Batman Game of the Year edition supports in-game Anti-Aliasing (MSAA) for Radeons
We polled our own forum and did a bit of quick checking around when we realized that Batman: Arkham Asylum “Game of the Year” (GotY) edition supports in-game anti-aliasing (MSAA) for Radeons. Evidently this isn’t generally known nor has it been tested widely. So, we plan to remedy this in a future short ABT article reviewing the game.
This added in-game MSAA support for Radeons came to our attention after we published our Introducing Galaxy’s GTS 450 SuperOverclock review and especially page 19 that benchmarked Batman: Arkham Asylum. As we pointed out, Batman: Arkham Asylum uses a highly modified version of the Unreal Engine 3 that does not support AA natively but must be added in and supported by the game’s developer.
Unfortunately we cannot compare Batman: Arkham Asylum using our GeForce exactly against the Radeon with AA enabled on both cards – on the regular game. The reason is that we need to set anti-aliasing in the ATI control panel to use it at all with our AMD Radeon video cards. Of course, if we do that, we will get a higher performance penalty with this “brute force” AA enhancement than we will with a comparable Nvidia video card as the GeForce is optimized to run with AA in-game by the developer.
However, AMD’s own press deck for HD 5770 points this out:
Batman Arkham Asylum debuted on PC in September of 2009 and received favorable reviews. Following up on that success, a “Game of the Year Edition” version of the game was released in early 2010. This version of the game added new maps and built-in support for multi-sample anti-aliasing (MSAA) with ATI Radeon products.
Here is the claim from their own testing:
Fifteen percent performance improvement is a big deal and we find this pretty interesting so we plan to test this out for ourselves when we acquire a “Game of the Year Edition” of Batman: Arkham Asylum. We will then move it from speculation into “tested” and in future we will only use the GotY edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum for benching. We also are going to be testing Eyefinity vs. Surround shortly; we have a massive article coming up on HD 5870 architecture including CrossFire scaling, and we will keep you continually updated on the ever-changing graphics front.
Happy gaming!
