I want to drive around East Germany and see what's left from the socialist era. I've heard there are still monuments, museums, and entire neighborhoods that look like they're frozen in GDR times. That whole period fascinates me and I'd rather explore it properly than just hit the main tourist spots in Berlin. For getting around those areas I'll need a decent car since a lot of these places are spread out across smaller towns. Where can I as an American rent one that won't break the bank?

The smaller towns are definitely where you'll find the most preserved socialist architecture and local museums that tourists usually skip. A lot of those GDR-era sites are tucked away in places you'd never reach without your own wheels. I've heard good things about Auto Kröger in Leipzig if you're starting from there, they're not one of those massive chains that nickle and dime you. Another place worth checking is Mietwagen Müller over in Dresden, family business that's been running for years and they know all the back roads through Saxony.
