We have been using the Predator premium RAM that we received from Kingston for a couple of months, and we want to share our experiences with it at 2800MHz, compared with running it at the stock 1600MHz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Previously, testing Ivy Bridge with <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/kingston-beast\/all\/1\/\">Kingston&#8217;s Beast<\/a> RAM at 2133MHz brought limited gains in gaming, and only to a few games. Since we have topped out our RAM clocks with Ivy Bridge at 2400MHz, we will only use the Haswell platform since its RAM can reach 2800MHz and beyond. However, this time we have a faster CPU and a faster video card, the GTX 780 Ti, which is able to differentiate between CPUs at 1920&#215;1080 resolution and above, without resorting to using multiple graphics cards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In this evaluation, we shall focus on 2x4GB of superfast Kingston&#8217;s Hyper-X Predator RAM at speeds of 2800MHz while using a Kingston 240GB HyperX SSD for benching. We want to see if it is worth it for an enthusiast gamer to spend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104413\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104413', '$229 at Newegg']);\" >$229 at Newegg<\/a> for 8GB of premium HyperX Predator RAM PC3-22400 (2800MHz) which is generally more expensive than 16GB of 1600MHz DDR3. These high-profile 54mm DIMMS are built for speed and for even more extreme overclocking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Benchmarks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We will test ten games, including our eight newest games. And we shall benchmark using synthetic and real world tests. We are benching using the fastest single-GPU videocard, the <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/evga-gtx-780-reference-version-benchmarked-30-games\/\">GTX 780 Ti<\/a>, to give you a comparison of the Kingston RAM at 1600MHz versus at 2800MHz in game benchmarks at 1920&#215;1200 and 2560&#215;1600 resolutions and at the maximum details that gamers play at. We are using the <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=29157\">GTX 680<\/a> to test the Kingston RAM using the rest of our benching suite to maintain consistency with ABT&#8217;s benching for the past two years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Issues with System RAM and Overclocking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The ECS Golden Series <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecs.com.tw\/ECSWebSite\/Product\/Product_Detail.aspx?DetailID=1476&amp;CategoryID=1&amp;DetailName=Feature&amp;MenuID=181&amp;LanID=0\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.ecs.com.tw\/ECSWebSite\/Product\/Product_Detail.aspx?DetailID=1476&amp;CategoryID=1&amp;DetailName=Feature&amp;MenuID=181&amp;LanID=0', 'Z87H3-A2X']);\" >Z87H3-A2X<\/a> is ECS&#8217; premium enthusiast motherboard and it has allowed us to stably overclock our Core i7-4770K to 4.5GHz, although we have been using 4.2GHz for all of our current testing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When setting CPU overclocks it is usually recommended to move the RAM speeds to default, 1600MHz, or lower. However, we found no stability difference either way, and we kept our Kingston HyperX Predator DDR3 at its rather extreme XMP Profile 1 default 2800MHz clocks for our overclocked benching.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Before we head over to our test configuration and benchmarking, let&#8217;s open the package. <!--pagetitle:Introducing the Kingston HyperX Predator--><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Unboxing &amp; Installation--> <strong>Unboxing and Installation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Kingston uses blue for their Predator RAM which is quite unusual. Fortunately, our Thermaltake tower also uses blue accents and the RAM fits right in. The tool contains synthetic and practice tests. The synthetic tests determine the sequential and random read and write performance of the SSD without use of the operating system caches. In Seq-test the program measures how long it takes to read and write a 1 GB file.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the 4K test, read and write performance for random 4K blocks are determined. The 4K-64-thrd test are similar to the 4K procedure except that the read and write operations on 64 threads are distributed as in the usual start of a program. In the copying test, two large ISO file folders are created, programs with many small files, and a games folder with small and large files. These three folders are copied by the OS copy command with the cache turned on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The practice tests show performance with simultaneous read and write operations AS SSD gives an overall &#8220;score&#8221; after it runs the benchmarks. These scores and comparisons are summed up in the performance summary charts. All games have their setting completely maxed out and levels of AA are identified on the chart. Are the results significant? Not really, however, for the enthusiast looking to get every bit of performance out of the Haswell platform, faster RAM will make a difference.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you are a gamer, you can definitely &#8220;get by&#8221; with using RAM at stock speeds although 4GB of system RAM is no longer sufficient to play some games (<em>Call of Duty: Ghosts<\/em>, for example) and 8GB appears to be the new minimum for a fast gaming platform.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Let&#8217;s head for our conclusion. \u00a0 <!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Conclusion--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There is absolutely no doubt that running RAM at a faster faster clock speed produces performance gains and saves time in most common tasks, especially with multi-tasking but also including video encoding and decoding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We also saw improvements in framerates with the Predator RAM clocked at 2800MHz over running at the stock 1600MHz. Should a gamer upgrade to premium fast RAM? Probably not from running at 1600MHz especially if overclocking is possible, but if a gamer is buying a new CPU and motherboard now, faster RAM can make a performance difference.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Kingston Predator HyperX PC2800- Pros and Cons<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Pros<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The Kingston HyperX Predator RAM is very fast 2800MHz DDR3 that is built for high speeds. It is an enthusiast&#8217;s dream. Fast, stable, and dependable &#8211; it just works.<\/li>\n<li>It comes with a lifetime warranty along with great customer service and tech support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Cons<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Costs. 8GB costs about as much or more than 16GB of standard 1600MHz RAM.<\/li>\n<li>High profile.\u00a0 The Predator RAM has such a high profile it may not work well with all CPU heatsinks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>The Verdict <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EDITORsCHOICE.jpg?resize=135%2C226\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you are an enthusiast with premium components who wishes to gain every last bit of performance out of your PC, then the Kingston HyperX Predator DDR3 at 2800MHz is an excellent choice. It is an especially good choice for Haswell as it brings real performance gains over using RAM at the stock 1600MHz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Kingston HyperX Predator RAM is priced the same as other premium DDR3 and it is backed by Kingston who gives a lifetime warranty and excellent support. We feel it deserves ABT&#8217;s Editor&#8217;s Choice Award.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">However, if you are on a budget, you are more likely to spend less on faster RAM speeds and settle for 1600MHz RAM and perhaps try for an overclock. For gaming, 8GB is sufficient although for other tasks, 16GB might be preferable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For ABT&#8217;s flagship Core i7-4770K PC, running everyday tasks and for most of our benchmarking, we have settled on using 16GB of Kingston HyperX BeastDDR3 which runs at 2133MHz. It is faster than the stock speeds of 1600MHz; it brings advantages of 16GB over 8GB, and the DIMMs are much lower profile than the Predator RAM which allows us to easily test more CPU coolers. For testing extreme overclocks or for extracting every bit of performance out of our Haswell platform, we will use the Predator RAM at 2800MHz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We are looking forward to our next evaluation early next week which will feature the new GTX 750 Ti as a dedicated PhysX card when paired with a GTX 780 Ti or with GTX 680 SLI.
