Intel, the world\u2019s biggest chip maker has been working for many years on Larrabee, a chip with dozens of cores for processing graphics. It was Intel\u2019s second major effort to break into high-end graphics so as to compete directly with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.nvidia.com', 'NVIDIA']);\" >NVIDIA<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amd.com\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.amd.com\/', 'AMD']);\" >AMD<\/a>\u2019s ATi.\u00a0 Today, Intel has officially canceled the consumer version of Larrabee, as first reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.semiaccurate.com\/2009\/12\/04\/intel-kills-consumer-larrabee-focuses-future-variants\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.semiaccurate.com\/2009\/12\/04\/intel-kills-consumer-larrabee-focuses-future-variants\/', 'SemiAccurate']);\" >SemiAccurate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLarrabee silicon and software development are behind where we had hoped to be at this point in the project,\u201d according to Nick Knuppfler, Intel&#8217;s spokesman. \u201cLarrabee will not be a consumer product.\u201d\u00a0 However, it is not totally dead.\u00a0 But it is so far behind and evidently so under-performing for consumer graphics that it will go back to R&amp;D so that Intel can continue to work on stand-alone graphics designs.<\/p>\n<p>Larrabee will instead be used as a software development platform for internal and external use. Larrabee was originally expected to appear in 2008 and was intended to compete with discrete graphics chips from NVIDIA and ATI.\u00a0 Intel would not give a projected date for the Larrabee software development kit and is only saying that we will hear more about it next year.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d love to hear your opinion.
