Gdrive had \u201cissues\u201d and if the work doesn\u2019t fit into Google\u2019s agenda, you\u2019re left hanging.<\/p>\n<p>No problem because we don\u2019t store anything in the cloud \u2013 either of them \u2013 we\u2019re not willing to have them corrupted, lost or \u201cborrowed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We take the same approach with our family\u2019s stuff because things happen.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, we all use the cloud \u2013 the kids more than the wife and I because they\u2019ve never known life without it. We have.<\/p>\n<p>The cloud is hot, sexy and, according to all the soothsayers, you can store anything safely and access it from anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Solley was pretty sure she could get her content when she said<em>, \u201cI think I&#8217;ll go to Vancouver now.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of course, there is the fine print; and that\u2019s what can kill your stuff in the cloud.<strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34313\" style=\"width: 340px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/stom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34313\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34313\" title=\"stom\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/stom.jpg?resize=330%2C248\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/stom.jpg?resize=330%2C248 330w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/stom-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34313\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 Flickr<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Storms Overhead \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>Your home may be your island for rejuvenation but it is also exposed to disasters that lurk in The Cloud. It is an even bigger problem when you store all of your best, most valuable, impossible to replace family documents, information, images and videos there. When The Cloud darkens and hactivists\/cyber-criminals find your content\u2019s location \u2026 disaster can strike.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Gartner looked at the SLAs (service level agreements) for most of the business cloud services and to say they found them lacking would be putting it mildly.<\/p>\n<p>And companies are paying for those services, so imagine what that means if you\u2019re using 2-5GB of free storage \u2026 not overly promising.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beyond Loss<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But their losing content (or our not being able to find our stuff up there) is only one of the reasons we shy away from the soft, fluffy cloud storage facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy Wallace recognized the issue when he exclaimed, <em>\u201cHey, there&#8217;s a fog bank out there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chart-clous-servives-concer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34314\" title=\"chart-clous-servives-concer\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chart-clous-servives-concer.jpg?resize=428%2C366\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chart-clous-servives-concer.jpg?resize=428%2C366 428w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/chart-clous-servives-concer-300x256.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>List of Issues \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>Security continues to be the biggest concern business and individual users have with \u201ctaking advantage\u201d of cloud services. Of course, there\u2019s also the fact that like a cloud, it isn\u2019t really understood.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There\u2019s also the little fact that if your 10-100GB of family treasures are located in one of those petabyte cloud warehouses and bad people want to harvest information, where\u2019s the first place they\u2019re going to go \u2026 right, the bank, not your mattress.<\/p>\n<p>O.K., in our case it\u2019s not the mattress, it\u2019s a 4TB mirrored home network storage unit plus a second 4TB nearline HD we use for stuff we seldom access but would need to the minute we deleted it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34315\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Dig-content-per-house.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34315\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34315\" title=\"Dig-content-per-house\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Dig-content-per-house.jpg?resize=550%2C210\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Dig-content-per-house.jpg?resize=550%2C210 550w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Dig-content-per-house-300x114.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 Coughlin Associates<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Rapid Climb \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>Digital content \u2013 music and video \u2013 has grown rapidly in the family\u2019s home library, especially with game systems able to stream content and allow people to play it on virtually every device they own. Families also have general backups as well as personal backups that can and must be protected.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong, there are a lot of good things about cloud storage and especially for backup.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud storage\/backup does make it convenient because you can access the information with any Internet-connected device; information can be shared (as with our Content Insider); they say it has built-in security and it\u2019s pretty easy to manage, search, retrieve and transfer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Disasters Are Real<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The other reason lots of cloud storage sellers like to use (and it\u2019s valid) is if a disaster strikes your home you know your stuff is somewhere safe and you can rebuild your home.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are the questionable aspects, like you\u2019re never really certain you can get the content back if they go out of business or \u201cmisplace\u201d your family gems.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and if some government agency does a wide sweep of your storage service saying to fork it over \u2026 they\u2019ll do it, trust me.<\/p>\n<p>Dan O\u2019Bannon found out when he said, <em>\u201cIt should be right outside my front door now.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget those Wild West SLAs that have so many ifs, ands, buts that translate into <em>\u201ctough bounce dude\/dudette.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why we use the cloud as a passing, perishable storage option.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also that foggy thing in the cloud called security.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bad Guys\/Gals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>David Talbot, who wrote <strong><em>Security in the Ether,<\/em><\/strong> points out concerns security and cloud experts have about how vulnerable it really is for information in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>He summed up the issues by writing, <em>\u201cNot only could stored data be stolen by hackers or lost to breakdowns, but a cloud provider might mishandle data \u2014 or be forced to give it up in response to a subpoena.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So we\u2019ll stick with our home cloud.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34316\" style=\"width: 465px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/devices-connnected.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34316\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34316\" title=\"devices-connnected\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/devices-connnected.jpg?resize=455%2C433\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/devices-connnected.jpg?resize=455%2C433 455w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/devices-connnected-300x285.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 ABI Research<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Easy Networking \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>It has become easier and easier for people to connect all of their devices to their home network, usually over Wi-Fi. While the home network was developed for computers, today it has become the home\/family entertainment source.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sure, the law can come knocking on our home network door; but all they\u2019re going to find is a whole bunch of devices connected to a home cloud that\u2019s just got family stuff \u2026 sorry we just don\u2019t have any of that DRM (digital rights management) content.<\/p>\n<p>Nope. O.K., it isn\u2019t vocal; but the family does exchange news, information, ideas. Sometimes that\u2019s enough.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We know you don\u2019t do this, but she and I have been known to text\/email each other even when we\u2019re in the same room!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Still Have Issues<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But with our mobile devices always close at hand (if not in use), we still have \u201cstorage issues\/paranoia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To handle the data explosion and avoid the universal cloud, we have \u201cseveral\u201d personal clouds.<\/p>\n<p>You probably call them old-fashioned external HDs, but a personal cloud just sounds sexier.<\/p>\n<p>The kids love their little OWC on-the-go Pros because they not only look cool, they hold 500GB of stuff and fit easily in their pocket\/backpack with all of mobile devices.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34319\" style=\"width: 298px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/personal-cloud.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34319\" class=\" wp-image-34319\" title=\"personal-cloud\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/personal-cloud.jpg?resize=288%2C154\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34319\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Source \u2013 macsales<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Personal Cloud \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>It may not be the fluffy thing that comes to mind when someone says they use their personal cloud but portable storage devices like the On-The-Go Pro can have enough capacity, be rugged enough, be small enough and be safe enough to protect all of your personal information, images, videos, songs from prying eyes.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I still carry around an old LaCie 256GB rugged portable drive that I got years ago.\u00a0 I\u2019m secretly waiting for it to start to die so I can move up from USB 2.0 to one with 3.0 and as much capacity as the kids have.<\/p>\n<p>Well, I may have to wait until the wife gets her personal cloud \u2026 we\u2019ll see.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there\u2019s also the little fact that the kids have been telling us how storage deprived they feel when all of their friends have 1TB portables; so maybe dad will have to wait \u2026 again<\/p>\n<p>The one thing I know is that as much as we love SSD in our mobile devices \u2013 super fast, pretty darn rugged, great battery life, super light; they just aren\u2019t going to replace the HDs we have around the house and on our person.<\/p>\n<p>And when necessary, or in a pinch, there\u2019s always the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s still something we approach with caution because\u2026<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34312\" style=\"width: 443px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Last.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34312\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34312\" title=\"Last\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Last.jpg?resize=433%2C290\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Last.jpg?resize=433%2C290 433w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Last-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34312\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source - \u201cThe Fog,\u201d AVCO Embassy Pictures<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>As Stevie Wayne warned, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>To the ships at sea who can hear my voice, look across the water, into the darkness.
