GTC 2014 was held March 24-27, in San Jose, California.

The very first article that this editor wrote for AlienBabelTech covered Nvision 08 – a combination of LAN party and the first GPU computing technology conference. The second time was the following year, at GTC 2009, when it was held at the Fairmont Hotel, across the street from the San Jose Convention Center, and it introduced Fermi architecture. The third GTC 2012 that ABT attended was held two years ago, and it introduced Kepler architecture.

We have had more than two weeks to think about the GTC and this is our summary of it. And bearing in mind past GTCs, we cannot help but compare them to each other.

The GTC 2014 highlights for this editor included attempting to learn more about Nvidia’s future roadmap as well as noting Nvidia’s progress in GPU computing over the past 6 years. Each attendee at the GTC will have their own unique account of their time spent at the GTC. The GTC is a combination trade show/networking/educational event attended by close to three thousand people, each of whom may have their own unique schedule and personal reasons for attending. All of them have in common their passion for GPU computing. This editor’s primary reason for attending this year was for the minority report – the interest in GeForce (and now Tegra) GPU technology primarily for PC (and now Android) gaming.

Nvidia used the GTC to debut a great array of new technology even though everything currently is built on mostly 28nm architecture, the Kepler generation of GPU processing power. We have only had a taste of Nvidia’s next generation Maxwell architecture, and it is much more powerful as well as significantly more energy-efficient than Kepler, and Nvidia intends to use it to continue to revolutionize GPU and cloud computing, including for gaming.

Everything has certainly grown since the first GTC in 2009. Nvidia is again using the remodeled San Jose Convention Center for their show just as they will do for 2015 – returning to their original venue for Nvision08. Each time the GTC schedule becomes far more packed than the year previously, and this editor was forced to make some hard choices, to attend a few of the sessions and to skip many others.

The GTC at a Glance

Here is the GTC schedule “at a glance”.

There has been some real progress with signage at the upgraded San Jose Convention Center. No longer does Nvidia have to make do with an entire wall covered with posters, but now the electronic signs are updated daily and there is far less clutter making it much easier for the attendees.

We will take a look at each day that we spent at the GTC and briefly focus on the sessions that we attended.

Monday

We arrived Monday afternoon, flying in from Palm Springs to San Francisco airport in just over an hour. The temperature in Palm Springs was 85F and San Francisco was 65F. San Jose, about an hour’s drive away in traffic and 35 miles inland, is more moderate with Monday’s daytime highs in the 70sF. On Tuesday, a cold front dropped the temperatures into the 60s, and brought much-needed rain to Northern California.

After picking up our press pass, we were surprised to see that the formerly 180 page printed GTC Program Guide and many pages of press-related material, were no longer available. Instead, printing stations were set up so that each attendee could customize and print their own schedule. There was one kiosk available with pre-printed daily schedules, but you had to ask for them. Everything else was online for convenience and conservation, and the Convention Center’s Wi-Fi was better than tolerable. The wired connection in the Marriott was excellent, however, and 6 or 7MB/s peak downloads were not unusual, and it would rarely drop below 1MB/s, even when everyone was online at once.

Nvidia treats their attendees and press well, and there was a nice backpack included with the $900 all-event pass to the GTC. The press gets in free. A very nice commemorative GPU Technology T-shirt is also included, and this year, each attendee got a SHIELD. I am still looking forward to unboxing mine, my first gaming console since Sega’s Genesis.

Monday was set aside for the hardcore programmers and the developer-focused sessions were mostly advanced. There was a poster reception between 4-6PM and anyone could talk to or interview the exhibitors who were mostly researchers from leading universities and organizations who were focusing on GPU-enabled research. The press had an early 6-9 PM evening reception at the St. Claire Hotel across the street from the convention center and this editor got to see very few of his friends from past events. Smaller hardware review sites like ABT do not usually attend the GTC. The GTC is also all about networking. There are those looking for capital for starting or building businesses, and those with venture capital to lend, and of course, advertising. Most of all, it was for sharing information to advance GPU programming.

There were dinners scheduled and tables reserved at some of San Jose’s finest restaurants for the purpose of getting like-minded individuals together. And discussions were scheduled at some of the dinners while some of them were devoted to discussing programming, while still others talked business, or just enjoyed the food.

ABT forum members and readers are particularly interested in the Maxwell architecture as it relates to gaming and we knew going in that very little would be said about anything other than about the GTX 750/Ti. However, we were not disappointed as Nvidia is definitely oriented toward gaming, graphics and computing and we eagerly heard about GeForce and the announcement of Nvidia’s $3000 dual-GPU TITAN Z. And Jensen’s Keynote on Tuesday reinforced Nvidia’s commitment to gaming.

Tuesday featuring Jensen’s Keynote

Tuesday, March 25, 2014 – after the keynote

Applications of GPU Computing to Mission Design and Satellite Operations at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center

OpenGL: 2014 and Beyond

A GPU-Based Free-Viewpoint Video System for Surgical Training

Practical Real-Time Voxel-Based Global Illumination for Current GPUs

Smoke & Mirrors: Advanced Volumetric Effects for Games

Besides, Jensen’s Keynote from 9AM to 11AM, this editor attended the above sessions. At each of the previous GTCs, we have been following the progress of NASA using the GPU, we checked out programming; we have been following the GPU in medical research; and we are especially interested in what FlameWorks and Pixar have been most recently working on. And we were not disappointed as much progress has been made from year-to-year, and it has been 24 months since our last GTC. Before we look at each of these sessions, let’s check out the GTC’s Keynote address.

The GTC Keynote Address always sets the stage for each GTC. Nvidia’s CEO outlines the progress that they have been making in CUDA and with hardware since the last GTC. And this year, there were six major announcements that we shall look at in detail. The other sessions that we attended were related to the keynote and we have been following their progress since the first GTC.

We can look back on each of Jensen’s Keynotes since Nvision08 as a progress report and the state of CUDA and GPU computing. Each year, besides introducing new companies to GPU computing, we see the same companies invited back – including Pixar and VMworks – and we see their incredible progress which is tied to the GPU and its increases in performance. Each year, for example, we see Pixar delivering more and more incredible graphics and each movie requires exponentially more processing power than the one before it. This is progress that is *impossible* using the CPU. And it is almost now taken for granted.

The Keynote speech delivered by Nvidia’s superstar CEO Jen-Hsun Huang (aka “Jensen”) highlighted the rapid growth of GPU computing from its humble beginnings. No longer is GPU computing in the background, as shown by ten of the world’s top ten “greenest” and most power-efficient supercomputers now all run Nvidia GPU technology inside. Jensen made several major announcements during his two hour keynote.

Major announcements during the keynote

NVLink is a high-speed interconnect between the CPU and the GPU which allows processors to share data approximately 5 to 12 times faster than what is possible currently.

Erista (son of Wolverine aka Parker) has been inserted into the Tegra roadmap between Logan and Parker to add Maxwell GPU architecture.

Pascal is the next architecture on Nvidia’s GPU roadmap which was inserted as new (since CES in January) between Maxwell and Volta. This time, there was no general press conference, and the press had to question Nvidia staff afterward for further details. Jensen called the GTC, “the Woodstock of computational mathematicians” and reaffirmed that CUDA and the invention of GPU computing is what launched the GTC.

As in previous keynotes, Jensen detailed the history and the incredible growth of GPU computing and how it is changing our lives for the better. From humble beginnings, GPU computing has grown significantly since the first Nvision08, just six years ago. CUDA is Nvidia’s own proprietary GPU language which can be considered similar to x86 for CPU. There were over 600 presentations at the GTC. graphics. It uses the PCIe programming model with DMA+ and it will function with Unified Memory and Cache coherency in Generation 2.0. It will significantly improve memory bandwidth by at least doubling the upcoming PCIe 4.0 specification and allowing a further up to 5X more bandwidth for multi-GPU (mGPU) scaling over the current standard.

Pascal Architecture – Needed for big data

NVLink will be introduced with Pascal architecture which is now scheduled after Maxwell and before Volta. Nvidia realizes that there needs to be a leap in performance from one generation to the next, and Pascal will feature stacked 3D memory interconnected by vias. ABT has been following the progress of 3D memory since our beginning.

3D or stacked memory is a technology which enables multiple layers of DRAM components to be integrated vertically on the package along with the GPU. Compared to current GDDR5 implementations, stacked memory provides significantly greater bandwidth, doubled capacity, and increased energy efficiency.

Faster data movement plus unified memory, will simplify GPU programming. Unified Memory allows the programmer to treat the CPU and GPU memories as one block of memory without worrying about whether it resides in the CPU’s or the GPU’s memory.

In addition to continuing to use PCIe, NVLink technology will be used for connecting GPUs to NVLink-enabled CPUs as well as for providing high-bandwidth connections directly between multiple GPUs. The basic building block for NVLink is a high-speed, 8-lane, differential, dual simplex bidirectional link.

Nvidia has designed a module to house GPUs based on the Pascal architecture with NVLink that is one-third the size of the standard PCIe boards used for GPUs today. Connectors at the bottom of the Pascal module enable it to be plugged into the motherboard, improving system design and signal integrity. It is also more energy-efficient than PCIe, despite the higher bandwidth.

The large increase in GPU memory size and bandwidth provided by 3D memory and NVLink will enable GPU applications to access a much larger working set of data at higher bandwidth, improving efficiency and computational throughput, and reducing the frequency of off-GPU transfers allowing it to handle Big Data.

The Google Brain and the need for Big Data

Jensen next talked about research that has taken place with the “Google Brain” which consists of 1000 CPU servers (16,000 cores) using 600 KWh of power in just five days, and costing $5 million dollars. Unfortunately, it is woefully short of what the human brain can do, being more comparable to a honey bee’s brain which is still more complex.

In contrast to the Google Brain, the human brain, on average, contains 100 billion neurons with each 1000 connections – or about 100 trillion connections. terrorist threats – safely and quickly – using the GPU.

Together with electrons, muons are naturally produced powerful and penetrating particles that are discharged when Cosmic rays interact with the upper atmosphere. Muon attenuation has long been used to image the insides of the Egyptian pyramids as well as the Mayan pyramids.

The US government wants to use these particles to inspect cargo entering the USA’s borders against nuclear or radiological threats. The idea is to use banks of tube detectors placed strategically on either side of what is being transported to identify all of the signatures of the interaction of Muons and electrons with the materials inside the cargo containers.

This scanning technology was invented at Los Alamitos National Laboratory in 2006 and has been improved to the point of use in the field. This year, this new scanning method is being tested in the Bahamas with plans to expand it, if successful, to all ports of entry to the USA.

The challenge is to produce low-latency imaging very quickly as there are massive amounts of data to compute. Fortunately, the GPU is up to the challenge with a GTX 770 providing a 200X speedup compared to using a CPU platform.<a safer scan. Or it can possibly be used to scan huge objects like bridges or solid rocket boosters for defects.

You tax dollars at work. On to the next style="text-align: left;"> Three prestigious universities are working together in a program called “Computing the Cure”. As the costs for sequencing plunges, it is now possible to determine what genetic changes are occurring in tumor samples that cause the specific cancer. So it is now possible to prescribe target drugs to act on the errant biomolecules.

The problem is that the tumors develop resistance mutations and there are far too many rare mutations that complicate making useful therapeutic was quite a logistical feat to care for about 3,000 people but Nvidia was once again up to the task. The only issue with the GTC is that there is realistically too much to take in at once. No one could see all 600 sessions – that is way up over the 340 sessions of the 2012 GTC that we last attended. There were over 200 volunteers which made it possible. Our thanks to Nvidia for inviting ABT to the 2014 GTC.

Conclusion

On Thursday afternoon, we packed up early and headed for the San Francisco airport with a few other tech editors heading home to the USA East Coast and to England, taking our SHIELDs and our unique experiences with us. We said good-bye to our adventure at the 2014 GTC and we hope that we can return next year. It was an amazing experience as it is really an ongoing revolution that started as part of Nvidia’s vision for GPU programming just a few years ago. It is Nvidia’s disruptive revolution to make the GPU “all purpose” and at least as important as the CPU in computing. Over and over, their stated goal is to put the massively parallel processing capabilities of the GPU into the hands of smart people.

Here is our conclusion from the 2009 GTC

Nvidia gets a 9/10 for this conference; a solid “A” for what it was and is becoming and I am looking forward to GTC 2010! As a plea to them, make next year’s conference schedule less hectic and definitely make it longer. Kudos for not dumping us into San Jose rush hour traffic at 3 PM, as last year. This editor sees the GPU computing revolution as real and we welcome it!

Well, the GTC 2014 gets another ‘A’. Maybe an A+. Nvidia has made the conference larger but not any less hectic. Next year, attendees can look forward to another 4-day conference from April 28 through May 1, 2015 at the San Jose Convention Center.

Our hope for future GTCs is that Nvidia will make it “spectacular” like they did with Nvision08 – to bring the public awareness of GPU computing to the fore by again highlighting the video gaming side of what their GPUs can do, as well as diverse projects including the progress made in the medical field against dementia, and in automotive.

This was a relatively short and very personal report on the GTC. We have literally a hundred gigabytes of untapped information in raw video and hundreds of pictures and sessions that did not make it into this wrap-up. However, we shall continue to reflect back on the GTC on ABT Forum until the next one.

Mark Poppin

ABT Editor-in-Chief

This is the fourth time that ABT has been privileged to attend Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference (GTC).
