It keeps getting bigger and bigger.\u201d<\/em> <strong>\u2013 Steve\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Andrews, <em>The Blob<\/em>, Fairview Productions, 1958 <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Most who watch big sporting events like Soccer\u2019s World Cup, the Olympics or March Madness are only concerned about who is going to win.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are the rest of us who wonder how many petabytes of video, Facebook comments, legal\/illegal YouTube mashups and tweets they\u2019re adding to Big Data.<\/p>\n<p>Today, folks are streaming more content from a whole lot of sources to many different devices \u2026 because we can!<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s spawning some new projections on how we view our content. You know, pay-TV folks are on their last leg, OTT (over-the-top) people are taking over, tablets are replacing TV sets and smartphones\/phablets are doing \u2018em all in.<\/p>\n<p>With all of these new sources, the market analysts are reporting that TV sales are flat.<\/p>\n<p>Kate, the nurse, was so afraid she screamed, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Doctor, nothing will stop it!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The only reason you have a TV is so you can run home at night to catch up on the action you saved with your DVR (digital video recorder).<\/p>\n<p>Most of the speakers at OTTCON (Over-The-Top TV Conference) were pointing out that what we really want are more choices than the ones the cable and satellite guys are giving us.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s sorta\u2019 true, which is why we like our little Roku dongle (yeah, they\u2019ll have an app for that) and the reason people are so excited about Samsung\u2019s Evolution Kit, which makes yesterday\u2019s sets smart.<\/p>\n<p>OTTCON speakers cited the report that said cable folks had lost 1.66 million customers last year but didn\u2019t bother telling you that the telcos and satellite folks picked up the same number, so \u2026<\/p>\n<p>As Lieutenant Dave said, <em>\u201cIt&#8217;s the most horrible thing I&#8217;ve ever seen in my life.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The truth is there are 100 million pay-TV households in the U.S., so people are just moving back and forth.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34628\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-21.jpg?resize=395%2C360\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-21.jpg?resize=395%2C360 395w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-21-300x273.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Funnels \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>People use a wide range of options to watch their online content, and most of the time it doesn\u2019t involve cutting the cord \u2013 yet. The challenge for PayTV folks is to attract\/entice the age groups that were born connected to the Internet where everything was available, everything was free.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are a growing number of cord-cutters (viewers who cancel their cable, satellite or telco video service), especially outside the U.S. We simply aren\u2019t adding households, so they\u2019re dealing with a finite market, a market that is getting older.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34629\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-31.jpg?resize=432%2C232\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-31.jpg?resize=432%2C232 432w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-31-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Cutting The Cord \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>Dispensing with cable or satellite paid service bundles is more prevalent in the Asia-Pacific and Europe than in the U.S. Of course, they also have faster, better and less expensive Internet service, which helps.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The entertainment world has changed \u2013 dramatically \u2013 since everyone huddled around the little black and white screen with their TV dinner to watch <strong><em>The Lone Ranger, The Sid Ceasar Show, Ed Sullivan.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, kids (and the rest of us) have choices.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve never known life without the Internet and a world overflowing with content and on-the-go viewing options.<\/p>\n<p>As Sgt. Jim Bert said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Your story&#8217;s gotten bigger now, kid.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34630\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-41.jpg?resize=573%2C301\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-41.jpg?resize=573%2C301 573w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-41-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Screen of Choice \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>Even though the living room and TV set are the first choice for their entertainment (about 50 percent of the respondents), people are increasingly wanting to enjoy their content on their device \u2013 TV, computer, tablet, phablet, smartphone. Repurposing and having content available is a lot of work. <strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You have to admit that tapping online content is really neat because there\u2019s so much good stuff (along with some really bad\/dumb stuff) out there.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34631\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-51.jpg?resize=386%2C474\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-51.jpg?resize=386%2C474 386w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-51-244x300.jpg 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Online Viewing \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>Once you stray from the pre-packaged content provided by the pay-as-you-go entertainment industry, the options available to consumers are seemingly endless. The challenge is finding the content you want without a lot of effort. Right now, that means using specific apps for specific content sources.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, our kids have to point us to it because there\u2019s just too much and its spread all around the globe in every nook and cranny.<\/p>\n<p>To give you an idea of just how popular online content has become, YouTube reported they now have more than one billion visitors every month to watch the constantly uploaded, cute cat videos.<\/p>\n<p>One billion visitors a month is equivalent to about ten Super Bowl audiences or the third largest country behind China and India.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s not just the new shows, new events and news.<\/p>\n<p>Do a little nosing around the iNet and you can find some fantastic treasures and obscure videos that will really interest you.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34632\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-61.jpg?resize=500%2C277\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-61.jpg?resize=500%2C277 500w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-61-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>It\u2019s Out There \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>One of the best things about the Internet content repositories is that with a little work you can find stuff that\u2019s extremely interesting to you even if it doesn\u2019t have mass audience appeal. The challenge for the suppliers is monetizing it and making it somewhat profitable.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When you stumble on the stuff but don\u2019t have time \u2013 right now \u2013 to watch it you can store it on your device for later.<\/p>\n<p>But wait.<\/p>\n<p>Motorola recently stated in their worldwide media engagement report that nearly 40 percent of the content we store is never watched. It just sits there in the dark waiting for someone \u2013 anyone \u2013 to show it a little love and attention.<\/p>\n<p>No, you\u2019re not contributing to some landfill; but you are making IDC\u2019s storage projection of 40 zettabytes by 2020 look darn good.<\/p>\n<p>As Steve pleaded, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Dave, you gotta see this thing to believe what I&#8217;m telling you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The way we\u2019re going, it\u2019s probably a low number and I can\u2019t even remember how big a zettabyte is \u2026 but it\u2019s big!<\/p>\n<p>Globally, folks do seem to watch a lot of TV&#8211;on their sets and on their other devices (tablets and smartphones):<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Worldwide, we average 25 hours of video content a week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The living room is still the focal point (it\u2019s a nice place to be with the kids) but we\u2019re also mutiscreening with laptops, tablets and smartphones.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34633\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=539%2C529\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=539%2C529 539w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-71-300x294.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 539px) 100vw, 539px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Social TV \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>A lot of experts are telling us that we\u2019ve entered the period of social TV where we not only watch a show but we actively interact\u00a0 with it. That\u2019s true to an extent, but that is still in its infancy. It turns out people like to do other things while resting their brains.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The great thing about smart TVs and the iNet is we can use our devices for all of the things we want to do while being entertained.<\/p>\n<p>Well, there are a couple problems along the way right now.<\/p>\n<p>Finding the content you want online is still a challenge. Sure you can sign up for NetFlix, or buy Samsung\u2019s solution or use Fredio\u2019s online solution or scrounge around YouTube and hope you stumble on it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Everyone<\/em><\/strong> has an app for that \u2026 <em>their<\/em> app!<\/p>\n<p>Henry Martin saw what was going on and said, <em>\u201cI&#8217;m going to get to the bottom of this at once.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What we really want is the ability to find content quickly and then automatically load it on the set\/device we have with us at the time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34634\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-81.jpg?resize=628%2C180\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-81.jpg?resize=628%2C180 628w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-81-300x85.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>It\u2019s a Right \u2013 <\/em><\/strong><em>Well, perhaps getting the content you want, when you want it, how you want it and where you want it isn\u2019t a right but it is what people increasingly expect. We no longer want to be tied to\/limited to one device for news, information, entertainment.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It isn\u2019t so much that people want to shove it to the cable, telephone or satellite companies, it\u2019s just that folks want content and they want it when, where and how they want it.<\/p>\n<p>As Deloitte put it \u2026 we\u2019re digital omnivores!<\/p>\n<p>We have all of these media-capable devices and OMG, we want to use them \u2013 smart TV, gaming console, iNet dongles, laptop computers, tablets, smartphones. And folks keep creating and shoving more stuff for us to consume.<\/p>\n<p>Frustrated, Lieutenant Dave said, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Come on, Steve, make sense.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In addition to TV shows\/movies, we have games and breathtaking series (have you seen Warner Bros. Mortal Kombat?).
