Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition upgraded from “Fair” to “3D Vision Ready” with Beta drivers 280.19
With the release of updated GeForce/3D Vision drivers last week (beta drivers version R280.19), the recently introduced Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition has been upgraded from “fair” to a “3D Vision Ready” rating – meaning that every parry, punch, jab, charge, and super move now works perfectly in stereoscopic 3D (S3D).
Street Fighter IV has been on Steam for quite awhile although PC gamers never got to play the Super version which featured extra characters and moves even though it hit consoles last year. With the release of the Arcade Edition in June, PC gamers got all the extra console content with new characters, balance tweaks and improved community features. This editor has never been into fighting games, but it may change with this game. However, from playing a few matches against the CPU, it appears that a controller may be in order for this editor. It also appears that you have to have a very sturdy keyboard to work all of the combos successfully.
Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition features four new fighters and now includes all the characters we missed out on from Super Street Fighter IV which brings the number of unique competitors up to 39. When Nvidia offered us a Steam key, we jumped at the chance to audition it with 3D Vision.
As with the rest of the Street Fighter series, it features 3D backgrounds with characters played on a 2D plane. It has been developed particularly with S3D (stereoscopic 3D) in mind as a 3D Version has been developed just for the Nintendo 3DS. Unfortunately, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition was only rated as “Fair” for Nvidia’s 3D Vision. That means that you had to dial some settings down and even with the latest WHQL 275.50 drivers, it is better to play in regular 2D.
However, everything all changed for the better with the latest betas from Nvidia’s 3D Vision driver team, R280.19. Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition is now rated at the highest level of compatibility with S3D – 3D Vision Ready. That means that you can now crank up the settings to the absolute maximum if your card can handle it.
Wow! What a difference a driver makes. Now you can max every setting including some really off-the-wall C16xQ setting in 3D and have the framerates completely locked at 60FPS (by the 3D Vision driver). We played with a GTX 580 and it appears that a GTX 560 can also max out this game.
With the new drivers, the 3D instantly became compelling. Fortunately, only the special kill combos actually popped out of the screen – like a punch heading toward your own head! All of the rest of the action stays within the screen and the 3D effects are awesome.
The above and below screenshots are from the built-in benchmarks:
You have 39 characters to choose from and you can play against the PC or against friends, online, or if you are extremely lazy, just watch it play itself.
We have to say that we are very impressed with this game in 3D Vision with the latest driver. Please stay tuned for our forthcoming Mega-3D Vision/Surround review. This editor has spent 4 months evaluating 3D Vision with over 80 PC games – including playing six games from start to finish with it! We have already reviewed Alice: Madness Returns and Duke Nukem Forever and you can expect far more S3D details about Crysis 2, Dungeon Siege III and Super Street Fighter IV in the Mega 3D Vision review coming this week.
