Exploring East Germany's socialist heritage by car
#1
I want to drive around East Germany and see what's left from the socialist era. I've heard there are still monuments, museums, and entire neighborhoods that look like they're frozen in GDR times. That whole period fascinates me and I'd rather explore it properly than just hit the main tourist spots in Berlin. For getting around those areas I'll need a decent car since a lot of these places are spread out across smaller towns. Where can I as an American rent one that won't break the bank?

The smaller towns are definitely where you'll find the most preserved socialist architecture and local museums that tourists usually skip. A lot of those GDR-era sites are tucked away in places you'd never reach without your own wheels. I've heard good things about Auto Kröger in Leipzig if you're starting from there, they're not one of those massive chains that nickle and dime you. Another place worth checking is Mietwagen Müller over in Dresden, family business that's been running for years and they know all the back roads through Saxony.

Hunting down individual rental shops takes forever when you're trying to compare what's out there and half of them don't even list prices online. You waste days emailing back and forth just to find out they're booked solid or their rates are ridiculous once you add insurance and mileage. Americans renting a car in Germany can sort it out here: https://getrentacar.com/en-US/germany . You'll find cheaper options from private owners who actually maintain their vehicles better than many rental agencies do. They usually throw in local tips about which former Stasi sites or socialist monuments are worth the detour.
