Nvidia’s rift with\u00a0Intel\u00a0is\u00a0now out\u00a0on the public battlefield and it is really\u00a0heating up.\u00a0 Despite recent denials by their CEO, Nvidia\u2019s latest shocking comments at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference in San Francisco<\/a> yesterday revealed that it has plans to enter the x86 processor market in the next two to three years!<\/p>\n

In a Q&A session at the conference, Nvidia\u2019s\u00a0 Michael Hara, senior vice president of investor relations and communications, was asked when Nvidia would want to get into the microprocessor business. \u00a0Hara said that \u201cthe question is not so much I think ‘if’; I think the question is ‘when’.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI think some time down the road it makes sense to take the same level of integration that we\u2019ve done with Tegra,\u201d said Hara. \u201cTegra is by any definition a complete computer on a chip, and the requirements of that market are such that you have to be very low power, very small, but highly efficient. And so in that particular state it made a lot of sense to take that approach, and someday it\u2019s going to make sense to take that same approach in the x86 market as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Listening further, Hara\u00a0 pointed out that Nvidia\u2019s x86 CPU would be mainly targeted at smaller system-on-chip platforms.\u00a0 He said, \u201cIf you look at the high-end of the PC market I think it\u2019s going to stay fairly discrete, because that seems to be the best of all worlds.\u201d\u00a0 Clearly Nvidia is aiming for the MID and netbook-notebook markets.<\/p>\n

Hara revealed that the combination of Intel’s Atom platform and Nvidia’s Ion\u00a0are good enough for now, but that\u00a0Nvidia might be looking at their own\u00a0CPU in two or three years.\u00a0 “There is no question it is on our mind”, he stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The big problem for Nvidia is that it doesn\u2019t have an x86 license from Intel to produce its own x86 CPUs.\u00a0Some of us\u00a0have long ago suggested that Nvidia was probably\u00a0considering\u00a0buying or allying\u00a0with VIA to purchase its SIS processor division, although these speculations\u00a0were later denied by VIA.<\/p>\n
