Ursula Burns, \u00a0at Xerox; and a few others.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20205\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20205\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20205\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-23.jpg?resize=215%2C286\" alt=\"Ursula Burns, Xerox CEO\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-20205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ursula Burns, Xerox CEO<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Referring to Ms Burns as a token is really a disservice.<\/p>\n<p>This straight-talking boss became the first black female CEO on the Fortune 500.\u00a0 In addition to strengthening a company that&#8217;s still rebounding from near bankruptcy, she does her own shopping.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>That\u2019s leadership by example!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to believe that there aren\u2019t more prepared, enabled, willing to be industry forces, market changers.<\/p>\n<p>A recent report by Booz &amp; Co recently noted that more than one billion fell into the not prepared\/enabled categories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Women of the Third Billion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-32.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20198\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-32.jpg?resize=450%2C313\" alt=\"Untitled-3\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-32.jpg 450w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-32-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 3 &#8211; Up-n\u2019-Comers \u2013 <\/strong>They\u2019re about a fourth of the women age 20 \u2013 65.\u00a0 The 3<sup>rd<\/sup> billion falls into six categories reflecting how educationally prepared and enabled they are, as well as whether they live in a developed or emerging nation.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 Booz &amp; Co.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are reasons this exists &#8212; cultural constraints and educational restrictions that have held women back in such areas as Latin America, Asia, the Pacific Rim, the Middle East, Eastern and Central Europe, and Africa.<\/p>\n<p>However, Booz and ILO (International Labor Organization) experts say these roadblocks are disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>Booz says that if we get this Third Billion into mainstream middle-class, hockey stick sales will result.<\/p>\n<p>We admit right now we aren\u2019t an expert on this subject \u2013 just ask my wife and daughter \u2013 but we read a lot\u2026study a lot\u2026analyze a lot\u2026observe a lot\u2026listen a lot.<\/p>\n<p>Still, we\u2019re a lot like Sigmund Freud, <em>\u201cThe great question that has never been answered, and which I have not yet been able to answer, despite my thirty years of research into the feminine soul, is &#8220;What does a woman want?&#8221;<\/em> <strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We all know the obvious\u2026 women buy goods and services differently from men.<\/p>\n<p>Companies with a strong female product\/service understood Jill Ruckelshaus when she said, <em>\u201cNo one should have to dance backward all of their lives.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Decision Makers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since that is true and they are making more of the household discretionary purchases (Boston Consulting Group says over 70%), then perhaps it behooves us to understand what they want and where they get their information, assistance to make purchasing decisions and how they develop product\/service loyalties.<\/p>\n<p>If the female is such an important decision maker for our products, services why do <strong><em>most<\/em><\/strong> organizations fall short?<\/p>\n<p>Well:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They don&#8217;t do enough research<strong><em> with<\/em><\/strong> their female consumer base \u2013 how they learn about products,      how they investigate\/buy\/use\/recommend them.<\/li>\n<li>They don&#8217;t understand how a      working mother balances it all. (Wouldn\u2019t want their \u201cjob!\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Guys work with guys to      develop\/design products\/services, set prices, create marketing efforts.<\/li>\n<li>Senior male execs usually      have manufacturing, engineering, finance backgrounds so they focus on      technical, functional features, capabilities.\u00a0 Women buy on how the product makes them      feel \u2013 wise, smart, intelligent, understood, appreciated \u2013 and tend to      replace products more quickly.<\/li>\n<li>If business is slow, males      cut prices, create promos to bump up sales.\u00a0 Females question why no one wants the      product or where you compromised quality.<\/li>\n<li>Women look for what is new,      better and are delighted with innovation, but too many firms take the      easy\/cheap product development route with incremental      enhancements\/improvements.<\/li>\n<li>A testosterone product that      has cosmetic changes \u2013 size, shape, packaging, color, marketing strategy \u2013      and doesn\u2019t meet women\u2019s wants\/needs, doesn\u2019t fool them.<\/li>\n<li>A \u201cme-too\u201d or \u201cXYZ killer\u201d      product doesn\u2019t impress her much.\u00a0      She appreciates original design, flair, aesthetics.<\/li>\n<li>Stereotypical marketing      messages that don\u2019t address the woman\u2019s wants, needs, problems fall on      deaf ears.<\/li>\n<li>Males don\u2019t understand\/appreciate      the power of the female\u2019s \u201ccommunity\u201d which has become even larger (and      stronger) because of the Internet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Reasons Women Visit Social Networks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-42.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20199\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-42.jpg?resize=328%2C220\" alt=\"Untitled-4\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-42.jpg 328w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-42-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 4 &#8211; Community Members \u2013 <\/strong>Females don\u2019t just cruise the iNet.\u00a0 They head online with a purpose and a focus.\u00a0\u00a0 They connect and stay connected.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 ShesConnected<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to being a part of the out-of-house workforce, women seldom are afforded the \u201cluxury\u201d of putting aside the household tasks.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, they feel a lack of time in their lives and pressure to \u201cmake\u201d time to complete all their necessary tasks.\u00a0 Their time challenges are:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. <strong>Too many demands on their time <\/strong><strong><br \/>\n2. <\/strong><strong>Too many conflicting priorities<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n3. <\/strong><strong>Not enough time for themselves <\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When men want something, they go to the store, buy it, tell their buddies\/significant other all the research, analysis they did (O.K., rationalize).<\/p>\n<p>A woman\u2026shops!<\/p>\n<p>They look more closely at consumer reviews and they trust, respond more positively to the consumer reviews.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Influence of Brand-\/Product-Related Online Content on Females<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-51.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20200\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-51.jpg?resize=329%2C304\" alt=\"Untitled-5\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-51.jpg 329w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-51-300x277.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 5 &#8211; Time Well Spent \u2013 <\/strong>Females seem to find their online time as a break from the stress of work\/family to connect with others and share experiences, information.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 BlogHer, iVillage, Compass Partners<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mothers are more involved with social media than what most marketers see as their \u201csweet spot\u201d market \u2013 GenX, GenY people.<\/p>\n<p>According to SheConnected, more than 59 percent of female social netters visit sites multiple times a day; and 14 percent check at least once a day.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all part of their balancing activities such as teams, friends, school, jobs, a life away from work.<\/p>\n<p>Or, as an unknown author (probably a connected female) said, <em>\u201cI am woman!\u00a0 I am invincible!\u00a0 I am pooped!\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>While companies may recognize this with the 2.25 billion of women who don\u2019t fall into the up-and-coming third-billion market, it is going to be more important for those who are newly enabled, newly prepared.\u00a0 That\u2019s because they aren\u2019t limited to one country, one culture but are found everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>As they become more mainstream, they\u2019ll lead more independent lives, their online activities will grow\u00a0 and their reach, influence will only increase.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Female Online Activities<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20203\" title=\"Untitled-8\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-8.jpg?resize=328%2C184\" alt=\"Untitled-8\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-8.jpg 328w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Untitled-8-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 8 &#8211; Broader Activities \u2013 <\/strong>As the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> billion consumers becomes more educated and enabled, they will undoubtedly find communities on the iNet where they can exchange information, ideas, experiences and grow rapidly as major purchasing influences.\u00a0 <strong>Source \u2013 ShesConnected<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They will invest more of the household income in the education of the children and will have a much greater influence\/impact on their goals, wants, needs.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll shape the consumers you want to reach\u2026tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>The female economy is becoming too big for companies to ignore.\u00a0 BestBuy, Target, Google, Microsoft and a number of other firms are aggressively assessing what they can do to enable,\u00a0 prepare, recognize, address these consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Companies should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> recognize the phenomenon, its size, market segment<\/li>\n<li> invest resources against market\/product roadmaps<\/li>\n<li> closely examine female satisfactions, dissatisfactions<\/li>\n<li> prioritize how they will address the dissatisfactions, product\/service shortcomings<\/li>\n<li> monitor, actively respond in an open, honest manner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Companies that best serve &#8212; and will benefit from &#8212; the female economy are the ones that are willing work hard to do the impossible\u2026learn about female consumers hopes, wishes, wants, needs, goals.<\/p>\n<p>Women sometimes know we\u2019re trying, but they stand shoulder to shoulder then turn to their daughters as Xena\u2019s Leah did and say, <em>\u201cHeathens to the left of me, infidels to the right! Tremendous!
