The arrival of ATI\u2019s HD4800 series meant that Nvidia\u2019s cards that offered similar performance for a higher cost had to come down in price, especially if they were to compete with ATI\u2019s renewed vigor in the discrete graphic card market after being dominated by Nvidia\u2019s 8 series for so long.<\/p>\n<p>To understand how we arrived here, we have to go back to 2006 when Nvidia and ATI, now a part of AMD, were both planning their first DirectX 10 parts. End of 2006 is approaching and Microsoft plans to launch its Windows Vista Operating System early next year, bringing DirectX10 along with it. Performance numbers show that older hardware is left in the dust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January 30, 2007<\/strong> \u2013 Microsoft launches Windows Vista. What could be more worse for ATI than a product launch that is 7 months late, and it doesn\u2019t even compete for the performance crown?\u00a0 In the video card world, 7 months is a long time, enough time for a company to tweak their already successful product and launch a new chip with a die\u00a0 shrink. R600 was an expensive chip for ATI to make due to their use of 512-bit memory bus. Never has the world seen such price\/performance ratio as this sub $260 card provided. Nvidia almost wipes out its own lineup in addition to ATI\u2019s with this card. A die shrink from 80nm to 65nm based on the G92 chip, this card provides the same or more performance than much more expensive-selling 8800GTS 640 and HD2900 XT.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/hd3870-34-m-png.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"HD3870_3-4_m\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/hd3870-34-m-thumb-png.png?resize=162%2C103\" border=\"0\" alt=\"HD3870_3-4_m\" align=\"right\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>November 14, 2007<\/strong> \u2013 Not to be outdone by Nvidia this time, ATI launches its own R600 refresh. RV670 is based on the 55nm\u00a0 manufacturing process. The die size is reduced from 408 sq.mm to 192 sq.mm. This is a major change in ATI\u2019s ideology as we shall see in the following text. ATI unveils HD3870 and HD3850 selling at attractive price points of $219 and $179 respectively. These price points make extreme sense as HD3870 offers about 85% performance of a 8800GT and costs about 85% of 8800GT too.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ffff;\">Things look to be improving for ATI as they start capturing back some share in the mainstream segment that was lost with R600<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/amd-3870x2-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"amd_3870X2\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/amd-3870x2-thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=142%2C98\" border=\"0\" alt=\"amd_3870X2\" align=\"right\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>January 29, 2008<\/strong> \u2013 ATI launches its dual GPU on a single PCB card called HD 3870X2. This card completes the major shift in ATI\u2019s ideology. They have now shifted\u00a0 from making a large monolithic chip to compete at the high end, to making smaller power-efficient chips for the mainstream while combining those smaller chips on the same PCB to make a single high-end part. These products continue ATI\u2019s ideology of <em>\u201cmultiply and conquer\u201d<\/em> introduced with the HD3800 series. HD 4850 priced at $199 and HD 4870 priced at $299 offer the same or more performance as almost $100 more Nvidia parts, 9800 GTX and GTX 260. Nvidia slashes prices on both the GTX 260 and GTX 280. GTX 280 drops from $649 to $499, and the GTX 260 from $399 to a more appealing $299. Users who bought these cards at original prices are given refunds by EVGA, XFX, BFG. Saying so would do injustice to ATI engineers who have put hard work into making the\u00a0 HD 4890. If you look closely at the table you will notice that the HD 4890 based on the RV790 chip has 3 million more transistors than HD 4870. One thing that the table does not reveal is that the die size of HD 4890 is 282 sq.mm as compared to HD4870\u2019s 260 sq.mm. So is the HD4890 more than a mere overclock on the HD4870 ? Lets see.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"hd4890 decap_ring\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/hd4890decap-ring-jpg.jpg?resize=550%2C287\" border=\"0\" alt=\"hd4890 decap_ring\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>HD 4890 was born with one thing in mind, higher clock rates.\u00a0 To achieve this, AMD has retimed the entire circuit inside the RV770 GPU, added a decap ring around the GPU which improves signal quality by lowering the parasitic noise. Due to increase in frequency, this noise has a considerable effect on the memory and GPU stability. The decap ring works by acting as a barrier that cuts down electromagnetic interference. The box clearly mentions that this is XOC version of the HD4890, although it fails to mention the frequencies on this overclocked version. The cover also labels that the card uses 1GB GDDR5 memory, a PCI Express slot and included adapters in the package. The cooler on HD 4870 was quiet but it was not able to keep the card cool enough. Often the temperatures reached in excess of 85C. The new reference cooler uses 3 heatpipes compared to 2 used on the HD 4870 cooler. This will help keep the temperatures down.
