It is somewhat true but for every ten that sign up today, six will have abandon Twitter next week. So much for <strong>Dancing with the Stars!<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nOprah is undoubtedly a very nice lady.<\/p>\n<p>So (we assume) are Ashon Kutcher, Jason Calacanis, Justin Beiber, Shaq and millions of others.<\/p>\n<p>All of these people are climbing aboard Twitter so rapidly we\u2019re running low on Kool-Aid.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-24.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-42039\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-24.jpg?resize=356%2C386\" alt=\"Untitled-2\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-24.jpg?resize=356%2C386 356w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-24-138x150.jpg 138w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-24-276x300.jpg 276w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 356px) 100vw, 356px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em><strong>Hockey Stick<\/strong> \u2013 Looking an awful lot like most startups\u2019 growth\/sales projections, Twitter registrations have grown rapidly&#8211;both in the U.S. and around the globe. The only problem is that the growth in the number of drop-outs after a few weeks would appear to be just as bullish. It takes more than stars to keep people connecte<\/em>d.<\/p>\n<p>At first you would believe that we simply have to get closer to each other and that the old six-degrees of separation rule no longer applies.<\/p>\n<p>Tweeters can\u2018t be any further apart than 140 characters.<\/p>\n<p>They love to Tweet.<\/p>\n<p>They love to follow other Tweeters.<\/p>\n<p>But they don\u2019t really care if people follow their Tweets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-32.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-42040\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=321%2C343\" alt=\"Untitled-3\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=321%2C343 321w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-32-140x150.jpg 140w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-32-280x300.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 321px) 100vw, 321px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em><strong>So What?<\/strong> \u2013 It turns out that most people don\u2019t care if others on the iNet pay any attention to their Twitter activity or not. Rather like my Tweets are so Tweet!!!<\/em><br \/>\nSorta like\u2026I Tweet\u2026therefore I am!<\/p>\n<p>Twitter sends us little notes saying people are following our updates.<\/p>\n<p>All we have is an account.<\/p>\n<p>The anticipation of our first Tweet must be killing them !!!<\/p>\n<p>Folks claim there is a growing Twitter population. The problem is there is a constant turn of users.<\/p>\n<p>Month-to-month though, only about 40 percent stick around.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, with seven billion people on the planet and billions in the bank \u2026 they have time.<\/p>\n<p>Then too you have to wonder does the Pope do all his own Tweets, President Obama, President Putin\u2026<strong><em>naw!!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Pew Research, Twitter will grow to more than one billion by the end of this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-42.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-42041\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=490%2C425\" alt=\"Untitled-4\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=490%2C425 490w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-42-150x130.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-42-300x260.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em><strong>More Plus than Minus<\/strong> \u2013 While Twitter management hasn\u2019t yet figured out how to keep people active with their service, most still project aggressive growth. Now they have to determine how to begin making money. Of course, they still have roughly $55 million in the bank. That didn\u2019t work in the Web 1.0 period, but maybe this time it will succeed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Twitter received a lot of attention during the elections, the U.S. Air water landing and the takeover of the hotel in India.<\/p>\n<p>A growing number of companies such as SAP, Salesforce, Dell, Wal-Mart, Target and Nordstrom\u2019s have begun using the service to work more closely with their customers.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are Domino\u2019s Pizza, Amazon, McDonalds and others that found that the 140 characters can produce a mob mentality, complete with pitchforks and torches.<\/p>\n<p>Today, people can\u2019t seem to stand the vacuum of silence.<\/p>\n<p>Folks rush to take advantage of every personal and social networking tool available (our weapon of choice continues to be email).<\/p>\n<p><strong>My Playground<\/strong><br \/>\nUnlike most social networking tools, Twitter is a place where older users (35+) have their say.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42042\" style=\"width: 455px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-52.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42042\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42042\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-52.jpg?resize=445%2C323\" alt=\"Source \u2013 Neilson Research\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-52.jpg?resize=445%2C323 445w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-52-150x108.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-52-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 Neilson Research<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em><strong>Adult Playpen<\/strong> \u2013 Unlike so many of the social networking opportunities that exist, Twitter is populated mostly by adults. And they do.<\/em><br \/>\nFor people who want to get work done rather than chat at the world, services like Yammer are much better.<\/p>\n<p>They aren\u2019t as sexy, but you can work on a project or activity \u201cin house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leaving your egos at the door, you\u2019re able to exchange information, ideas and concepts in a virtual\/conversational manner.<\/p>\n<p>Yammer is much more efficient and effective than email because people can have near real-time conversations with fellow employees, consultants and suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>Groups set up their specific profile and group list and change it as teams\/projects change.<\/p>\n<p>The great thing is you can post to and check with your computer, tablet or phone.<\/p>\n<p>Heck, you can even add photos, documents and videos to keep business moving; and all of the work stays inside your firewall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Company Microblogs<\/strong><br \/>\nFirms like Cisco, HP, Dell, Xerox and other companies large and small have found that instant messaging is a valuable work tool.<\/p>\n<p>A countless number of companies around the globe have taken the Twitter plunge to talk with customers, sell products and improve customer support.<\/p>\n<p>Dell earned several million last year selling used equipment from their Tweet corner.<\/p>\n<p>FedEx, JetBlue, Virgin Airways and others &#8212; including Whole Foods Markets &#8212; have climbed aboard the microblog wagon because it is another\u2013ubercheap\u2013way to improve and enhance customer relations activities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42044\" style=\"width: 354px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-71.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42044\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42044\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=344%2C274\" alt=\"Source \u2013 Marketing Executives Networking Group (MENG)\" srcset=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-71.jpg?resize=344%2C274 344w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-71-150x119.jpg 150w, http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Untitled-71-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source \u2013 Marketing Executives Networking Group (MENG)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em><strong>Direct Touch<\/strong> \u2013 Customer-centric firms around the globe have quickly come to realize that social networking tools are the ideal way to quickly and cost-effectively support and engage customers. Many executives believe that direct contact establishes a stronger bond for the company.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, there are sound business practice reasons for having and using Twitter accounts.<\/p>\n<p>But following recent events the best reason seems to be \u2026 <em><strong>defense!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dominos was like a deer in the oncoming car headlights when a couple of really dumb employees posted their \u201cfilthy, rotten food\u201d video on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon had a \u201cmislocation\u201d of book titles.<\/p>\n<p>A wanna\u2019-be claimed he had hacked Amazon\u2019s system and eliminated the books (so much BS but\u2026). Amazon had to correct the programming error, show that they weren\u2019t prejudice to any sexual orientation and prove their system was still sound.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be Proactive, Not Reactive<\/strong><br \/>\nBoth firms had to work in a reactive rather than proactive mode because every area of social media is just too new and there is no past to base the present\/future on.<\/p>\n<p>In both instances, individuals were eager to claim their 15 minutes of righteous <em><strong>Fame!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The difference between them and the movie was the cost of entry was nothing but free time for the microbloggers. It didn\u2019t matter that in these instances (and similar \u201cconsumer guardian\u201d events that <em><strong>will<\/strong><\/em> occur) the stories were false.<\/p>\n<p>The Internet and Web 2.0 social networking tools have produced a mob mentality that feeds the monster bent on damaging individuals, companies, brands.<\/p>\n<p>People have no problem Tweeting again and again what they wouldn\u2019t say to you face to face (at least, we hope they wouldn\u2019t).<\/p>\n<p>In our net-driven world, companies don\u2019t have to make a wrong move or make a wrong decision to get people fanning the flames.<\/p>\n<p>As Mark Twain said, <em>\u201cA lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Damage Control<\/strong><br \/>\nAnd with the tools available today, you have to constantly worry that someone, somewhere is making an innocent or malicious statement and \u2026 <em><strong>BAM!!!!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As Andy Grove was fond of repeating, <em>\u201cOnly the paranoid survive.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Organizations that are involved in social media at least have a community foundation they can leverage to correct things as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Management won\u2019t know exactly when, where or why the \u201cchallenge\u201d will occur. But developing a plan of action while folks are lobbing Tweets is a helluva\u2019 strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Even with its huge user base churn, Twitter has attracted the introduction of a number of Tweet tools (we know, we made that up!).
