The PSU should never be cheap nor generic. The old saying, &#8220;pennywise and pound foolish&#8221; comes to mind as being especially apt in choosing a PSU.\u00a0 Too much depends on it to go bargain bin or generic hunting.\u00a0 Instead, look for sales and perhaps even rebates to save money.  At the time of writing this article, Thermaltake&#8217;s ToughPower XT 775 W PSU has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153127\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153127', 'on sale at NewEgg.com']);\" >on sale at NewEgg.com<\/a> for the last few weeks for only $124.99 after a $25 mail-in-rebate.<\/p>\n<p>In considering that choosing your PSU is like buying insurance for your expensive hardware, you also need to remember that a quality PSU will likely last through several builds if you plan ahead. Another thing to consider is \u201cnoise\u201d \u2013 ideally you do not want your power supply\u2019s cooling fan adding <em>any<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Box1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19983\" title=\"Box1\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Box1.jpg?resize=300%2C285\" alt=\"Box1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Box1-300x285.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Box1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We are not out of order by insisting on Thermaltake&#8217;s ToughPower XT 775 W PSU.  We are helping to get the word out that generic and cheap power supplies actually waste a lot of electricity and thus your money.  They also hurt your wallet by producing excess heat which will cost you more in electricity usage per month in cooling your room.  Even worse, a cheap PSU may not provide stable power for your PC components and will perhaps even shorten their life; and it will certainly limit your overclocking potential.<\/p>\n<p>We are using our Thermaltake Element G case <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=18870\">(which we reviewed here)<\/a> to house our Core i7-920 overclocked to 3.80 GHz (plus) and we have planned for at least HD 5870 CrossFire or a GTX 480 plus our GTX 280 which we use as a PhysX card.\u00a0 So, we require absolute stability from our power supply unit. We also plan a practical and thorough test of this PSU\u2019s stability; something simple that an enthusiast might also attempt.<\/p>\n<p>We have also been living with this PSU for the past two months and have used it in one other build beside our overclocked Core i7-920.\u00a0 We also used our Thermaltake ToughPower XT 775 W PSU to power our overclocked Phenom II 955-x4 which is also rock solid at 3.80 GHz with the same combination of HD 5870 CrossFire or GTX 480-GTX 280 in PhysX, and we will share our impressions of both builds with you.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Why <\/strong><\/span>Thermaltake<span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Thermaltake considers themselves to be a relatively new company that formed in 1999, eleven years ago.\u00a0 They have been at the forefront of creating new and exciting products since the time where most computer users were provided with little to no choices for cooling components that may seem irrelevant, but in reality are crucial to the performance of a PC. the warranty information is printed on the yellow card &#8211; 5 years warranty which is excellent for a PSU.\u00a0 The accessories come in a canvas bag and the power cord comes in a throwaway cardboard box.\u00a0 Strangely, it has a &#8220;new car&#8221; The rest of it is modular which has eight connectors, four black connectors for SATA\/peripherals power cables and four dark red for video card power cables.\u00a0 The cables are 18 AWG wires which is ideal.<\/p>\n<p>The cables attached to the Toughpower XT 775 W are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Main motherboard cable with a 24-pin connector.<\/li>\n<li> One cable with one EPS12V connector and two ATX12 volt connectors which couple together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The modular cables included with the ToughPower XT 775 W are<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Two video card power cables with one six-pin connector each.<\/li>\n<li> Two video card power cables with one six- plus one two-pin connector (which can form an 8-pin connector) each.<\/li>\n<li> Two cables with four SATA power connectors each.<\/li>\n<li> Two cables with three standard peripheral power connectors each.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Thermaltake&#8217;s ToughPower XT 775 W PSU&#8217;s PCIe cabling allows for the most modern 6-pin plus 2-pin connectors for two power-hungry videocards; you could use two GTX 480s (or in our case, GTX 480 + GTX 280) or two HD 5970s in CrossFire-X without needing anything other than the cabling that is included in the box (except for the multi-GPU bridge connector which is specific to either AMD Graphics cards or NVIDIA cards, of course)<\/p>\n<p>Here is where you connect your PC to the Thermaltake&#8217;s ToughPower XT 775 W. It is rated for a total of 775 watts at 82% (plus) percent efficiency.   It is rated &#8220;Silver&#8221; by a company,\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.80plus.org\/\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.80plus.org\/', '80 Plus']);\" >80 Plus<\/a>\u201d but is more conservatively advertised as &#8220;Bronze&#8221; by Thermaltake.\u00a0 80 Plus tests (for a fee) power supplies from many vendors to certify that the submitted PSUs are actually over 80% efficient at 20%, 50% and 100% loads as claimed.\u00a0 80 Plus has expanded their testing to include bronze (82%), silver (85%) and gold (87%) certifications for power supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Efficiency is the ratio between the useful output of a PSU and the input. For example, if your computer actually uses 600W but draws 800W from the outlet, then its PSU\u2019s efficiency is 600W\/800W, or 75%.  It also means in this example, that 200W of AC power is not converted into DC and is wasted.  Older or generic computer PSUs are typically 75% or less efficient.\u00a0 The more efficient your power supply is, the less your computer will waste power. Since any AC power that isn\u2019t converted into DC is exhausted as heat into your room, a more efficient power supply unit will run cooler and your room&#8217;s air conditioner will also not have have to work as hard.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the 140 mm fan used to cool the Thermaltake&#8217;s ToughPower XT 775 W. There are advantages and disadvantages either way. We have dropped screws inside the PSU when the fan faced up. As a tip, cover your open PSU with a cloth when you are adding a video card, for example.\u00a0 In the above example, we are using HD 5870 CrossFire in our Thermaltake Element G case and the best way to orient the PSU is this specific case is as shown so that the cool air is drawn from the bottom of the case and not from two hot video cards.\u00a0 Of course, the Element G case has superb airflow and we simply could not overheat that case.<\/p>\n<p>There is one further disadvantage with the the PSU turned &#8220;upside down&#8221; (below) as we no longer see the three LEDs that indicate the PSU state.\u00a0 It is not so important unless you have a window in your case&#8217;s side panel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/PSU_over.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20118\" title=\"PSU_over\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/PSU_over.jpg?resize=300%2C291\" alt=\"PSU_over\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/PSU_over-300x291.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/PSU_over.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If the fan is facing down, it draws air in from below the bottom of the case and exhausts it out the back of the PSU \u2013 outside of the case airflow completely. If the fan is facing up, it draws warm air from inside your PC and exhausts it out through the PSU back grille. We used the Element G&#8217;s built-in dust filter only with the Thermaltake&#8217;s ToughPower XT 775 W fan facing downward.<\/p>\n<p>Facing downward with the fan drawing air in, the Element G&#8217;s built-in dust screen does not allow the PSU to become clogged with dust; however to keep the PS cool and with good air flow, the dust filter itself may need to be cleaned \u2013 especially if you are in a dusty environment.\u00a0  If the dust filter starts to clog with dust, simply tip your PC on its side and vacuum the dust away.  You can also use a brush to loosen the dust, if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Note the back of the Thermaltake&#8217;s ToughPower XT 775&#8217;s grill (image below) which allows a free flow of air to cool your power supply unit\u2019s internal components. What if we use our pair of HD 5870s in CrossFire? Thermaltake is very conservative in its ratings.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the standards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>3.3V<\/strong> &#8211; 3.125 to 3.465<\/li>\n<li><strong>5V<\/strong> &#8211; 4.75 to 5.25<\/li>\n<li><strong>12V<\/strong> &#8211; 11.4 to 12.6<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are a few shots of my digital multimeter and Kill-a-Watt together measuring each rail \u2013 these are the most extreme variances that I could find from power turn on through to maximum power draw and they are well within specifications. The 3.3v rail was dead on most of the time.  Plus (not minus) .1V and no other variance at any wattage that we could give it.\u00a0 Everything else was within + or &#8211; .02 volts and probably our digital multimeter was incapable of being any more accurate.\u00a0 Whenever you use a digital multimeter make very sure that it is calibrated properly.<\/p>\n<p>Every test that we threw at this power supply &#8211; Everest Ultimate, 3D\/PC Mark Vantage, FurMark&#8217;s Hot-as-Hell burning test &#8211; it took in stride.\u00a0 Amazingly we see our Thermaltake&#8217;s ToughPower\u00a0 XT 775 W PSU acting very much like a very conservatively rated power supply unit. Very impressive!\u00a0 This is a great power supply!\u00a0 Let&#8217;s wrap up this review and sum up our conclusions.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: The Test--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>The Conclusion<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We are very impressed with Thermaltake&#8217;s ToughPowerXT 775 W PSU.  It does more than it is advertised to do and we have been testing it under the most severe gaming conditions for well over a month with two different builds that require absolute stability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Pros:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A conservative-looking, very silent and stable, underrated PSU for a great price!<\/li>\n<li>Cool packaging and accessories<\/li>\n<li>82% (plus) efficiency results in a PSU that can be cooled quietly by a 140 mm nearly silent fan even at extreme load.<\/li>\n<li>Flat cabling allows for better airflow; modular design allows you to use only the cables you need<\/li>\n<li>Well-built PSU insures stable power past its rating as it is rated at 50 C, not at 25 C as with most PSUs.<\/li>\n<li>3 LEDs show the state of the PSU (if you have a clear panel and it is installed with the fan down).<\/li>\n<li>The PSU&#8217;s cooling fan runs a few seconds after power off to insure the internal components stay cool to last long.<\/li>\n<li>5-year warranty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Cons:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimal written instructions included (go to their site)<\/li>\n<li>Cables are very stiff and difficult to bend (pre-bend them)<\/li>\n<li>PSU remains &#8220;on&#8221; when the PC is off (use a power strip if you want to be extra &#8220;green&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We feel a big thumbs-up is in order for Thermaltake&#8217;s ToughPower XT 775 W  !
