They have a great group of Melbourne-based Aussies who made terrific production\/post production boards and they\u2019ve slowly expanded their footprint in the market; but boy, this year they came with a whole lot of thunder!<\/p>\n<p><em>Last year, it was their Cinema Camera which the industry liked but Red always seemed to have the wow factor. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This year, they made us take notice with two new cameras: the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 4K and the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Blackmagic Production Camera 4K, is a high-resolution 4K digital film camera with a large Super 35-size sensor with a professional global shutter and all kinds of neat stuff that videographers really love.\u00a0 And with cameras normally in the $25K range, it caught a lot of attention with its $4K price.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34969\" alt=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-24.jpg?resize=392%2C277\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-24.jpg?resize=392%2C277 392w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-24-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Little Big Jewel \u2013 <\/i><\/b><i>Blackmagic\u2019s new compact digital cinema camera had all of the shooting features and capabilities professional videographers would want in a shoot-anywhere camera. \u00a0And the fact that you could pop the little beauty in your pocket for about one grand is going to appeal to a lot of the indies and YouTube folks.\u00a0 <b><\/b><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But Blackmagic\u2019s real surprise was the Pocket Cinema Camera that fits in your pocket, offers full-sized cinema quality and has a ridiculous sub-$1K price that is cheaper than a really good DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera.<\/p>\n<p>Blackmagic\u2019s CEO, Grant Petty, positioned the new little gem that will allow pros to shoot in places where they\u2019ve never been able to use a quality camera before. At that price, it\u2019s almost a disposable camera, but we think it\u2019s gonna\u2019 be <i>the camera <\/i>that indies will go with and who knows how many YouTube videographers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34970\" alt=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-34.jpg?resize=336%2C256\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-34.jpg?resize=336%2C256 336w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-34-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Red Eyecatcher \u2013 <\/i><\/b><i>Red always seems to have a way to drag you into their NAB booth and a cleanroom set-up. This year, showing you how they upgrade their 4K sensors to 6K right before your eyes certainly did the trick.\u00a0 It\u2019s nice to see they\u2019re thinking about how the pros can extend the life of their shooting investment since most of the cameras at NAB aren\u2019t cheap. <b><\/b><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We\u2019ve always been in awe of Red because they just looked like awesome cameras and people.<\/p>\n<p>This year, they drew even more attention to their booth with a cleanroom set-up in their booth to show how they upgraded their Dragon boosting 4K to 6K. 6x is your regular HD viewing, which means you can shoot at 6144 x 3160 pixels and up to 100 frames-per-second.<\/p>\n<p>They had people pressing their noses to the windows (including the competition) to watch the work-in-progress \u2026 cool, interesting.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, there were other cameras shown from all the usual suspects \u2013 Sony, Panasonic, etc. \u2013 but if you really wanted to be at the bleeding edge, Japan\u2019s NHK (always on the bleeding edge) showed off 8K (yeah, 8X is better than your HD stuff) \u00a0video with 22.2 channel audio.<\/p>\n<p>Their new super-high video single-chip camera has a 120Hz image sensor which lets them do really high-def filming of fast-moving objects.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah, they demonstrated the mind-boggling video on a 300-in screen.<\/p>\n<p>To show Hollywood a little love, Intel announced the next-generation of their Thunderbolt interface that will double the throughput and expand their 4K support.\u00a0 Of course, I\u2019d like to see just one flavor of Thunderbolt so more storage folks would commit to it.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tighter Budgets<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It was easy to see that \u201cthe good ol days\u201d of broadcast ain\u2019t anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Only an idiot thinks it will return!<\/p>\n<p>Production people like Avid, Grass Valley, Harmonic, Quantel, Sony and all of the other big booths are a lot more humble today.<\/p>\n<p>Some have cut back so much their press galas disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Proverbial arm-and-a-leg production equipment has become a whole lot cheaper and many of them are now taking up the world\u2019s mantra of The Cloud.<\/p>\n<p>A number of folks touted their MAM (media asset management) in the cloud but that\u2019s the broadcasters\/content creator\u2019s assets floating around up there \u2026 somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a whole new game and these guys\/gals have to go on a diet and start exercising fast \u2026 or else!<\/p>\n<p>A good example was Wohler, known for its audio monitoring software. They bought Radiant Grid \u2013 file-based signal processing solutions \u2013 and have been getting into a lot of new business.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34971\" alt=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-44.jpg?resize=557%2C244\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-44.jpg?resize=557%2C244 557w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-44-300x131.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Production Meters \u2013 <\/i><\/b><i>Audio HW producer Wohler showed off its file-based signal processing solution at NAB.\u00a0 They recently acquired Radiant Grid to get the technology.\u00a0 With the shift in technology, there\u2019s a whole lot of downsizing and acquisition going on in the industry as folks struggle to survive.\u00a0 <\/i>Source &#8211; Wohler<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They\u2019ve moved into new areas, like a lot of the standards of the industry; but at the same time, they\u2019re shrinking.<\/p>\n<p>If they and the others don\u2019t, they\u2019ll be one of those neat little footnotes of the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of footnotes, Fox\/News Corp\u2019s Chase Carey got the short straw and said if things like Aereo and Hopper were deemed legal, networks would have to move to the pay-for-view model.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34972\" alt=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-53.jpg?resize=320%2C245\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-53.jpg?resize=320%2C245 320w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-53-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Drawing the Line &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/i><\/b><i>News Corp\u2019s<b> <\/b><\/i><i>Chase Carey(r), makes no bones about the fact that the industry doesn\u2019t like the way the courts are treating the industry\u2019s property.\u00a0 NAB president\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gordon Smith was \u201ca little\u201d more diplomatic in talking about folks having to give up parts of their spectrum to the wireless people so we can watch more of their content on our mobile devices.\u00a0 <\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We\u2019re not talking chump change here because stations pay about $2.6B in retransmission fees, according to SNL Kagen; and that is projected to rise to hit $6B in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Both Aereo and Hopper got more publicity than they probably deserve because their customer bases aren\u2019t much better than TiVo \u2026 on a good day!<\/p>\n<p>But that was then, this is now and cord-cutting is in vogue.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is broadcasters are getting hit (hard) from all sides.<\/p>\n<p><b>Play Nice<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The FCC is already working to take away part of \u201ctheir\u201d broadcast spectrum and give it (O.K., sell it) to wireless companies like AT&amp;T and Verizon who then make it possible for Internet services like Aereo to send you \u201ctheir\u201d signals for zip, zero, nada.<\/p>\n<p>Carey and the network folks said if Congress doesn\u2019t act (done a great job on the budget) they\u2019d have to go paid.<\/p>\n<p>Even though they don\u2019t like each other very much, NAB president, Gordon Smith and Verizon\u2019s Lowell McAdam said they\u2019d work more closely together to deliver content to your mobile device and expand sending video over networks.<\/p>\n<p>It sucks to be stuck between a rock and a hard place.<\/p>\n<p>But content \u2013 RAW, post, distribution, archiving &#8211; still comes back to storage and for the dailies and post work.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, we\u2019re talking Ultra-HD stuff; so let\u2019s say you have 16,000 x 8,000 pixel resolution, 24 bits\/pixel, 300 fps RAW video.<\/p>\n<p>That requires 115GB\/s data rates (414TB\/h) and that could easily double.<\/p>\n<p>With 4K cameras (and above) you\u2019re talkin 1.66TB\/h of content.\u00a0 That\u2019s a lot to store and a whole lot to push through the Internet and airwaves!<\/p>\n<p>LaCie took advantage of Intel\u2019s Thunderbird announcement to show off its newest family of personal and workgroup storage units designed for media and heavy workload applications.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34973\" alt=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-63.jpg?resize=361%2C228\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-63.jpg?resize=361%2C228 361w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-63-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Personal, Team Storage \u2013 <\/i><\/b><i>With Intel taking the covers off yet another version of their higher- speed Thunderbolt interface, there was a lot more interest in personal and workteam storage solutions at NAB.\u00a0 <b><\/b><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Long a favorite of creative folks, they showed off a sleek family of hubs, really big and rugged drives that can deliver performance up to 800MB\/s which should be pretty good for even the most picky producer.<\/p>\n<p><b>Cloudy Clouds<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Most of the cloud storage people on the regular NAB floor waved their hands in the air and told anyone who would listen how they could store all of their stuff in their clouds and save a ton of money and headaches.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34974\" alt=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-73.jpg?resize=483%2C250\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-73.jpg?resize=483%2C250 483w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Untitled-73-300x155.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>Cloudy Solution \u2013 <\/i><\/b><i>Everyone seems to be offering a cloud work-in-progress and storage solution this year that will make it faster, easier for the pros (and consumers) to produce and distribute their content. \u00a0They talk about archiving the stuff in real cloudy terms when it comes to long- term reliability.\u00a0 <\/i>Source \u2013 Coughlin Assoc<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s about all the booth people really know.<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t have a good grasp on all of the HW\/SW pieces that are supposed to save, protect, and preserve all the really expensive creative work the NAB attendees make.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, there\u2019s a 2-day event called the Cloud Computing Conference (CCC) put on by DCIA (Distributed Computing Industry Association) that actually does a pretty good job of giving you a clue about cloud storage &#8211;
