They gave me their money with no strings attached.\u201d \u2013 <strong>Dr. Cole Hendron, \u201cWhen Worlds Collide,\u201d Paramount, 1951<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>You probably never thought much about why Google bought YouTube or why they\u2019re building out fiber in the U.S. and putting wireless blimps up in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s their unofficial\u00a0 motto, \u201cDon\u2019t be evil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe it was because they could see around the corner that video wasn\u2019t going to just be big, it was going to be huge. And to view it properly, you need really big pipes.<\/p>\n<p>If it isn\u2019t fast, you won\u2019t click on the embedded ads or marketing videos.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, there are still a lot of folks who are perfectly satisfied to plunk on the sofa and watch whatever is on.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s probably why Analysys Mason\u2019s recent EU, US survey showed that only one in five respondents said they had a smart TV and less than half of those were connected to the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>The firm believes more people have them than know it but it also means there\u2019s no compelling reasons to connect \u2013 content, applications \u2013 or to use the smart features are just slapped on, rather than smoothly integrated into the set.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frayed Cord<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If they get it all together there may be more cord-cutting, leaving the cable company but that\u2019s probably more wishful thinking than fact.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40929\" alt=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-22.jpg?resize=381%2C420\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-22.jpg?resize=381%2C420 381w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-22-136x150.jpg 136w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-22-272x300.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em>Cutting Back<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 While a lot of people in the industry like to point to the few who have cut their cable cord as the definitive trend, market studies show that people are really being much more selective of the services they keep, pay for and those they go to the Internet for. There\u2019s a major shift in cable service and online entertainment.\u00a0 <\/em><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because TV watching is changing and people are doing more things while sitting in front of the set.<\/p>\n<p>A recent InMobi report found that 62 percent of mobile web users had their other screens working while watching TV.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-32.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40930\" alt=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=410%2C316\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=410%2C316 410w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-32-150x115.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-32-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em>No Couch Potato<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 Sitting down to enjoy some TV entertainment is increasingly turning into a content, contact, share, interactive activity as people use their other mobile devices to find out more and do more.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because there\u2019s just more to do as the content business folks \u2013 program developers, distributors \u2013 are adding more rich content for 2nd\/3rd screen folks to explore so they can be more involved with their shows, artists.<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s just more content out there to choose from.<\/p>\n<p>As Dr. Bronson explained, \u201cIf our calculations prove to be correct, this will be the most frightening discovery of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People throw 100 hours of video up on YouTube \u2026 every second.<\/p>\n<p>Today, it\u2019s not just stupid cat videos either. With all of the web video content that is being posted today around the globe, that tail has not only gotten longer but also fatter.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\nChris White\u2019s (Wired editor) \u201cLong Tail\u201d prophecy of content is coming true \u2026 in spades!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Longer Tail<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cisco estimates that by 2016, it will take more than six million years to watch all the video that crosses the global iNet in a month \u2013 1.2M minutes of video every second!<\/p>\n<p>Equating all the content to the universe, the narrator said, \u201cThere are more stars in the heavens than there are human beings on Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With all that content available, it\u2019s no wonder people are using every device they can to watch it all.<br \/>\n<em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-63.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40933\" alt=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-63.jpg?resize=493%2C390\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-63.jpg?resize=493%2C390 493w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-63-150x118.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-63-300x237.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Multiple Choice<\/strong> \u2013 Now before people sit down and click through the channels to watch a little TV, they also have to figure out which device they are going to watch it o, where they are going to watch it and when. Options are the new standard today.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\nWhile it doesn\u2019t come as much of a surprise, most folks like their content free but increasingly, they are also willing to pay for good video \u2013 just look at Netflix\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<p>Because people prefer not to shell out their money \u2013 directly, they also are coming to accept ads in their streaming video.<\/p>\n<p>The good thing about iNet-based video is that the content delivery folks can almost instantly wrap-up and send you ads that are tailored to your tastes, wants, needs (Big Data makes it super easy to profile you).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-72.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40934\" alt=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-72.jpg?resize=443%2C415\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-72.jpg?resize=443%2C415 443w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-72-150x140.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-72-300x281.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em><strong>Free is O.K<\/strong>. \u2013 While there will always be a greater number of people who prefer their video content free (paid for by advertisers), there are a growing number of people who are interested in (and willing) to pay for premium content&#8211;especially if they can view it on multiple devices.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re like us and actually like ads, that\u2019s not all bad.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bronson commented, \u201cHendron will pay you on delivery. Time is all that counts. The money doesn&#8217;t matter at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mobile Viewing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Increasingly, our kids and most GenCers, GenXers, seem to be using their tablet because it gives them greater freedom, greater options.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re not tied to a specific room (or even in the house) or a specific time.<br \/>\nSince they have the tablet with them \u2013 constantly \u2013 it just makes viewing more in tune with them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-82.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40935\" alt=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-82.jpg?resize=628%2C360\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-82.jpg?resize=628%2C360 628w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-82-150x85.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-82-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em><strong>Second Best <\/strong>\u2013 The tablet screen leans to more personal viewing and is less of a strain on the eyes for more mature viewers. Video viewing on a tablet is the second most popular use for the portable devices (behind games) because people can enjoy their content where they want and when they want.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of course, this doesn\u2019t mean that the all-powerful smartphone is being relegated to something for playing games (game play is still the #1 entertainment source for smartphones), tweet, text.<\/p>\n<p>Mobile video viewing is the pinnacle of Me TV.<\/p>\n<p>The only challenge has been the lack of a good \u2013 heck, even halfway decent \u2013 program guide.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s finally been addressed by Clicker, an online video search engine\/program guide that lets you find, share, rate, talk about content with your smartphone (iOS or Android). It not only catalogs TV shows and movies, but also Web originals, live events, music videos \u2026 in other words, all of that is being posted\/hosted 24&#215;7.<\/p>\n<p>That (and there will be competitors) is going to be one busy little sort\/search engine because Cisco projects that by 2017, over half of the total iNet traffic will be carried over content delivery networks (CDNs).<\/p>\n<p>Globally, there will be nearly 2 billion Internet video users (excluding smartphones) who will be increase entertainment traffic 5-fold to more than 6.5EB\/mo.<\/p>\n<p>And for the \u201cheavy\u201d video consumers (younger generations), the smartphone is often their device of choice because they can do more than passively view, they can exchange information with the content provider and each other.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-91.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40936\" alt=\"Untitled-9\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-91.jpg?resize=535%2C618\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-91.jpg?resize=535%2C618 535w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-91-129x150.jpg 129w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Untitled-91-259x300.jpg 259w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Smart Video<\/strong> \u2013 In many parts of the world the smartphone is their first (and only) computing\/communications device.
