Micron enters video card memory business
Third largest DRAM maker in the world, Micron, has decided to enter the world of making graphics memory. Micron will have to compete with established competitors such as Samsung and Hynix.
"Our upcoming 50-nanometer technology is very competitive when it comes to power consumption and performance," said Robert Feurle, Micron’s VP of DRAM marketing. "I think it’s a good point in time to begin discussions with big enablers Nvidia and AMD and get started with some design-ins," Feurle said.
Micron plans to target “upper mid-range” graphics card segment starting off with 1600 MHz Double Date Rate 3 (DDR3) memory. This is the same type of the memory which is referred to as RAM and is the main memory of PCs. Micron believes that its 1.35V DDR3 has a distinct power consumption advantage over 1.8V GDDR3.
