iPhone 5C : What we know so far
For almost a year, we have heard that Apple was working on a budget iPhone made of cheaper materials. Over the past few weeks, leaked parts and pictures have surfaced of a so-called iPhone 5C. The picture shown above, from a tech site called weiphone.com, makes all the leaks seem more believable.
Most likely, Apple is developing and will indeed have a new device called the iPhone 5C to go along with the possible iPhone 5S/6 and iOS 7.
What we know so far:
Most of the leaks we have seen suggest that the device will come in different colors. We are not sure what variety of colors will be available, but they seem to be ranging from white, yellow, a reddish orange, blue, and green. These colors are shown in a leaked photo from AppleInsider below.
We have yet to see the standard black iPhone color.
The leaked photo below from Gizmodo shows the iPhone 5c in retail packaging which makes us believe that this device truly exists.
Apple is also rumored to be using cheaper materials to make the iPhone 5C. The iPhone 5C is rumored to be sporting a plastic back cover similar to the 3GS instead of aluminum, and the internal hardware will possibly be less powerful than the iPhone 5S.
Our guess would be that Apple would use the iPhone 5’s internals but leave out the 8MP camera, retina display, and use a plastic back in order to cut costs.
The most recent leak actually shows an 8MP sensor, but we do not know if this is going to be used in the “budget” iPhone 5C.
A source close to TechnoBuffalo.com has also confirmed that the C in iPhone 5C will stand for “color”. This coincides with all the other leaked photos and colored casings.
The serious question is whether Apple will remove the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4s. It is typical of Apple to drop the price of its two older models when a new iPhone handset comes out, so we are somewhat confused as to why a “budget” iPhone would even exist.
It will be interesting to see pricing, what happens to older devices, and how this new iPhone type will do in the marketplace.
Our final thoughts:
Lets go over exactly what we covered: as of now Apple is making a “budget” device called iPhone 5c, it will come it multiple of colors, the internals specs are unclear, but it will have a plastic back case.
There is no news yet of what will consist of the iPhone 5c display and camera, but knowing how Apple cares about hardware and features, we do not think there will be any issues.
Our guess on pricing, it is possible Apple will remove the iPhone 5 and 4s and retail the iPhone 5C at the mid-range $350 full retail and $99 on a new 2-year contract. Expect an Autumn launch along with the awaited iPhone 5S.
