Besides comparing the Galaxy Slim at Galaxy factory clocks (GC) with the reference GTX 750 Ti, we will also overclock it further using the very latest WHQL drivers to remove the clock lock, mod the BIOS to remove the TPD limitation, and expand on using the GTX 750 Ti as the ideal stand-alone <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/using-maxwells-gtx-750-ti-dedicated-physx-card\/\">dedicated PhysX<\/a> card, by pairing two GTX 750 Tis with each other.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Galaxy GTX 750 Ti Slim&#8217;s Competition &#8211; the missing in action R7 265 &#8211; and Crypto-mining <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Nearly a month ago, AMD paper-launched the R7 265 which should be faster than the GTX 750 Ti at a MSRP of $149.\u00a0 Finally, last Thursday, a single SKU of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=14-202-096&amp;nm\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=14-202-096&amp;nm', 'Sapphire R7 265']);\" >Sapphire R7 265<\/a> briefly appeared at Newegg only to sell out within a few minutes and before ABT could purchase it for benching.\u00a0 Evidently it has not made an appearance at any other North American etailer\/retailer since launch which only leaves the slower-than-the GTX 750 Ti, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&amp;DEPA=0&amp;Order=BESTMATCH&amp;Description=r7+260x&amp;N=-1&amp;isNodeId=1\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&amp;DEPA=0&amp;Order=BESTMATCH&amp;Description=r7+260x&amp;N=-1&amp;isNodeId=1', '2GB R7 260X,']);\" >2GB R7 260X,<\/a> which costs from $139-$159 at Newegg, to compete on price with the GTX 750 Ti.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Even if the R7 265 makes it into general release, it is likely that there may be issues with AMD\u2019s being unable to hold pricing on the R7 265 at $149.\u00a0 Basically R7 265 is a slightly faster Pitcarin HD 7850-2GB (or a cut down R9 270) which already commands a premium and sells for up to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&amp;IsNodeId=1&amp;Description=hd%207850&amp;bop=And&amp;Order=PRICE&amp;PageSize=20\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&amp;IsNodeId=1&amp;Description=hd%207850&amp;bop=And&amp;Order=PRICE&amp;PageSize=20', '$200']);\" >$200<\/a> at US etailers due to its ability to mine alternate crypto-currency like LiteCoin.\u00a0 The R7 265 also has a board power of 150W, well above the 60W of the GTX 750 Ti.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The R7 260X is not as desired a mining card in about the same performance class as an overclocked HD 7790, and it has already had its price adjusted downward to around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&amp;N=-1&amp;IsNodeId=1&amp;Description=260x&amp;bop=And&amp;Order=PRICE&amp;PageSize=20\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&amp;N=-1&amp;IsNodeId=1&amp;Description=260x&amp;bop=And&amp;Order=PRICE&amp;PageSize=20', '$129 at Newegg']);\" >$129 at Newegg<\/a> while the overclocked HD 7770s and HD 7790s still sit in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&amp;DEPA=0&amp;Order=BESTMATCH&amp;Description=hd+7770&amp;N=-1&amp;isNodeId=1\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&amp;DEPA=0&amp;Order=BESTMATCH&amp;Description=hd+7770&amp;N=-1&amp;isNodeId=1', '$110-120 range']);\" >$110-120 range<\/a> along with the 260-nonX.\u00a0 ABT recommended the PowerColor <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/maxwell-arrives\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/powercolor-270x-pcs-review\/\">R9 270X<\/a> which launched originally at $199 as a good value, while now it easily commands a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&amp;DEPA=0&amp;Order=BESTMATCH&amp;Description=r9+270x&amp;N=-1&amp;isNodeId=1\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&amp;DEPA=0&amp;Order=BESTMATCH&amp;Description=r9+270x&amp;N=-1&amp;isNodeId=1', '$40-100 price premium']);\" >$40-100 price premium<\/a> due to its demand as a mining card.\u00a0 Because of mining demands, the R9 270X is in the same $250 price range as the faster GTX 760.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">SiSoft\u2019s latest Sandra \u201cGPGPU Crypto\u201d benchmark indicates that Maxwell scores far higher than Kepler, perhaps due to more registers per SM and other architectural changes.\u00a0 It appears that the GTX 750 Ti may also be desirable as a mining card and we are interested to see if miners will buy them in large quantities and\/or if Nvidia can hold the price on its partners&#8217; GTX 750 Ti cards since AMD is unable to control pricing with its partner cards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In our <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/maxwell-arrives\/\">original evaluation<\/a>, we compared the reference GTX 750 Ti to the Sapphire factory overclocked Vapor-X HD 7770 which it demolished, as well as to Nvidia\u2019s last generation, the GTX 650 Ti which it replaced as significantly faster, and also to AMD\u2019s faster and more expensive ($200 plus) R7 270X. We also compared the new GTX 750 Ti to the GTX 480 to get an overall idea of the new GTX 750 Ti performance stock and overclocked compared with the Fermi flagship of less than 4 years ago, and it did quite well.\u00a0 And of course, we placed the GTX 750 Ti into a performance hierarchy all the way up to the R9 290X and the GTX 780 Ti.\u00a0 This evaluation uses the same WHQL drivers and focuses on the Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim at several stages of overclock including with the TDP limitation removed by a BIOS mod.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We will still use our Core i7-4770K at 4.0GHz which equalizes very well to our previous Ivy Bridge benches with Core i7-3770K at 4.5GHz.\u00a0 We use 2x8GB of super-fast Kingston HyperX \u201cBeast\u201d DDR3 at 2133MHz in an ECS flagship Z87 \u201cGolden\u201d motherboard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Let&#8217;s unbox and then test our Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim after we check out its features and specifications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--pagetitle: Introduction--><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Features &amp; specifications--><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Features<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/installed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-41202\" alt=\"installed\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/installed-300x274.jpg?resize=300%2C274\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/installed-300x274.jpg?resize=300%2C274 300w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/installed-150x137.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/installed.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>The Galaxy\u00a0 GTX 750 Ti GC Slim is physically much smaller than the reference version.\u00a0 It is considered &#8220;LP&#8221; or low-profile and can fit into low profile and slim PC cases.\u00a0 It comes with the stock bracket, but for a limited time, the low-profile bracket is free with a GTX 750 or 750 Ti Slim purchase from the Galaxy store.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To the right, we see how much wider the reference version is than the Galaxy GTx 750 Ti GC Slim card when both are used together with the reference version dedicated to PhysX calculations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Galaxy\u00a0 GTX 750 Ti GC Slim uses custom cooling for the GM107 GPU which is also powered only by the PCIe slot and it is recommended that you use a quality 300W PSU as a minimum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Let&#8217;s compare the Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim with the GTX 750 Ti reference version and pay particular attention to the Base and Boost clocks. Our Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim edition is already overclocked +52MHz over the Nvidia reference clocks. We were able to overclock a further +135MHz with complete stability even though we did not adjust the voltage nor our fan profile. We also managed +600MHz on the memory clocks which were respectable and 50Hz higher than we could reach with the reference version.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The main limitation to overclocking the GTX 750 Ti is that the software is limited in the drivers to a maximum offset of +135MHz.\u00a0 This means that our maximum boost was 1337MHz, a substantial jump over the reference Ti&#8217;s clocks Boost of 1284MHz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Fortunately, on Monday, the day that we expected to publish this review, Nvidia released new WHQL drivers that remove the +135MHz maximum clock offset.\u00a0 We were able to gain another +25MHz to reach a maximum Boost of 1361Mhz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Removing TDP limitations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We also used a BIOS that was modded by <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptomining-blog.com\/1014-how-to-increase-the-geforce-gtx-750-ti-power-target-limit\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/cryptomining-blog.com\/1014-how-to-increase-the-geforce-gtx-750-ti-power-target-limit\/', 'CryptoMiningBlog.com']);\" >CryptoMiningBlog.com<\/a> that removed the TDP limitations as it returned the GC to factory clocks.\u00a0 However, bearing in mind that the GC is clocked +52MHz higher than the reference version, we were able to offset +220MHz on the (now reference clocked) core with the modded reference BIOS, or +8MHz higher with the TDP limitations removed than with them in place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1369-boost.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-41242\" alt=\"1369-boost\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1369-boost-210x300.jpg?resize=210%2C300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1369-boost-210x300.jpg?resize=210%2C300 210w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1369-boost-105x150.jpg 105w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1369-boost.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>What was particularly interesting is that the benches run at 1369MHz Boost with the TDP limitations removed have significantly higher performance than an 8MHz gain from 1361MHz would normally bring and\u00a0 they can easily be seen in the performance summary charts.\u00a0 We also found more stability with the voltage left at stock.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Even with overclocking further, temperatures generally stayed below 75C and the fan rarely exceeded 55%. Because of it&#8217;s custom fan design, the Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim is a quiet card, even quieter than the very quiet reference version.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For our testing of the Galaxy GTX 750 Ti, we usually move the temperature target to its maximum 90C. In this way we do not allow lack of power nor moderate temperatures to throttle performance. Likewise, we also max the PowerTune slider for AMD cards.\u00a0 However, in this case, the temperatures settings never &#8220;stick&#8221; and they always default back to 80C.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Let&#8217;s head to the performance charts to see how the Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim compares with the reference GTX 750 Ti. <!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle: Performance Summary Charts--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Performance summary charts &amp; graphs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here are the summary charts of 21 modern PC games and 3 synthetic tests. The highest settings are generally chosen and it is DX11 when there is a choice; DX10 is picked above DX9, and the settings are generally ultra or maxed unless specified on the chart. Specific settings are listed on the Main Performance chart. The benches are run at 1920&#215;1200 and at 2560&#215;1600.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Main Overall Summary chart<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><\/strong>In the first column of the main performance summary chart are the performance results for the highly overclocked Sapphire Vapor-X HD 7770 which represents the performance of the HD 7790 and the R7 260.\u00a0 In the second column is the GTX 650 Ti which debuted also at $149 and is the card the GTX 750 Ti is replacing.\u00a0 Column three is the stock GTX 750 Ti and in column 4 is the stock Galaxy factory clocked GTX 750 Ti GC Slim.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the fifth column (750 Ti OC) we present the reference GTX 750 Ti overclocked 135MHz as far as software allowed it, together with a +550MHz boost to the memory.\u00a0 In the six column we see the GTX 750 Ti GC Slim (Galaxy OC) at +135MHz core\/+600MHz memory offset to reach a Boost of 1337MHz.\u00a0 The seventh column (Galaxy SC) is the software unlimited +160MHz core\/+600MHz memory which reach a Boost of 1361MHz.\u00a0 And the eighth column (Galaxy UL TDP) represents the completely unlocked TDP and clockspeeds which reached +168MHz core\/600MHz memory offsets for an ultimate boost of 1369MHz.\u00a0 The final ninth column is the $200-250 Radeon 270X (HD 7870 OC).<a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MainCht1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-41237\" alt=\"MainCht\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MainCht1.jpg?resize=720%2C759\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MainCht1.jpg?resize=720%2C759 1000w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MainCht1-142x150.jpg 142w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MainCht1-284x300.jpg 284w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MainCht1-971x1024.jpg 971w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>We clearly see the GTX 750 Ti GC Slim dominate over the reference and mildly overclocked HD 7770s and also the HD 7790s\/260s by extension. It did extraordinarily well performance-wise comparing it to the reference GTX 750 Ti. We are totally impressed with this cool-running entry-level GM107 card which is generally faster than it&#8217;s competitors in a similar price range.<a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/LP-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-41204 alignright\" alt=\"LP-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/LP-2.jpg?resize=288%2C217\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/LP-2.jpg?resize=288%2C217 800w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/LP-2-150x113.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/LP-2-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 The only card that may challenge it performance-wise is the still missing-in-action R7 265, but the Maxwell architecture card sips 60W of power from a single PCIe slot, while the Radeon uses 150W from the PCIe slot and two PCIe cables.\u00a0 And it will be interesting to see if the R7 265 and the GTX 750 Ti can hold their suggested $150 pricing if they become desirable for mining.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We see good overclockability with excellent quietness at stock voltage and fan profile even when the Galaxy GTX 750 Ti is overclocked beyond Galaxy&#8217;s factory overclock and it scales well in performance. Removing the artificial +135MHz clock speed cap and TDP allowed us to get every last bit of performance from this card using only the PCIe slot to draw its power.\u00a0 The Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim is quieter than the reference GTX 750 Ti, a very quiet card indeed and yet it is perfectly suited for playing demanding games at maxed out settings at 1920&#215;1080.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For its $159 price, the Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim gives more than 80% of the performance of the R7 270X which is priced at $200-250 and it also runs away from the highly overclocked HD 7770s and HD 7790s including the R7 260 series. From our results, we can expect the Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim will also generally be a bit faster than the fastest R7 260Xes. And at $159, it is priced to match them. For ten dollars more than the reference GTX 750 Ti costs, it makes sense to pick the Galaxy card, while giving the gamer Galaxy&#8217;s excellent support and a 3-year warranty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you are looking for a low-profile &#8220;slim&#8221; card in the $160 price range, there is really only one choice, the Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Pros<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim provides excellent performance for a $159 card and soundly beats the Radeons in performance per Watt.<\/li>\n<li>Overclockability is excellent &#8211; once the artificial limitations on the clockspeeds (and TDP) were removed &#8211; GPU Boost works as advertised and the memory overclock also helps performance.<\/li>\n<li>The cooling design is quiet and efficient<\/li>\n<li>Surround can now be driven off of a single Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim.<\/li>\n<li>You get a 3 year warranty backed by 24\/7 tech support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Cons<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>No SLI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The Verdict:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are buying the fastest factory overclocked low-profile high-efficiency card for a slim or HTPC, the Galaxy GTX 750 Ti GC Slim is an easy choice for ten dollars more than the reference design.
