require huge volumes of power to be instantly available, which is having a huge impact on our environment.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Data centers, by design, run at maximum capacity around the clock and consume huge volumes of energy to power and cool the systems and storage farm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Power Surge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to a <em>New York Times<\/em> investigation, digital warehouses worldwide use about 30 billion watts of electricity, roughly equivalent to the output of 30 nuclear power plants.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. data centers account for one-quarter to one-third of that load.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, some folks are working on that \u201clittle\u201d problem.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook (obviously, a huge server\/storage energy user) and the OPC (Open Compute Project) are working on the server issues. Through crowdsourcing, they\u2019ve made some great progress in setting efficiency standards for scalable servers, storage and data center hardware.<\/p>\n<p>Guess if anyone has a vested interest in lowering the cost of serving their one billion plus users, its Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge is to get scalable servers that work on a restricted electrical\/HVAC diet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Data Priorities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, cloud storage farms and IT organizations are taking a new look at the age of content and volume\/frequency of accesses.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34061\" style=\"width: 354px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34061\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34061\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=344%2C332\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=344%2C332 344w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-8-300x289.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 Panasonic<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>80 Percent Rule<\/strong> \u2013 Industry analysts estimate that as much as 80 percent of the content presently being stored is really for archive purposes \u2013 legal, financial, historical, background data and content, which is kept just in case it is needed or for future monetization. Access to this information generally drops off to almost zero after a year even though it is retained for 10-50 years. The key goal for most enterprises is to ensure the data will be available, if ever needed, at the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) possible.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Most organizations use racks of hard drives out of habit \u2013 energy usage has improved. Tape is more power conservative but has other costly side effects like constant monitoring and regular migration.<\/p>\n<p>New optical-based power-down archive solutions provide safe, reliable, long-term content storage without all environmental damage.\u00a0 They don\u2019t require A\/C or power except when accessed and they don\u2019t require replacement or migration every five to seven years.<\/p>\n<p>We do, however, have to understand that not all data is created equal and there are trade-offs in availability and environmental impact:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Some data is mission-critical and absolutely has to be available the moment you look at the screen<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Some data is needed, but users can wait for it for 10-30 seconds<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Some infrequently used data can be available in 1-2 minutes<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Data such as patient records, legal records can be requested and served up in a day<\/p>\n<p>You may feel that your data\/content is the most important stuff out there, but the rest of us aren\u2019t sure that\u2019s a cost we want to pass on to our kids.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34062\" style=\"width: 363px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34062\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34062\" title=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=353%2C202\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-9.jpg?resize=353%2C202 353w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Untitled-9-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source - The Bodyguard, Warner Bros.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lying on the parched ground, Frank explained the issue, <em>\u201cAw, Christ, I told you why!
