I just wanted to start off by showing you some of the procedures I will be going through for subsequent reviews.<\/p>\n<p>As many of you probably saw, I posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/abt\/viewtopic.php?f=44&amp;t=20587\" target=\"_blank\">thread<\/a> hoping for a discussion on how you determine system stability and how you achieve that stability.<\/p>\n<p>As we are hardware enthusiasts, we tend to have high end systems on which we depend on for our uses. I personally believe the days of the \u201caverage Joe\u201d computer user are over. Sure we all have a computer of some sorts, but for us enthusiasts, a computer is not an OEM box with proprietary parts and a locked BIOS.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to discuss my thoughts about what a \u201cstable\u201d CPU means.<\/p>\n<p>We all can agree that a stable computer is one that boots up, and can run whatever you throw at it without a hiccup. It\u2019s understandable that there are flaws in operating system designs that may require (in)frequent reboots. Other than that, it\u2019s a pretty subjective statement. You may be able to play a specific game at a certain frequency, but with another game \u2013 it fails.<\/p>\n<p>My personal definition is this:<\/p>\n<p>My computer must boot and provide a <strong>reliable and expected<\/strong> performance. It should never Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) or hard lock based on high loads. I should never have to down clock my CPU to play a game or do some benchmarking. Finally, which I believe is the most important; the computer should never have to throttle because of heat.<\/p>\n<p>The last point is highly debatable, and rarely seen. Your computer will probably not BSOD due to throttling, but is it limiting performance and thus conflicts with my definition of stability. The reason why thermal throttling is rarely seen is because it is a by-product of extreme temperatures. These temperatures come from poor CPU coolers, including the stock cooler. As it\u2019s been pointed out many times before \u2013 stock heat sink fan combos from a retail processor are never ideal. The reason why I wanted to add this little known fact in is shown here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/1-jpg.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" title=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/1_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=400%2C195\" border=\"0\" alt=\"1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The effective clock should be 145&#215;22=3190MHz, but instead I was being downclocked to 2169MHz. I understand that when you\u2019re processing a task that doesn\u2019t fully utilize all cores at 100% the overclock will be \u201cstable,\u201d but we\u2019re not talking about situational stability. We\u2019re talking about <strong>complete stability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle:Introduction--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle:Test System, Methodology &#038; Programs--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The System<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The system that I will be using for this review will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I7-930 D0<\/li>\n<li>Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5<\/li>\n<li>3x2GB OCZ DDR3 &#8211; 1066 @ 7-7-7-16 timings<\/li>\n<li>EVGA GTX 260c216<\/li>\n<li>Raid 0 on 2x150gb Raptors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Test<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I will be testing 3 programs that stress the CPU to maximum loads in order to test for stability. I will be using various monitoring programs to output results. The idea is that I\u2019m trying to prove if any one program is \u201cbetter\u201d than the others. If stress program A runs for 10 hours, but program B fails after 10 minutes, it may be beneficial to use program B to quickly test for failures.<\/p>\n<p>I initially ran into many problems created by the stock i7 cooler provided by Intel. Just as I had thought all hope was lost, UPS decided to stop by and give me some motivation. Meet the Swiftech Apogee XT:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; \"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/sam_0023.PNG\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18073 aligncenter\" title=\"SAM_0023\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/sam_0023.PNG?resize=360%2C480\" alt=\"SAM_0023\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/sam_0023.PNG 700w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/sam_0023-225x300.PNG 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This should prove to be useful for the massive amount of heat generated by the i7 930.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Meet the Programs<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mersenne.org\/various\/works.php\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.mersenne.org\/various\/works.php', 'Prime95']);\" target=\"_blank\">Prime95<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prime95 stresses CPUs by attempting to solve for prime numbers. You can read up on the theory behind the program via the above link. This program does support testing each thread with only one client.<\/p>\n<p>For Prime95, if a CPU passes 24 hours without failure, it\u2019s assumed to be completely stable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocbase.com\/perestroika_en\/index.php\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.ocbase.com\/perestroika_en\/index.php', 'OCCT']);\" target=\"_blank\">OCCT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t personally know too much about OCCT. In fact, I\u2019ve never actually used it. It has the best graphic interface of all the programs listed here along with built-in monitoring and auto termination temperatures. OCCT is said to be much more sensitive to failures.<\/p>\n<p>OCCT will be used in auto and custom mode.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xtremesystems.org\/forums\/showthread.php?t=197835\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.xtremesystems.org\/forums\/showthread.php?t=197835', 'Intel Burn Test']);\" target=\"_blank\">Intel Burn Test<\/a><br \/>\nIntel Burn Test is my personal favorite. I\u2019ve never tested it on an AMD CPU, but it states compatibility. The test uses Intel\u2019s own Linpack testing. It states that it can provide load temperatures up to 22C higher than Prime95. The reason why I love this test is because it also provides a benchmark along with a stress test. Each run is reported and given the time that it took to complete. This provides me with knowledge if my overclock was helpful or harmful (throttling).<\/p>\n<p>Intel Burn Test claims that 8 minutes of testing is roughly equal to 40 <strong>hours <\/strong>of Prime95.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle:Results of the Testing--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Result &#8211; Prime95<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Test 1: i7 930 set at 190BLCK with a 22x multiplier. Effective frequency is ~4.2GHz. The system was stable, with no throttling, for just under 9 hours.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/p95190blck9hourstable-jpg.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" title=\"p95190blck9hourstable\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/p95190blck9hourstable_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=400%2C182\" border=\"0\" alt=\"p95190blck9hourstable\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note the middle of the CPU temperature graph where the CPU temperatures start to drop rapidly. This is the time that I woke up and realized that my water temperatures had increased tremendously overnight and I cranked up the fans on my radiator.<\/p>\n<p>Test 2: i7 930 set at 194 BLCK with a 22x multiplier. Effective frequency is 4268MHz. I ran this test for only one iteration (Test 1- Test 10). This test did eventually fail, but the duration it took to fail was greater than 1 hour.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/p95194blckstable-jpg.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" title=\"P95194blckstable\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/p95194blckstable_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=400%2C215\" border=\"0\" alt=\"P95194blckstable\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Result &#8211; OCCT<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Test 1: i7 930 set at 190BLCK with a 22x multiplier. Under this test \u2013 just like Prime95, my system was stable. It ran for 14 hours under \u201clarge data set\u201d and came back with no problems. The temperature graph doesn\u2019t show much because I returned to my computer a while after it had finished. The maximum temperatures can be seen by Core Temp.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/190blckocct14htest-jpg.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" title=\"190blckocct14htest\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/190blckocct14htest_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=400%2C223\" border=\"0\" alt=\"190blckocct14htest\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Test 2: i7 930 set at 194 BLCK with a 22x multiplier. Effective frequency is 4268MHz. This test I only ran for 15 minutes because of the results you will see below for Intel Burn Test. After 15 minutes the test reported that the system was stable. I didn\u2019t agree.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/occt194blck15minstable-jpg.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" title=\"occt194blck15minstable\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/occt194blck15minstable_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=400%2C173\" border=\"0\" alt=\"occt194blck15minstable\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Result &#8211; IBT<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Test 1: i7 930 set at 190BLCK with a 22x multiplier. I set this test to 150 iterations, but stopped it after 108 runs. I felt that since OCCT and Prime95 was stable, IBT should also be stable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/ibt190blck108ittstable-jpg.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" title=\"ibt190blck108ittstable\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/ibt190blck108ittstable_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=400%2C213\" border=\"0\" alt=\"ibt190blck108ittstable\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Test 2: i7 930 set at 194 BLCK with a 22x multiplier. Effective frequency is 4268MHz. This is the result I was hoping for \u2013 finally an end to the madness. Less than 3 seconds after Everest showed 100% CPU usage, the PC BSOD. This occurred within 20 seconds of starting the test.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle:Conclusion--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If my results haven\u2019t proven anything to you, think about it this way. You recently built your computer and you\u2019re trying to overclock it. Since overclocking is an \u201cYMMV\u201d sport, you cannot assume that it\u2019s going to hit 5GHz because another similar binned processor is hitting 5GHz. You have to apply the guess and check model. You then need to test at certain intervals for stability. This can be a long and tedious process with a ton of frustration and BSODs (my counter is at 29). The idea is to pick a program designed to find errors, and do it as quickly as possible so you can move onto your next step. I have found that Intel Burn Test is the right test for that job. After completing Test 1, I knew my CPU was fully stable at 190BLCK, but I also knew it failed at 195BLCK on all tests. Test 2 was derived by setting the BLCK value to 190 + 1, and then checked for stability &#8211; rinse and repeat. I chose IBT since it has the shortest duration. IBT passed all the way up to 193 BLCK, but failed immediately at 194. This process took me roughly 20 minutes to complete. I then wanted to see if either Prime95 or OCCT could detect an error at 194 BLCK as quickly as IBT did. OCCT said my computer was stable after 15 minutes of running it, and Prime95 was no different. There obviously was a discrepancy between the programs.<\/p>\n<p>What I would like you to take away from this test is that 3 minutes of stability testing is by no means an accurate representation of true system stability, but it can quickly get you on your way to the next and final step.<\/p>\n<p>I personally think Prime95 is an aging test. It shouldn\u2019t be the main stability test for your CPU. In fact, none of them should be. From here on out, I will personally be using a combination of OCCT and IBT. The reason for my choice is as such; IBT wins out at quickly determining CPU stability so you can move onto the next test. It offers the ability to benchmark the CPU to test if the overclock provides any actual advantages to system speed. It does lack the ability to stress the CPU continuously over a set period of time.<\/p>\n<p>If you recall the results from IBT\u2019s test one, you can see the CPU temperatures along with CPU usage are varying from 100% during the test, to 0% during its \u201cbreak time.\u201d This is where OCCT shines. Besides the 1 minute monitoring at the beginning and the 4 minute cool down period at the end (which as MrK pointed out, this does not happen if you choose \u201cinfinite loop\u201d), the time in the middle is full load. As you can see in my Prime95 first test, over a long duration my water temperatures increased dramatically. With IBT, your cooling solution has the time to recuperate, with OCCT \u2013 it does not.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody wants to build a computer and then spend weeks or months checking for stability. My recommendation to you is to use IBT with 1-5 iterations at certain increments of overclocking. Keep going until you\u2019re satisfied with the overclock. Once you\u2019ve reached that stage, run OCCT for 24 hours, and then run IBT for 150 iterations. If you have no errors \u2013 you\u2019re free to go.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not overclocking, just run OCCT and IBT for 24 hours and 150 iterations respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, go and enjoy what you just paid money for. That\u2019s the reason why we should check for stability. If it continuously fails \u2013 you\u2019re not going to enjoy it.<\/p>\n<p>Hope you found this useful!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><em>This review was done by me for ABT exclusively.
