Rollo do you not realize how low the Canadian dollar has dropped? It costs $1.40cad to buy 1 us dollar now. That is the issue. Once you factor in the currency the deals are comparable and often much better here in Canada.
As for the brown ice, my old sharp did that in warm mode as well. It messes up the white balance. Perhaps you don't watch hockey.
