Peacekeeper – Futuremark’s Browser Benchmark
The browser war rages on and the long-time benchmark stalwart, Futuremark, has stepped up and made a benchmark with which to either fuel or dispel the ongoing war. Peacekeeper, is what its called and that is in honour of the browser wars…and yes, the name was deliberate.
This benchmark is quite efficient and measures a browser’s performance by testing its JavaScript functionality. JavaScript is a widely used programming language that is used to create many features such as animation, navigation, forms and other common web applications. Peacekeeper serves to deliver a good comparison, for all interested persons, of the different browsers available to them.
The tests includes the following:
- Array Suite
- arrayCombined
- arrayWeighted
- DOM Suite
- domGetElements
- domDynamicCreationCreateElement
- domDynamicCreationInnerHTML
- domJQueryAttributeFilters
- domJQueryBasicFilters
- domJQueryBasics
- domJQueryContentFilters
- domJQueryHierarchy
- String Suite
- stringChat
- stringDetectBrowser
- stringFilter
- stringValidateForm
- stringWeighted
- Render Suite
- renderChart
- renderGrid
- renderPhotoZoom
- renderAlpha
- renderPhysics
- Community
- community01Encrypt
- community02ParseXML
- community03Filter
- community04Sort
- community05Scroll
That’s quite a bit of stuff. For those that don’t care about the technical aspects of it all, it is senseless/needless jargon. You just want a browser that works for you, right? Well, more information can be found by reading the Peacekeeper FAQ on Futuremark’s website.
In terms of requirements though, Peacekeeper will work with any recent browser. The only strict requirement is that the browser must have the Java-Plug-in installed.
Quick Bench
This whole item of news really got me interested, and in typical ABT style, I had to do a quick bench. A single run of the Peacekeeper benchmark with 5 browsers gave me the following results.
The format displayed is: Browser (version number) – score.
- Chrome (1.0.154.48) – 1621
- Safari (4.0) – 1610
- Opera (9.63) – 715
- Firefox (3.0.7) – 597
- Internet Explorer (7) – 252
Google Chrome tops the list while it might not be the same for you. Feel free to test your own browsers and/or discuss this topic with us in this thread.
