You&#8217;ll get used to it.\u201d \u2013<\/em><strong> Samantha, \u201cHer,\u201d Annapurna Pictures, 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you live in Silicon Valley, it\u2019s sometimes tough to realize that this isn\u2019t the real world.<\/p>\n<p>You know, high-speed Internet connections everywhere, enjoying 4G LTE (long term evolution) mobile service, everyone carrying an ultra light computer, tablet, smartphone (or two).<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re all on all the time, and they\u2019re all being used.<\/p>\n<p>In industrialized countries, Internet access has been holding stubbornly at about 80 percent of the population, and tablets haven\u2019t done anything to budge that penetration.<\/p>\n<p>With the increased home and office usage of the Internet, people in industrialized countries (and slowly in developing countries) are increasingly using the technology to reach out to\/communicate with others. This has resulted in:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nearly 20 million of the 225 million Twitter users follow 60 or more Twitter accounts and nearly 2 million follow more than 500 accounts<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 More than 800 million people are signed up on Facebook; spend 700 billion minutes on Facebook each month and install more than 20 million apps every day. Facebook users upload more than a million photos weekly<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 YouTube users upload 72 hours of video per minute and view tens of thousands of hours\u00a0 every day<\/p>\n<p>A friend\u2019s nine-year-old can\u2019t wait to get home after playing baseball to get online and chat\/play with friends \u2026 in England, Australia, Canada and other locations around the globe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Born Connected<\/strong><br \/>\nAccording to Pew Research 95 percent of teens ages 12-17 are online, 76 percent use social networking sites.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to the next age bracket (18-29), 96 percent are internet users and 84 percent use social media sites.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all perfectly normal.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is the connectivity varies for the 7B plus people on the planet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-24.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41348\" alt=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-24.jpg?resize=419%2C247\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-24.jpg?resize=419%2C247 419w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-24-150x88.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-24-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em><strong>Connectable<\/strong> &#8211; Currently, 2.7 billion people use the Internet&#8211;39 percent of the world\u2019s population. Europe has the highest use, followed by the Americas; but in Africa, only 16 percent use it, half of the rates of Asia and the Pacific. To economically speed connectivity in emerging countries, Google is considering balloons and Facebook drones.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Expanding people\u2019s connected lives there is already about one cellphone for all of those people.<\/p>\n<p>In the 12-17 age category 77 percent have cell phones and for 18-29 years of age 97 percent have cell phones.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of these in industrialized countries are smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>New low-cost phones are being introduced to first get people in countries such as Asia, Africa and Latin America online and then to better total communications \u2026 including music\/video immersion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-35.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41349\" alt=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-35.jpg?resize=624%2C260\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-35.jpg?resize=624%2C260 624w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-35-150x62.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-35-300x125.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong><em>Connectable Options<\/em> \u2013 <\/strong><em>While feature\/smart phones have enjoyed the greatest growth in recent years, there are signs of slowing sales for all of the devices \u2013 computers, tablets, phones. The answer to increasing device penetration in emerging countries means cheaper devices will have to be introduced to increase the number of people who are able to exchange information.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you step back a little, take a deep breath and look around, you see that technology is being seamlessly integrated into our lives and will effectively disappear.<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s futurist Ray Kurzweil and many anthropologists say the line between self and technology is already thin and with each new generation it fades even more. The line between self and technology is thin today.<\/p>\n<p>Soon it will simply vanish.<\/p>\n<p>The next crop of kids will assume this is the way the world works.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fiber Reach<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. has the most broadband subscribers (93 million) in the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries, but that isn\u2019t saying much.<\/p>\n<p>The country may be the largest (DSL-based) but when it comes to FTTH (Fiber To The Home), it isn\u2019t doing so hot.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-44.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41350\" alt=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-44.jpg?resize=628%2C450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-44.jpg?resize=628%2C450 628w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-44-150x107.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-44-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em><strong>Fiber Tomorrow<\/strong> \u2013 While the U.S. ranks with the best when it comes to broadband connectivity, the coverage is based on DSL (slow) service. When it comes to being able to handle the bandwidth needs of tomorrow, the country falls slightly below the middle of the pack and that fiber comes at a cost to the consumer.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fiber everywhere \u2013 especially to the home \u2013 isn\u2019t just a nicety, it\u2019s needed to handle tomorrow\u2019s volumes.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. wireless penetration is second only to Japan; and the always-with-you, always-on mobile device dominates the connection for millennials and younger who grew up with the devices.<\/p>\n<p>Theodore said vehemently, \u201cShe&#8217;s not just a computer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The highly versatile smartphone is so popular it is also the most stolen \u2013 30-40 percent of robberies \u2013 (and most lost) device.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s so bad, lawmakers are proposing mandatory kill switches on the devices and Boeing introduced a <strong>Mission Impossible<\/strong> self-destruct phone that\u2019s gotten lots of attention.<\/p>\n<p>Kill switch sounds sorta\u2019, kinda\u2019 good as long as you don\u2019t think too hard about it because it also means someone\/something will have to constantly monitor the device and its location.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Internet of Everything<\/strong><br \/>\nIt will all be part of the master plan IoE (Internet of Everything) or SoE (Surveillance of Everything).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, since we share everything on every social site that\u2019s available, that really shouldn\u2019t be such an issue because once you\u2019re totally connected, you\u2019ve really abandon privacy.<\/p>\n<p>As Amy noted, <em>\u201cI can over think everything and find a million ways to doubt myself.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-54.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41351\" alt=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-54.jpg?resize=306%2C318\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-54.jpg?resize=306%2C318 306w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-54-144x150.jpg 144w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-54-288x300.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em><strong>No Ellen<\/strong> \u2013 Ellen Degeneres and her celebrity selfie had a terrific impact on Twitter during the Oscars typically, selfies are shot and then deleted.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Guess people do that to protect their privacy.<\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s see \u2026 name your government agency of choice, search engines and their advertisers,\u00a0 Big Data gatherers\/analysts, all those freemium and paid (yes even paid) apps and cybertrackers\/crooks. The more opportunities present themselves the more people seem to want to share.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today, the growing majority \u2013 especially millennials and younger \u2013 aren\u2019t just connected, they\u2019re hyperconnected.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest. Security has been an issue since the first day Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn, the fathers of the Internet (no, not Al Gore) unleashed the Internet on us.<\/p>\n<p>Even though you erase\/block cookies, block ads\/script, prevent sending of local information and use encryption as online activities expanded and more objects (things) are connected, opting out of the surveillance system becomes \u2026 difficult.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, security is always one or two steps behind cyberthieves (and you\u2019re pretty nonchalant about what you protect) so breaches on bank data, credit cards, site user information and business\/government sites are increasingly frequent and profitable.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the danger, there is no sign of backing away from the constant stream of information coming to us from our tethered mobile devices.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when Samantha said, <em>\u201cI&#8217;ve been thinking about how to talk to you about this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Being constantly on has blurred the boundaries between work\/home, responses are expected immediately and the store is always open.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-73.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41353\" alt=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-73.jpg?resize=358%2C285\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-73.jpg?resize=358%2C285 358w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-73-150x119.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-73-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em><strong>Dining Conversation<\/strong> \u2013 It\u2019s a little difficult to eat, let alone carry on a meaningful conversation, when everyone at the table is reading text\/email messages, posting on web sites and researching his\/her next date. Since some people can\u2019t restrain themselves, a growing number of restaurants are enforcing a no phone use policy. Add ditching baseball caps at the table and I\u2019ll be real happy.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a big believer in the world of connected and personalized everything because frankly, there is no turning back \u2026 once you\u2019re connected, you\u2019re connected.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buying Privacy<\/strong><br \/>\nBut if you want privacy, it\u2019ll cost you!<\/p>\n<p>Surveillance and privacy were so important at SXSW that they piped in \u201cretired\u201d NSAer Snowden and Wikileaks Assange (being in Austin would have meant handcuffs).<\/p>\n<p>Millions of messages (text, photos and videos) are being sent every day everywhere in the world using military-grade encryption technology between folks who just aren\u2019t interested in sharing their stuff with you, me, the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Security, privacy are sorta\u2019 opposite sides of the coin when people have such a need to share:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pew Research found that 60-plus percent of teens to 24-year-olds have to sleep with their device<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Five minutes after leaving your house\/office (which has a phone) you have to call\/text drive<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Two people sitting down to enjoy each other and food have to monitor their online life<\/p>\n<p>It almost seems to be an over-dependence on our technology because 99.99 percent of the time that information will be there even if you don\u2019t turn the device on for an hour or two.<\/p>\n<p>And if it isn\u2019t, how are you going to know you missed it?<\/p>\n<p>I agree with Google\u2019s Kurzweil that people will improve because of and with our technology and our ability to access, share, exchange and digest information.<\/p>\n<p>In the long-term, we\u2019ll learn how to deal with it and it will have a positive effect.<\/p>\n<p>Still, there are times when people have to disconnect, go offline and focus on creatively solving problems, resolving issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Communications is vital.<\/strong><br \/>\nSo is being alone with yourself or another person.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-81.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41354\" alt=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-81.jpg?resize=425%2C244\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-81.jpg?resize=425%2C244 425w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-81-150x86.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Untitled-81-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>If you don\u2019t, you might feel like Theodore when he said, <em>\u201cSometimes I think I have felt everything I&#8217;m ever gonna feel.
