Hard-disks won\u2019t increase game framerates but they can reduce game startup times and save\/load times, which means less time staring at progress bars and more time playing.<\/p>\n<p>The Raptor series from Western Digital is an attempt to introduce enterprise class hard-disk performance into the enthusiast segment by boasting, among other things, a 10,000 RPM spindle speed. To this day this feature is unique to Raptor drives and SCSI hard-disks are required to match or exceed this spindle speed.<\/p>\n<p>The Raptors have been upgraded several times over the years with larger capacities and better performance, but while this was happening, traditional 7200 RPM drives haven\u2019t been sitting still either. Increases in areal density, perpendicular recording and larger caches have ensured 7200 RPM drives have also seen performance improvements over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The question then becomes whether Raptor hard-disks are worth it given they typically have much smaller capacities and much higher cost per GB than 7200 RPM drives. There&#8217;s also the question of whether the 2800 RPM spindle speed advantage is offset by denser recording and platters.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up a 150 GB Raptor at launch and it served me well for about one year, but I was starting to run out of space for my games. That and my desire to reduce hard-disk count to reduce heat, noise and cable clutter in my case prompted me to search for one big drive as a replacement, and I finally settled on a Western Digital 750 GB Caviar Blue.<\/p>\n<p>In the past I&#8217;ve found interesting effects on game loading times as a result of hard-disk changes, so these two drives were perfect to test against each other. For the tests I picked an assortment of games known for long loading times to see how both drives handle real-world gaming. Each game was timed when loading a saved game.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--> <!--pagetitle:Setup & Methods--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">System<\/span> \u00a0<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (reference 2.4 GHz clock).<\/li>\n<li>4 GB DDR2-800 RAM (4 x 1 GB, dual-channel).<\/li>\n<li>Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 (Intel P965 chipset, F12 BIOS, latest chipset drivers).<\/li>\n<li>nVidia 8800 Ultra, nVidia reference clocks, Forceware 163.75.<\/li>\n<li>Windows XP SP2 Pro 32 bit.<\/li>\n<li>Western Digital Raptor 150 GB.<\/li>\n<li>Western Digital Caviar SE16 750 GB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Methods<\/span> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both drives were copies of each other (i.e. all of my games).<\/li>\n<li>Both drives were defragmented before testing.<\/li>\n<li>After testing one drive I rebooted the system to eliminate caching.<\/li>\n<li>The tests were taken by stop-watch from the time I hit \u201cload\u201d to when the game returned control to me.<\/li>\n<li>All results are in seconds, so lower scores are better.<\/li>\n<li>Allow a +\/- 1 second margin of error.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--nextpage--> <!--pagetitle:Results--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Results<\/strong> <\/span> <\/span> <br \/>\n \u00a0<br \/>\n Here are the results (in seconds) of each drive loading a saved game in each game. I tested each drive multiple times in those games to confirm the results. <em>Fear<\/em> seems to be extremely sensitive to disk performance and I have noticed this in past testing of hard-drives. Also <em>Stalker\u2019s<\/em> saved game loaded much quicker on the Caviar.<\/p>\n<p>The 150 GB Raptor was the performance king when it was introduced two years ago but clearly advances in 7200 RPM drive technology including perpendicular recording have erased that status, at least as far as these results go. The best part is that the Caviar is a lot quieter (especially when seeking), cooler, lighter plus it has fives times the storage capacity. Additionally it has a much lower cost per gigabyte too.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Conclusion<br \/>\n <\/span> <\/strong> <\/span> \u00a0<br \/>\n Realistically if you\u2019re looking for fast game loading times I suggest you consider the latest range of 7200 RPM drives as there are some excellent models with very large capacities and great performance.
