You\u2019ve may have been so busy getting Likes for your page(s) and Twitter followers you didn\u2019t notice that management and marketing have been finding people to do your less fun job \u2026 researching and writing.<\/span><\/p>\n You know, the stuff that\u2019s too much like work.<\/span><\/p>\n According to the latest Optus Future of Business report, social media publicists might be overrating their company impact because Optus foun the base of consumers using social media to interact with organizations is very low \u2013 only 4 percent use it to connect with businesses.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n It goes by derogatory names like \u201cnative advertising\u201d or more kindly names like \u201csponsored content,\u201d but good article work is being done and it\u2019s growing.<\/span><\/p>\n There really are people out there to do the work because you aren\u2019t capable, up to the task or don\u2019t think it\u2019s as much fun!<\/span><\/p>\n The industry has made a lot of progress with what Michael Lewis termed the \u201cnew, new thing\u201d and progress is good.<\/span><\/p>\n Written Word<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n But along the way, we\u2019ve also lost or misplaced some things like reading, sending personal notes (even emails) and creating well-researched, well-written items.<\/span><\/p>\n We\u2019ve met marketing folks who say they write the releases for their publicists (which can mean a lot of things, including the fact that they don\u2019t think their publicists use enough superlatives or sales pitches).<\/span><\/p>\n Publicists like to say they are hired to protect, enhance and build their company\u2019s\/client\u2019s image through the media.<\/span><\/p>\n They lay claim to the idea that they can analyze the organization, find the positive messages and translate them into something a good journalist can\/will use.<\/span><\/p>\n Social media is predicted to rank lowly in terms of customers communicating with businesses because:<\/span><\/p>\n a)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>consumers see social media as a relatively private communication tool for peers <\/span><\/p>\n b)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>many companies are using social media as a straight marketing tool<\/span><\/p>\n And when bad things happen \u2013 and they do to the best companies\/products, they develop a sound response and minimize or eliminate the damage.<\/span><\/p>\n Building a Reserve<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n But astute management prefers to be pro-active and build up a reserve of goodwill with quality messages, quality articles.<\/span><\/p>\n And if publicists aren\u2019t up to the task, there is an army of very good to excellent journalists, reporters who can deliver the content.<\/span><\/p>\n Remember, their regular places of work have been severely hurt by online media outlets.<\/span><\/p>\n In fact, many publicists gloated that now they could bypass the media and go directly to their audience so good journalistic writers were dinosaurs.<\/span><\/p>\n Wrong \u2026 good writing is always in demand \u2013 interesting, fun to read.<\/span><\/p>\n Is it unethical for journalists to consider contract writing?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n They were being paid before and even today many moonlight doing pieces for companies.<\/span><\/p>\n No Puffery<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n Good sponsored content isn\u2019t a huge puff piece; it\u2019s a balanced educational\/informational article.<\/span><\/p>\n Is there a home for the pieces they write?<\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s the Web fer gawd sake.
