At\u00a0the $400 pricepoint, it is replacing the GTX 680.\u00a0 The GTX 770 uses the same GK104 GPU as the GTX 680 with a few new additions that enable higher performance. \u00a0The new additions to 700 series include the Titan&#8217;s and the GTX 780&#8217;s Boost 2.0 controls and a little more board power which enables higher clocks.\u00a0 The GTX 770 uses 7GHz GDDR5 memory as an upgrade over the GTX 680&#8217;s 6GHz memory because the 256-bit bus is narrow for such a highly-clocked GPU.\u00a0 Below is pictured the reference GTX 770 which uses an advanced blower-style cooling fan that is also shared by the Titan and the GTX 780.<a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/NVIDIA_GeForce_GTX_770-3qtr3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Nvidia GTX 770 2GB\" alt=\"Nvidia GTX 770 2GB\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/NVIDIA_GeForce_GTX_770-3qtr3.jpg?resize=480%2C346\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>We are going to focus on the EVGA GTX 770 SC&#8217;s performance and especially on overclocking it beyond its base clocks (1111\/7010MHz) which will go beyond the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/770\/5\/\">highest user Boost overclock to 1215MHz<\/a>\u00a0by nearly 100MHz (to over 1300MHz) that we got from our reference GTX 770 (1046MHz plus 90MHz core overclock).<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/SC-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-36979\" alt=\"EVGA GTX 770 SC 4GB\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/SC-1.jpg?resize=600%2C274\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/SC-1.jpg?resize=600%2C274 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/SC-1-300x136.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The EVGA GTX 770 Superclocked edition<\/h2>\n<p>There are going to be many varieties of the GTX 770 with their suggested base price starting at $399 which also include some factory overclocked SKUs. We are also going to compare with the reference GTX 770 2GB plus 10 other enthusiast-class cards to give the reader our &#8220;Big Picture.\u00a0 For this evaluation, we are benching with 30 modern games and 4 synthetic benchmarks at 1920&#215;1080 and 2560&#215;1600 resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>This particular evaluation is not designed to compare 4GB vRAM versus 2GB.\u00a0 Performance differences are rarely seen even at 2560&#215;1600, but rather at widescreen resolutions using 3 panels such as at 5760&#215;1080. \u00a0 Our comparison of 2GB versus 4GB vRAM will be published later on this month, after we evaluate GTX 770 SLI and Tri-SLI.<\/p>\n<p>For this evaluation, we will compare the performance of the EVGA GTX 770 SC with its main competitor, the AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. The card arrives in large EVGA box that advertises the card without its specifications on its outside other than it is &#8220;SC &#8211; Superclocked&#8221;. What is surprising is that we were able to overclock we. past our reference maximum base overclock of their GTX 770 SC at 1111\/7010MHz to 1176\/8210MHz.\u00a0 We regularly saw boost to 1306MHz although temperatures never quite reached 80C &#8211; even at maximum load.<a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/heaven-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37122\" alt=\"heaven-1\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/heaven-1.jpg?resize=720%2C446\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/heaven-1.jpg?resize=720%2C446 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/heaven-1-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were able to add an additional +65MHz over the EVGA base clock for a total offset of +135MHz over the 1046MHz base clock that Nvidia set for the reference GTX 770. On top of that, we were able to get +300MHz on the memory. Temperatures were never an issue and the fan profile remained at stock which meant that the GTX 770 SC is also extraordinarily quiet at maximum load &#8211; the fan profile rarely went to 60% and the temperatures remained well under 80C under the most stressful conditions and highest load in any game that we tested<em><\/em>. The EVGA GTX 770 SC and the reference GTX 770 are both very quiet cards but the ACX cooler is quieter, especially under load.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s head to the performance charts to see how the EVGA GTX 770 SC compares with the reference GTX 770 each at stock, Superclocked from EVGA&#8217;s factory and overclocked, as well as against the stock (925\/1375MHz) and GHz Edition (1050\/1500MHz) AMD HD 7970. It did extraordinarily well performance-wise comparing it to the HD 7970 GHz edition where it brings good performance value at $459. When we overclocked our EVGA GTX 770 SC past the reference GTX 770 clocks, we saw it narrow the performance gap with the $650 reference GTX 780. We are totally impressed with this cool-running enthusiast card which is nearly able to go head to head against the GTX 780 in a couple of games.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We see good overclockability with reasonable quietness at stock voltage and fan profile even when the GTX 770 SC is overclocked beyond EVGA&#8217;s factory overclock, and it scales well in performance. It is quieter than the reference GTX 770 or even Titan &#8211; possibly quieter especially under load!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For its $459 price, overclocked it gives good bang for buck compared to the performance of the reference GTX 780 which is priced at $650, and it mostly beats up on even a GHz edition of the HD 7970. From our results, we can expect The EVGA GTX 770 SC to be a bit faster than most factory overclocked HD 7970 GHz editions. And for only ten dollars more than the reference version, the EVGA GTX 770 SC 2GB offers better performance than the reference GTX 770s while giving the gamer EVGA&#8217;s excellent support and warranty as well as a great community.\u00a0 4GB over 2GB vRAM is well worth the $40 more for gaming at super-widescreen resolutions as we shall see in an upcoming evaluation.<\/p>\n<h2>Pros<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The EVGA GTX 770 SC provides excellent performance for a 4GB $459 card and it beats HD 7970 GHz Edition 2:1, winning twice as many games than it loses in our 30-game benchmark suite.<\/li>\n<li>Overclockability is decent beyond the factory overclock at stock voltage and fan profile; the card remains quiet and GPU Boost works as advertised.<\/li>\n<li>The cooling design is quiet and efficient; the card coupled with a well-ventilated case stay cool.<\/li>\n<li>Two or three of these cards can be used for SLI to increase performance far beyond a single card.\u00a0 Advanced frame metering provides a smooth delivery of visuals.<\/li>\n<li>3D Vision 2 and PhysX enhance gaming immersion and both are improved using the GTX 770 compared to the older GeForce series.<\/li>\n<li>3-panel Surround plus an accessory display can now be driven off of a single GTX 770 by requiring a single passive adapter; HD 7970 generally requires two.<\/li>\n<li>New AA allows for high performance without jaggies in deferred shading lighting engines; TXAA solves the shimmering and crawling when the camera is in motion<\/li>\n<li>Adaptive VSync reduces stuttering while retaining the advantages of minimizing tearing.<\/li>\n<li>The EVGA GTX 770 SC 2GB is a great value for ten dollars more after $10 mail-in-rebate than the reference version; 4GB is certainly worth a &#8220;future proofing&#8221; premium of forty dollars if you use high resolutions. You get at least a 3 year warranty backed by 24\/7 tech support and a great EVGA community.<\/li>\n<li>A<em> Splinter Cell: Blacklist<\/em> coupon is included for a free digital download.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Cons<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Aesthetics &#8211; especially compared with the reference version although some may prefer the look of the ACX cooler.\u00a0 Not really a con, however, one needs a well-ventilated case for this type of cooler.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Verdict:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are buying a &#8220;sweet spot&#8221; upper-range video card right now that is perfect for 1920&#215;1080 and 2560&#215;1600 as well as being good performance bang for buck in a $420-460 card, the EVGA GTX 770 SC 2GB is a great choice for ten dollars more than the reference design.\u00a0 Paying $40 more for 4GB of fast GDDR5 might be very useful for very high resolutions and we shall test this in an upcoming article. With great features like PhysX and the second generation of 3D Vision, you can be assured of immersive gaming by picking this card for 1920&#215;1080 or higher resolution. If you currently game on an older generation video card such as a GTX 580 or older, you will do yourself a big favor by upgrading.<\/p>\n<p>The competition is hot and AMD offers their own set of features including Eyefinity 2.0 with the lower-priced HD 7970s and overclocked GHz editions.
