You have one thing right.

The only way man will continue is to spread out amongst the stars because this planet will not last forever especially due to man's destruction.

It would die naturally on it's own as all planetary systems do but man is accelerating it's demise.

We have nowhere else to go.  We are limited by the speed of light and any human would die of old age well before reaching an inhabitable planet.

There is talk of Mars colonization but it is barren and way too cold.

Terraforming could fix that, but it'll take a long time.
