Nvidia brings GDDR5 compatibility with GT 240
In case you have been a little saddened by delays in Fermi production, and lack of something new by Nvidia. Cheer up today, that is if you like old tech mixed with something new. The GT 240 launched today are not exactly new cards, but they bring support for GDDR5 memory. Boasting of 96 stream processors (oops, forgot they are called CUDA cores now) this is the same crippled G92 core used in the old 8800 GS except that the memory interface is now 128-bit instead of 192-bit in the old 8800 GS. As ATI showed that 128-bit memory interface coupled with GDDR5 memory can offer some great performance, the GT 240 flavor that comes with GDDR5 memory should offer good performance. The other GDDR3 flavored GT240s should offer somewhat of a lesser performance than the old 8800 GS due to decrease in memory interface.
We will see the performance soon, as our retail review sample from Galaxy arrives soon.
Here are the cards released today
Galaxy is out with three models of the GT 240 namely the D3 512MB, D3 1GB and D5 1GB.
