First and foremost are the two thumb buttons on the left side of the device (which are also becoming a norm). These buttons make Internet browsing an absolute pleasure. They allow you to go back and move forward through your pages without having to move the cursor to your toolbar.

Next, there are two buttons located near the scroll wheel that are (by default) used for changing the DPI settings up or down. This is very convenient especially when you need to change the mouse sensitivity quickly; especially in a game.

There are four large mouse feet on the Naos 500 and they are made of Polytetrafluoroethyl (PTFE). This allows for an extremely smooth experience when sliding the mouse around.

The weight system employed on this device is very good. You can add up to 40g more weight to it in eight 5g increments. It is also possible to make one side of the mouse heavier than the other for more ‘swing’ in your movements to one side or the other. I found this to be practical in some applications and games. It is a very neat feature having the weights on either side; it streamlines the way the mouse feels when weight is added so that it doesn’t feel back-heavy.

These features are all great but most of all, they are packed in without taking away the simplicity of just using the mouse. These controls can be found under the first tab aptly called Mouse Settings.

Here you can configure what you would like each button to do, adjust the double click and scroll speeds, and also the polling rate. You can also enable pointer acceleration and adjust its sensitivity.

With sensitivity in mind, the next tab is even more helpful. The Sensor Performance tab is where you set the sensitivity of the tracking laser in three configurable DPI steps. These presets can be selected on the fly during regular use by changing the DPI level from low to medium to high and back. These levels are what you predetermine within the software.

This tab also gives you the opportunity to adjust the lift distance. This is the distance to which you can raise the mouse off the tracking surface and the laser still registers its movement. This is a great feature for those users that like to move their mouse around a lot.

Next we have the Surface Quality Analyzer Tool, or SQAT for short. This simply does what it says. It analyzes the surface you use your mouse on and determines how good (or bad) it is for your mouse. This can play a factor in accuracy and consistency so try to use a surface that is as good (or excellent) as possible.

Editorial note: Keep an eye out for an upcoming review of the Mionix Sargas 360.

Software (continued)

The next tab gives us the Color Settings and this is a much-loved section for many. It is important to note that you may set different colour schemes for each of the five profiles.

The Macro Settings tab is straight forward and it allows you to create new macros (sequences) for execution at any given time thereafter, with just the push of a button. Very cool! I have made a few very useful ones such as “Ctrl + W” to a single mouse button. That closes a tab for me while browsing and I don’t have to move the mouse all the way to my toolbar!

The Support tab is simple and is the easiest way to get online product support or to update your firmware and/or driver software. This is also a nice touch.

The 128kb on-board memory allows you to keep your settings saved on the mouse itself. This means that although you make the settings in the software, if you take your mouse to another machine, you don’t have to install the software to use it! In addition, all your settings migrate with it and are fully usable!

Overall, the software is very well laid out and easy to understand. There are no hiccups in adjusting settings and everything takes effect as soon as you hit the Apply button. If for any reason you would like to remove your customizations, just simply click the Reset to default button (which is located in the lower left of all tabs), then confirm your request.

There was only one weird issue I had while using this mouse though. Sometimes it would stop responding whenever I wake up the computer from Sleep mode or when the OS resumes from hibernation. This does not happen every time but it seems to happen whenever I’m in a hurry. It is as if the mouse also goes into a sleep mode and I am just impatient with it ‘waking up’. Not a deal breaker at all really but it deserved mention. This issue should be fixed in upcoming firmware or software updates.

Conclusion

The Naos 5000 is a superior gaming mouse and is really a cut above the rest in so many ways. Mionix, through this mouse, has definitely made its mark on PC gaming. Being very easy to set up and get going, the Naos 5000 will show off its gaming prowess right from the start. Gamers will be very pleased.

The Naos 5000 is also great for everyday desktop tasks with smooth tracking and programmable controls. This makes it very simple to execute common tasks with the press of a single button. There are so many nice things about this mouse that it is hard to find a reason not to get one. Mionix really did their homework on this device and it shows. The Naos 5000 is a great product.

Pros:

Very comfortable ergonomic design

Up to 5040 Dots Per Inch (DPI)

Very accurate

7 programmable buttons

Up to 5 separate profiles

User-friendly control software

128kb of onboard memory

Customizable LEDs (24 colours and off)

Cons:

No horizontal scroll

A bit on the expensive side

It would have been nice to have horizontal scroll but that is not a deal-breaker, and neither is the resume issue. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) on the Naos 5000 is a pricey US $90* but it is totally worth it. It easily gets my recommendation.

* – I originally made a mistake in quoting the MSRP of the Naos 5000 as US $50 when in fact, that is the price of the Naos 3200.
