The regular R9 290X is priced starting at $549 including a version of the PowerColor 290X OC that does not include <em>BattleField 4<\/em>.\u00a0 Some vendors are including BF4 with their cards for $549 while others aren&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>The reference GTX 780 can be found for as little as $449 and it is currently sold with a three game Holiday bundle as well as with a $100 Shield discount. We have already found that the stock 290X is faster than the GTX 780, although the stock GTX 780 Ti at $649 slots above the mildly overclocked PowerColor 290X.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about overclocking?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We already found that our evaluation sample of the reference GTX 780 Ti overclocks well on stock fan profile and stock voltage so that it performs significantly faster than the mildly overclocked PowerColor R9 290X.\u00a0 Now we want to crank up the voltage, turn up each card&#8217;s fans to 100% and see how far each card will overclock and how the performance compares.<\/p>\n<p>For this evaluation, you will see us pit the overvolted and overclocked-to-the-max PowerColor R9 290X against the GTX 780 Ti, also at max clocks. We are also going to compare with the reference GTX 780, as well as with 6 other top cards to see how well the overclocked PowerColor 290X OC does. For this evaluation, we are benching 30 modern games and 4 synthetic benchmarks at 1920&#215;1080 and 2560&#215;1600 resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>Since we do not want any chance of our CPU bottlenecking our graphics, we are testing all of our graphics cards by using our Ivy Bridge Intel Core <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=30448\">i7-3770K<\/a> at 4.50GHz, 16 GB Kingston <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/kingston-beast\/\">&#8220;Beast&#8221; HyperX<\/a> DDR3 at 2133MHz, and an <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=31216\">EVGA Z77<\/a> FTW motherboard. The EVGA FTW motherboard features the 16x+16x PCIe 3.0 specification for CrossFire\/SLI. <img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Next page...\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif?w=720\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/> The Core i7-3770K at 4.5GHz is fast enough to differentiate even high-end video cards at high resolution and at high detail settings. <img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Next page...\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif?w=720\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before we look at our test bed and run benchmarks, let&#8217;s unbox our PowerColor R9 290X OC video card and look at its specifications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--pagetitle: Introduction--><!--nextpage--> <!--pagetitle: A closer look at the PowerColor R9 290X OC--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Next page...\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif?w=720\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The PowerColor R9 290X OC BF4 Edition<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All of the currently available R9 290X cards are reference versions.\u00a0 Vendor cooling solutions will probably not be available until the second week of December, about the same time that Nvidia&#8217;s partners will be releasing overclocked GTX 780 Tis.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, PowerColor&#8217;s main differentiation from other AMD partners is the company that stands behind it with a 2-year warranty, excellent customer service, and technical support should you need it. The PowerColor 290X itself is mildly overclocked and has excellent characteristics which may indicate that the GPU was binned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There is nothing fancy to see from the outside of the box. The card arrives in a PowerColor box that advertises the card without its specifications. because as you can see from the chart, cold benching in Quiet mode unfairly overstates performance close to Uber mode.<a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/warmVquiet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39716\" alt=\"warmVquiet\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/warmVquiet.jpg?resize=559%2C422\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/warmVquiet.jpg?resize=559%2C422 559w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/warmVquiet-150x113.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/warmVquiet-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>To get the highest performance from our PowerColor 290X manual overclock, we set the fan speed to 100% and we then look for the highest performance across our benchmark suite that does not throttle the GPU.\u00a0 We found that adding +150MHz to the core speed of the 290X kept our GPU mostly in the 1150MHz range with minimal throttling at 100% fan.\u00a0 We needed MSI&#8217;s latest beta 17 of Afterburner to add +.1mV to stabilize it completely and we also needed cool ambient temperatures of 72-75F to maintain our highest clocks.<a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/maxOC-afterBurner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-39720\" alt=\"maxOC-afterBurner\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/maxOC-afterBurner.jpg?resize=360%2C276\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/maxOC-afterBurner.jpg?resize=360%2C276 600w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/maxOC-afterBurner-150x115.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/maxOC-afterBurner-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Hawaii core was actually stable beyond our +150MHz offset to over 1160MHz, but 100% fan was not enough to keep the hot-running GPU from throttling and performance was generally less overall than with trying to maintain 1150MHz.\u00a0 We also managed +200MHz on the memory, to raise the clocks from 1250MHz to 1450MHz.\u00a0 We lost stability at 1500MHz and 1450MHz provided the best overall performance for the memory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Noise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Benching the R9 290X at 100% fan is irritating.\u00a0 It is very much like gaming with a nearby hairdryer running non-stop on high.\u00a0 No closed headphones will block it completely, and you can easily hear the card running in the next room even with a door shut.\u00a0 In contrast, the fan of the GTX 780 Ti at 100% is acceptable; it is about as loud as the 290X running at 60%.\u00a0 The GTX 780 Ti fan frequencies are much less irritating even at 100%, it is more a &#8220;whoosh&#8221; of air instead of the droning noise of the 290X.<\/p>\n<p>AMD has brought an amazing GPU to the market but crippled it with a inadequate cooler for even Uber speeds.\u00a0 Overclocking brings very difficult tradeoffs to the gamer for 290X the reference version.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see what cooling solutions AMD&#8217;s partners bring to the market next month, as a completely open design will probably overwhelm many cases unequipped to handle Hawaii&#8217;s extreme heat.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s head to the performance charts to see how the overclocked $579 PowerColor R9 290X OC compares with the overclocked $499 GTX 780 at stock, as well as against the overclocked $649 GTX 780 Ti. <!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Performance Summary Charts--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Performance summary charts &amp; graphs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Following are two summary charts of 30 modern PC games and 4 synthetic benches. The highest settings are generally chosen and it is DX11 when there is a choice; DX10 is picked above DX9, and the settings are generally ultra or maxed unless specified on the chart. Specific settings are listed on the charts. The benches are run at 1920&#215;1080 and 2560&#215;1600.<\/p>\n<p>The first column places the stock 1000\/1250MHz R9 290X in Uber mode next to the voltage-unlocked 1150MHz\/1450MHz results.\u00a0 The third column shows the performance of the stock GTX 780 Ti (1019MHz maximum Boost) compared with its overclocked results (+200MHz core\/+400MHz memory) which allowed for a maximum Boost of 1208MHz.<a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/OCvOC-cht.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39717\" alt=\"OCvOC-cht\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/OCvOC-cht.jpg?resize=639%2C1462\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/OCvOC-cht.jpg?resize=639%2C1462 639w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/OCvOC-cht-65x150.jpg 65w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/OCvOC-cht-131x300.jpg 131w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/OCvOC-cht-447x1024.jpg 447w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>We get typically good scaling with the GTX 780 Ti as there is no thermal throttling, especially with the fan running 100%.\u00a0 Some games do not scale well at 1920&#215;1080 as Core i7-3770K at 4.5GHz is not fast enough, so we need to mostly focus on 2560&#215;1600 results.\u00a0 On the other hand, we mostly see good scaling results for the R9 290X, but in some games there is very little increase from raising the clocks, and occasionally, we even see negative results.\u00a0 This is because even with the 290X fan maxed out at 100% in a cool room, it is not quite enough to keep the GPU below 94C, and throttling is evident.<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, the overclocked GTX 780 Ti sits above the overclocked R9 290X just as the reference versions do.\u00a0 It will take more than an 1150MHz Hawaii core clock to beat a modestly overclocked GTX 780 Ti.\u00a0 Here is our &#8220;Big Picture&#8221; and more GPUs are featured as well as different modes and in-between overclocks for the R9 290X and for the GTX 780 Ti, its main competitor.<a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BigPic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39718\" alt=\"BigPic\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BigPic.jpg?resize=720%2C693\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BigPic.jpg?resize=720%2C693 1519w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BigPic-150x144.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BigPic-300x288.jpg 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BigPic-1024x985.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1519px) 100vw, 1519px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>The charts give the rankings very clearly.\u00a0 The $579 PowerColor R9 290X OC goes head to head with the Titan, it generally beats the $499 GTX 780 and it loses to the $649 GTX 780 Ti.\u00a0 Maximum overclocking does not change the positioning, and the R9 290X maximum overclock is still throttled by a very loud 100% fan in a cool room.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s head to our conclusion.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: The Conclusion--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This has been quite an interesting exploration for us in evaluating the $579 PowerColor R9 290X OC versus the $499 GTX 780 and the $649 GTX 780 Ti.\u00a0 At Quiet and Uber reference and mildly overclocked 1030MHz speeds, the 290X did well performance-wise slotting above the reference GTX 780, but well below the GTX 780 Ti.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Comparing game bundles, the GeForce Holiday bundle including <a href=\"http:\/\/ctt.marketwire.com\/?release=1066244&amp;id=3628150&amp;type=1&amp;url=http%3a%2f%2fwww.geforce.com%2fgames-applications%2fpc-games%2fassassins-creed-4-black-flag%23source%3dpr\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/ctt.marketwire.com\/?release=1066244&amp;id=3628150&amp;type=1&amp;url=http%3a%2f%2fwww.geforce.com%2fgames-applications%2fpc-games%2fassassins-creed-4-black-flag%23source%3dpr', 'Assassin\u2019s Creed IV\u2013Black Flag']);\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em style=\"font-style: italic;\">Assassin\u2019s Creed IV\u2013Black Flag<\/em><\/a>, <em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Splinter Cell: Blacklist,<\/em> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ctt.marketwire.com\/?release=1066244&amp;id=3628156&amp;type=1&amp;url=http%3a%2f%2fwww.geforce.com%2fgames-applications%2fpc-games%2fbatman-arkham-origins%23source%3dpr\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/ctt.marketwire.com\/?release=1066244&amp;id=3628156&amp;type=1&amp;url=http%3a%2f%2fwww.geforce.com%2fgames-applications%2fpc-games%2fbatman-arkham-origins%23source%3dpr', 'Batman: Arkham Origins']);\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em style=\"font-style: italic;\">Batman: Arkham Origins<\/em><\/a> offered with the GTX 780\/Ti is a better deal for most gamers than paying $30 for an included copy of <em>Battlefield 4<\/em> in our opinion.\u00a0 AMD has confused the issue as only some editions of the 290X actually include the copy at $549, so the consumer has to be certain that they are even getting the BF4 bundle from the retailer when they buy it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We see good overclockability when the PowerColor R9 280X is overclocked beyond 1030MHz, and it scales well in performance. Unfortunately, the trade off for successfully overclocking the 290X is a lot of fan noise.\u00a0 For its $579 price, once overclocked, the PowerColor R9 290X gives good bang for buck compared to the performance of the GTX 780 Ti which is priced at $649. Unfortunately, they are a contrast &#8211; the GTX 780\/Ti is quiet at maximum overclock while the Uber R9 290X is loud, nevermind overclocked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The 4GB vRAM of the 290X over 4GB vRAM for the GTX 780\/Ti may be valuable for gaming at multiple screen 4K resolutions using multi-GPU 290X CrossFire although we expect noise would again be a significant issue with more than one of these reference cards in any case.<\/p>\n<h2>Pros<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The PowerColor R9 290X OC BF4 edition provides good performance for a 4GB $579 card and it easily beats the $1000 GTX Titan when it is user overclocked and does well against the GTX 780.<\/li>\n<li>4GB over 3GB of vRAM can be very useful in some 4K multiple display situations.<\/li>\n<li>Two or three of these cards in CrossFire (spacing the cards a slot apart) can be used together to increase performance far beyond a single card.<\/li>\n<li>3-panel Eyefinity plus an accessory display can be driven off of a single R9 290X.<\/li>\n<li>PowerColor offers a 2-year warranty and good customer service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Cons<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The PowerColor R9 290X <em>Battlefield 4<\/em> game bundle (for $30 more than $549 for no bundle) is inferior to Nvidia&#8217;s 3-game Holiday bundle with every GTX 780\/Ti.<\/li>\n<li>Noise.\u00a0 Uber mode is loud and 100% fan required for a maximum overclock is completely intolerable.\u00a0 The reference cooler is inadequate to keep the Hawaii GPU from throttling in Uber mode even in a cool room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Verdict:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are looking for a $549 card, or $579 bundled with <em>Battlefield 4<\/em>, and don&#8217;t mind fan noise or are looking to watercool it, the R9 290X may be a good choice.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the AMD reference cooler is simply inferior to Nvidia&#8217;s coolers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We do not know what the future will bring, but we are certainly looking forward to the non-reference cooling for Hawaii and R9 290X. If you currently game on an older generation video card, you will do yourself a big favor by upgrading. The competition is hot and Nvidia offers their own set of features including multi-display Surround and PhysX.
