Their Antec 900 and 1200 cases have been loved and admired by many enthusiasts. Antec also makes quality power supplies. Based on their success with enthusiasts with the Antec 900 and 1200 cases, they are trying something different with the Skeleton. This case is more of a testbed station rather than a traditional case. To show you what I mean, have a look at the image below:

See why it is named Skeleton. Extreme cases incorporate these fans along with adding fans at the bottom, top and side.

This case throws the box away, and what you are left with is basically just your components out in the air with a giant fan on top. In addition to reducing the waste, this practice serves another purpose. Many people don’t tend to read the manual, thus they can be wasted money for the company. By not printing a manual, it allows Antec to save money and hopefully reduce the cost of the case somewhat.

The accessories ship in this little box. The component tray can be removed by loosening two thumb screws on the back side of the case. One of these is shown in the image above. Once the screws are removed, slide the tray out. The tray comes out to about three-fourth of its length. If you want to completely remove the tray from the case, you need to press down on the latch on the right side of tray (as shown in the image on the right above) and keep pulling the tray towards yourself. This procedure can be quite tedious to get used to at first, but keep at it and the tray will soon be out of the case.

Exterior or Interior ? continued…

The component tray features a motherboard tray on top which can be removed. The Zerotherm Nirvana is not able to fit in this case. The maximum clearance is about 125mm. So any cooler with a height less than this should fit, but since most tower coolers are 140-160mm in height, you will be out of luck with such coolers and the Antec Skeleton. This is a very serious issue that makes the use of an otherwise perfect case questionable with enthusiasts as most of the best performing coolers on the market use the tower style design.

I was able to solve this issue by using the Cooler Master Gemini II S cooler than blows air towards the motherboard.

Even though you won’t be able slide the tray back into the cage with a tower style cooler installed, you can use the tray itself as a testbed. See the above image on the right. Due to this, the main power cord connected to the power supply will be bent, and some of you might be uncomfortable with having it like that. As a result you will have to route the cord through one of the sides by taking the grill off and connecting it as shown below.

Another issue with this case is that there is very little clearance provided to the power supply on either side. There is not much room up or below the power supply, which means that the power supply may run hot in this case as the fan may not be able to intake sufficient air. I have no tests to prove this, but it would be nice to see the skeleton propped up about an inch from the base of the surface it is kept on.

Conclusion

With the Skeleton, Antec has tried to break out of the mold of traditional closed box-type computer cases and offer a product that brings the idea behind the enthusiast testbeds to mainstream consumers. For the most part, Antec succeeds in this endeavor. But there are some critical flaws in the Skeleton in its current form. If these flaws are ironed out in the next version of the Skeleton, I can easily see it becoming the darling of enthusiasts wishing to overclock their top of the line hardware to dizzying heights. Let’s recap some of the pros and cons of this case:

Pros

Open air design allows easy access to components

Top 250mm fan pushes a lot of air onto the motherboard, providing active cooling for memory and northbridge among other components on the motherboard

Cable clutter can be minimized by routing the cables under the motherboard

LEDs on the 250mm make a very beautiful lightshow at night

LEDs can be turned off

The motherboard can be removed from the case and used as a testbed

Cons

Cannot use any tower style cooler greater than 125mm in height. This means that the leading air coolers on the market like Prolimatech Megahalems, TRUE, Tuniq Tower cannot be used in this case.

Power Supply may run hot due to little space above and below it, which may restrict the air intake of the power supply fan

Only 2 hard drives can be used inside the case. Any additional hard drives are hung from the sides of the case which leaves them without any active cooling, which could lead to them possibly running hotter than the hard drives inside the case.

Even though not being able to use tower style coolers in this case may be a big turn off for many enthusiasts, I would still like to award this case AlienBabelTech’s Innovation award, because that is what Antec has done with this case. They have dared to be different and “Think Beyond the BOX”.

[7814,6,7
1168,20,1774,1171,1505,1773
post-9220","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-articles","category-news","category-technology","tag-antec","tag-case","tag-computer-case","tag-enclosure","tag-hardware","tag-skeleton
["GET
