Core i7 920 and 940 to get axed
Intel’s upcoming Lynnfield CPUs perform too close to the current lower end Core i7 CPU 920. Intel, in a move to not cannibalize the sale of 920, plans to phase out Core i7 920 and 940. This would make way for higher priced soon to be released Core i7 950 CPU.
According to sources at Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, due to the performance of Lynnfield CPUs Intel plans to move the X58 chipset platform to just the high-end, workstation and SMP boards. The sources also indicated that the Core i7 950 CPU will also be axed down the line making way for another CPU.
