The third part jumped ahead to <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=10085\">the benchmarks<\/a>, comparing our new value PC\u2019s AMD Athlon II X2 and Phenom II X2\/X3 platform verses the much more expensive Intel Core2Quad setup.<\/p>\n<p>However, as important as saving money on hardware is, this editor believes that the choice of a power supply (PSU) is critical to any PC build. The PSU should never be cheap or generic. Too much depends on it to go bargain bin or generic hunting. I would recommend that you instead look for sales and perhaps even rebates to save money.\u00a0 At the time of writing this article, Cooler Master\u2019s Silent Pro 600 M has been on sale at NewEgg.com for the last few weeks for only $79.99 with free shipping!\u00a0 That is $40 off the regular price.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171036\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171036', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171036']);\" title=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171036\">http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171036<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You also need to remember that a quality PSU will likely last through several builds if you plan ahead. Another thing to consider is \u201cnoise\u201d \u2013 ideally you do not want your power supply\u2019s cooling fan adding <em>any<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>We are not out of order by insisting on Cooler Master\u2019s Silent Pro 600 M.\u00a0 We are helping to get the word out that generic and cheap power supplies waste lot of electricity and thus your money.\u00a0 They also hurt your wallet by producing excess heat and costing you more electricity per month in cooling your room.\u00a0 Even worse, a cheap PSU may not provide stable power for your PC components and will perhaps even shorten their life; and they will certainly limit your overclocking potential.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_box-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"PSU_600_box\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_box_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C207\" border=\"0\" alt=\"PSU_600_box\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although we are planning a budget build, we have planned for at least a HD 4870-X2 or HD 4870 CrossFire and we require absolute stability from our power supply unit. It is rated for a total of 600 watts at 85% (plus) percent efficiency.\u00a0\u00a0 It is rated by a company,\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.80plus.org\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.80plus.org\/', '80 Plus']);\" >80 Plus<\/a>\u201d which tests (for a fee) power supplies from many vendors to certify that the submitted PSUs are actually over 80% efficient at 20%, 50% and 100% loads as claimed. 80 Plus has expanded their testing to include bronze (82%), silver (85%) and gold (87%) certifications for power supplies.\u00a0 The Silent Pro series at 85% efficiency by Cooler Master is rated only 2% lower in efficiency than their Ultimate series.<\/p>\n<p>Efficiency is the ratio between the useful output of a PSU and the input. For example, if your computer actually uses 600W but draws 800W from the outlet, then the PSU\u2019s efficiency is 600W\/800W, or 75%.\u00a0 It also means in this example, that 200W of AC power is not converted into DC and is wasted, usually in the form of extra heat dumped into your room.\u00a0 Older or generic computer PSUs are typically 75% or less efficient.<\/p>\n<p>The more efficient your power supply is, the less your computer will waste power. Since any AC power that isn\u2019t converted into DC is exhausted as heat into your room, a more efficient power supply unit will run cooler and your air conditioner will also not have have to work as hard.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the 135 MM fan used to cool the Silent Pro 600M. Because of the excellent efficiency of the PSU, it allows Cooler Master to use a slower and quieter fan to cool it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/bigfan-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"BigFan\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/bigfan_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C240\" border=\"0\" alt=\"BigFan\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s now look at the cable and the installation of our Silent Pro 600 M.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Specs and packaging--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Options for installing the power supply and cables<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cooler Master\u2019s Silent Pro 600 M is installed with silicone rubber fittings on the sides to keep it from conducting vibrations to the case and it really works to keep noise down. This is an extraordinarily quiet PSU with an almost silent 800 RPM 135 MM variable speed fan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_install_dustf1-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"PSU_600_install_DustF1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_install_dustf1_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C184\" border=\"0\" alt=\"PSU_600_install_DustF1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We note that the PSU can be installed so that the intake fan can be up or down. There are advantages and disadvantages either way. We have dropped screws inside the PSU when the fan faced up. As a tip, cover your open PSU with a cloth when you are adding a video card, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Notice the silicone pads that we slightly pulled away on the right to show it better.\u00a0 The insulation is installed on both sides of the power supply unit and it helps to isolate any vibration and dampen noise as well as to keep your PSU (and case interior if it is painted) from being scratched<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_pcie-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"PSU_600_PCIe\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_pcie_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C153\" border=\"0\" alt=\"PSU_600_PCIe\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If the fan is down, it draws air in from below the bottom of the case and exhausts it out the back of the PSU \u2013 outside of the case airflow completely. If the fan is facing up, it draws warm air from inside your PC and exhausts it out through the PSU back grille. We used the Gladiator 600\u2019s supplied dust filter only with the PS fan facing downward.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_dustfinst-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"PSU_600_DustFinst\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_dustfinst_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C224\" border=\"0\" alt=\"PSU_600_DustFinst\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Facing downward with the fan drawing air in, the screen does not allow the PSU to become clogged with dust; however to keep the PS cool and with good air flow, the dust filter itself may need to be cleaned \u2013 especially if you are in a dusty environment. Simply place the dust filter in the case clips and you will now protect your power supply unit from choking with dust drawn in from beneath your case.\u00a0 If the dust filter starts to clog with dust, simply tip your PC on its side and vacuum the dust away.\u00a0 You can also use a brush to loosen the dust, if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Note the honeycomb design (image below) at the back to allow a free flow of air to cool your power supply unit\u2019s internal components.\u00a0 If your case is extraordinarily hot, consider turning the PSU over and drawing cool air in from below the case (in modern case setups where the PSU is on the bottom of the case).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_hc_back-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"PSU_600_5v_GTX_GTX\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_5v_gtx_gtx_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C231\" border=\"0\" alt=\"PSU_600_5v_GTX_GTX\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, it is rock solid and there is plenty of room for more wattage draw.\u00a0 The Cooler Master Silent Power Pro 600 M can clearly handle two demanding video cards in SLi or CrossFire.\u00a0 But what if we push it further?\u00a0 What if we use our HD 4870-X2 and our HD4870\/1GB in Tri-Fire-X3?\u00a0 As you can see from the following screen image, we did just that.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/psu_600_cfx_trifire-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"PSU_600_CFX_TriFire\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/psu_600_cfx_trifire_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C228\" border=\"0\" alt=\"PSU_600_CFX_TriFire\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Big surprise! Our Silent Pro 600 M can handle HD 4870-X3 Tri-Fire!\u00a0 Under extreme load, the system pulled over 560W continuously right on up to blipping just over 600w at its peak and our Silent Pro 600 M PSU did not shut down or become unstable \u2013 our Phenom II 720 X3 overclocked to 3.5GHz remained 100% stable.<\/p>\n<p>Considering that the temperature in the test room was a constant 76F during the testing and the Silent Pro PSU is rated for 85% efficiency at 600W at a much colder temp; and the PSU did not shut down or become unstable, one would say that it acts more like a decent 700W PSU. Cooler Master has become very conservative in its ratings.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the standards:    <br \/>\n <strong>3.3V<\/strong>, 3.125 to 3.465\u00a0 <br \/>\n <strong>5V<\/strong>, 4.75 to 5.25     <br \/>\n <strong>12V<\/strong>, 11.4 to 12.6<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few shots of my digital multimeter and Kill-a-Watt together measuring each rail \u2013 these are the most extreme variances that I could find and they are well within specifications.\u00a0 Here is the 3.3V rail:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_3v_trifire-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"PSU_600_3v_TriFire\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_3v_trifire_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C179\" border=\"0\" alt=\"PSU_600_3v_TriFire\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now the 5V rail:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_5v_trifire-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"PSU_600_5v_TriFire\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_5v_trifire_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C175\" border=\"0\" alt=\"PSU_600_5v_TriFire\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>. . . and finally the 12V rail:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_12v_trifire-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"PSU_600_12v_TriFire\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/psu_600_12v_trifire_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C160\" border=\"0\" alt=\"PSU_600_12v_TriFire\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 3.3v rail was dead on most of the time.\u00a0 Plus or minus .1V and no other variance at any wattage that we could give it.   <br \/>\n The 5V rail was very close &#8211; 4.97 to 5.09V     <br \/>\n The 12v rail measured from 11.68 to 12V<\/p>\n<p>And here is the result running 3DMark06 with Phenom II 720 at 3.5 GHz and HD 4870-X3 TriFire:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/psu_600_vantage_13823-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"PSU_600_Vantage_13823\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/psu_600_vantage_13823_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C154\" border=\"0\" alt=\"PSU_600_Vantage_13823\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Amazingly we see our Silent Power 600 M acting much more like a conservatively rated 700W PSU instead of the 600W it is rated at.\u00a0 Very impressive! So let\u2019s take it apart to perhaps see why.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: The Test--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Inside the Silent Pro 600 M \u2013 the components<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is relatively easy to disassemble the Silent Power PSU.\u00a0 Just a screwdriver will get it completely apart and void your 5-year warranty with Cooler Master.\u00a0 We voided ours so you won\u2019t have to wonder what is inside.\u00a0 As you can see, the panel is just glued on and you can pry it off to get to the screws that hold on the heatsinks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/backplateoff-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"backplateoff\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/backplateoff_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C136\" border=\"0\" alt=\"backplateoff\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look closely at the 135 MM fan used to cool this PSU.\u00a0 It is by Young Lin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fan_younglin-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"fan_younglin\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/fan_younglin_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=142%2C244\" border=\"0\" alt=\"fan_younglin\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is the copper that you can see in the next two shots that transfers heat so well and helps to cool the Silent Pro 600 M.\u00a0 In the first shot, you can see the two Japanese capacitors that are advertised on the box.\u00a0 Two will help insure the power supply remains stable under heavy load.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/capacitor_cu-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"copper_AL\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/copper_al_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C160\" border=\"0\" alt=\"copper_AL\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cooler Master has built a solid power supply unit that you can depend on from what we can see and from what we have tested.\u00a0 Lets wrap it up.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Inside the Silent Pro--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>The Conclusion<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We are very impressed with Cooler Master\u2019s Silent Pro 600 M PSU.\u00a0 It does more than it is advertised to do and we have been testing it under the most severe gaming conditions for well over a month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Pros:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A very good looking conservative and very silent and stable underrated PSU for a great price!<\/li>\n<li>85% plus efficiency results in a PSU that can be cooled quietly by a large nearly silent fan even at extreme load.<\/li>\n<li>Flat cabling allows for better airflow; modular design allows you to use only the cables you need<\/li>\n<li>Well-built PSU insures stable power past its rating <\/li>\n<li>5-year warranty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Cons:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimal instructions and badly translated English<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We feel a big thumbs-up is in order for Cooler Master\u2019s Silent Pro 600 M !\u00a0 It is well deserving of our &#8220;Great value&#8221;
