The encounter with a CM Storm product in our CM Storm 400 Ceres Review left an impression of a commitment to design and value. Since then, they have released several new additions to the line including the CM Storm Trigger Mechanical Keyboard.

The CM Storm Trigger Mechanical Keyboard is one of the most feature-packed keyboards we have seen. The keyboard has gold-plated Cherry MX Blue switches rated for over 50 million strokes, red LED back lighting, a full speed USB 2.0 hub, anti-ghosting 6 key roll over, gold plated cables and more.

Our Trigger features Cherry MX Blue switches. Cherry MX Blue switches are a low resistance, force feedback (click) switch.

CM storm also offers Cherry Black, Brown, and Red MX switches with Trigger. The different colors signify different types of feedback (linear/force), actuation force (PC recognition of a key press), and if keys have audible click feedback or are silent.

Pressure required to actuate ranges from 45g to 60g throughout the different colors. Our Cherry MX Blue switches require 50g of actuation force. This means our key presses will require 50g of pressure in order for MX Blue switches to register a key press.

With Cherry MX Blue switches actuation is also audible with a click and the key springs back to a “ready” position. The LED backlighting and rubber-like material also means the keys are easy to feel for and see at night.

CM Storm Trigger is available for $84.99(Amazon) if this sounds like your kind of keyboard.

Let’s take a look at all the features and specs of Trigger.

Features

High durability gold-plated Cherry switches rated for over 50 million key strokes

Multi-media control keys for convenient sound control

5 macro keys with profile management

18K gold plated ultra low latency USB plugs

Anti-ghosting 6 key rollover

64KB on-board memory for profile storage

Storm tactics key for deactivation of Windows key

1000Hz driverless polling / 1ms response time

Two port enhanced USB 2.0 hub

Detachable wrist rest

Braided cable for durability

Non-slip rubber coating

Specifications

Model SGK-6000-GKCC1(Black)

SGK-6000-GKCL1(Blue)

SGK-6000-GKCM1(Brown)

SGK-6000-GKCR1(Red)

Key Switch CHERRY: Black / Blue/ Brown/ Red

N-Key Rollover: 6

Macro Key: 5

Polling Rate: 1000Hz / 1ms

Backlighting: All keys

Output: 2 x USB hub

Windows Key Disable: Yes

Onboard Memory: 64KB

Media Keys: Yes

Wrist Rest Detachable

Dimensions475(L) x 162(W) x 25(H) mm

18.7(L) x 6.5 (W) x 0.98(H) inch

Weight 1260 g / 2.78 lb

The CM Storm Trigger Mechanical Keyboard

Trigger’s packaging continues with the CM Storm line’s red and black color styling. The most interesting part of the packaging is the featured five programmable macro keys, dual USB 2.0 hub, and 64KB macro and keyboard profile memory. Opening the packaging was stress free with simple stickers to cut.

Trigger is unveiled below.

Trigger is a sleek mix of black and silver with a rubber-like coating for the black on the keyboard. The material lends grip to Trigger and doesn’t feel cheap or too rough.

Trigger also comes with a detachable wrist rest in the same material described above. This easily snaps on and off the keyboard itself. The wrist rest material is heavier than the keyboard and allows your hand to stay in place instead of sliding around.

The wrist rest adds some bulk to Trigger so some may not like it. We enjoyed the gripping surface and it was comfortable to have.

The whole keyboard together takes up quite a bit of space at 18.7(L) x 6.5(W) x 0.98(H). It is very comfortable and ergonomic, even with heavy use.

Actuation is audible and tactile with the Cherry MX Blue switches. Trigger’s keys are easy to feel for and see in any setting.

CM Storm Trigger features three different modes of illumination. The three modes cycle the keyboard backlighting to the entire board or a gaming cluster (WSAD, four arrow keys, and 5 macro keys) and the final mode is a “breathing mode” in which the keys cycle through levels of brightness constantly.

Trigger has three levels of brightness available to cycle through without a DC 5V connection. CM Storm Trigger did not include a 5V cable so you would need to buy one if you want the two increased brightness levels with the 5V connection on the top left of the keyboard.

We do not have a DC 5V cable so we could not see the two extra levels of brightness but the three we experienced were as bright as we needed.

A possible future upgrade to the software would be to allow the user to create custom lighting modes. Most games use more than the standard WSAD/arrows cluster for gaming. The ability to create a mode that lights up all the keys your game would use and no others would be a fantastic option.

The keys of Trigger are fully programmable with an included program on a packaged disk that allows you to customize any key. However, if you are a Windows 8 user, your experience revolves around switching to the “metro” layout using the “Windows” key. Unfortunately, Trigger has the CM Storm logo where the Windows Key should be and they are not programmed by default to use the Windows key function.

The CD includes the program to fix this by programming a function to the keys you want but this is still an unnecessary nuisance.

We recommend simply installing the software first before using Trigger in Windows 8. Mapping the CM Storm logo to the “Windows Key” option is easy once the program is installed.

The keyboard itself is incredibly accurate and responsive. Trigger allows the gamer a choice of MX switches – Red, Black, Brown, Blue. Our Cherry MX Blue switches performed flawlessly.

During gaming our hands always remain comfortable, even through several hours of play. Gaming with Trigger was precise with anti-ghosting 6 key rollover and 1000Hz driverless polling/1ms response time means you can press 6 keys at once and Trigger will respond perfectly.

Cherry MX Blue switches are great, but there’s just one caveat: a key press is reminiscent of typewriter noise levels.

Because Cherry Blue MX switches have different characteristics from other MX switches, CM Storm Trigger leaves the choice up to you and you can pick a quieter experience.

The most common keyboards feature dome/rubber membrane switches that give little noise when pressed. These profiles can be held with the keyboard RAM or PC RAM. This depends on how complex your profiles become and whether or not Trigger or your PC should be responsible for handling your profiles or your PC.

The software also allows you to create profile switching actions. For example, a Skyrim launch can make Trigger automatically switch to a gaming profile that you set on PC ram.

This means Trigger can instantly switch to a “writing” profile after our Skyrim session is complete and Microsoft Word is launched.

This makes using Trigger for any function effortless. Trigger has an added benefit of featuring five macro keys on the left side.

These are extra keys, along with the rest, that are fully customizable in our favorite part of the program: Macro Studio.

Macro Studio (shown above) allows your memory to save any type of mouse and key combination you want.
