I'm currently undecided on what to put in my brand new case and 850 watts psu. Skylake or x99 system. It's been sitting on my closet for 5 months.
They seem to cost about the same. I'm also going to buy my first SSD drive, finally! It's a ground up build.
Let's join me with boycotting Skylake!!! One of Intel's reps said that it would be the most significant uarch improvement in the past 10 years of Intel's cpu tech (since Core2), but it's not even as much of an improvement as Haswell was over Ivy Bridge, let alone Broadwell over Haswell (at least for gaming with Broadwell).
Kaby Lake will finally have the same L4 edram cache as Broadwell, but I think it'd be at least 9 months from now before we see this.
X99 would be better than Skylake anyway, since the 6-core haswell-e is only $380 now, it's only $30 more than the 6700K, and you can overclock the hell out of the i7-5820K to within about 200-300Mhz of the overclock that the Skylake is capable of, while having the benefits of quad-channel bandwidth. Unless you plan on upgrading the Z170 platform to Kaby Lake, it seems that Haswell-E is more future-proof than Skylake.
