Nvidia announces new PhysX titles
In order to counter AMD/ATI’s HD 4770 launch Nvidia didn’t launch a product this time, but they did announce new titles based on their PhysX Technology they acquired when they bought Ageia.
The first title announced today is Capcom’s Dark Void. Dark Void is an upcoming science fiction action adventure that combines aerial and ground-pounding combat for a thrilling third-person shooter experience. According to Nvidia, Dark Void will be the first to use dynamic, accurate smoke effects and smoke trails for the game’s innovative jetpack, UFOs, and spaceships, all of which will be hardware-accelerated by GeForce GPUs when played on compatible desktop PCs. The game is expected to ship in fall 2009.
Second announcement of the day was 8monkey Labs’ historically-based first-person shooter Darkest of Days where gamers will travel back and forth in time to experience some of history’s “darkest days” and fight through some of the most epic battles in history. Although no specific PhysX effects have been announced, it will be an interesting game for gamers who are used to enjoying games like the Call of Duty series.
Third announcement came in the form of GRIN’s upcoming third-person shooter, Terminator Salvation. The game is said to use PhysX effects for weapon effects and destructible environments.
Finally, NVIDIA also announced that SEGA has licensed NVIDIA’s PhysX for use in their development studios worldwide. “Sega has been using PhysX technology for several years, but this new agreement enables our studios to take advantage of the full portfolio of cross-platform PhysX engines,” said Takashi Shoji, Department Manager, Consumer Software R & D Support Dept., Consumer R&D Division, SEGA Corporation. “APEX was an important factor in our decision because it enables us to create high quality physics content in an easier and more productive manner.”
