{"id":22610,"date":"2010-12-15T01:41:16","date_gmt":"2010-12-15T01:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=22610"},"modified":"2010-12-20T23:36:33","modified_gmt":"2010-12-20T23:36:33","slug":"gtx-460-showdown-evga-ftw-vs-galaxy-soc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/gtx-460-showdown-evga-ftw-vs-galaxy-soc\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing AMD&#8217;s HD 6970 and HD 6950"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AMD Graphics and Nvidia are locked in a perpetual battle to one up each other in what can only be described as a &#8220;graphics war&#8221;.  Nvidia had issues with introducing their Fermi DX11 architecture and video cards and AMD beat them to the market by over six months with the first DX11 video cards about this time last year.  In April of this year, Nvidia launched  their GTX 470 and GTX 480 which were criticized for being  hot-running, power-hungry and loud although they offered somewhat higher performance than AMD&#8217;s HD 5870 and HD 5850.\u00a0  It appears that AMD actually believed that Fermi was unfixable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/chess1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/chess1.jpg?resize=323%2C401\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, a few months later, Nvidia&#8217;s midrange GTX 460 turned out to be a very successful reworking of GF100 Fermi into GF104 that scaled well, ran  cool, had good thermal characteristics, overclocked well and no doubt  ate into AMD&#8217;s then DX11 90% marketshare. To combat GTX 460, AMD released their HD 6000 series codenamed &#8220;Barts&#8221; with HD 6870 and HD 6850 being debuted this past October.  This is not AMD&#8217;s high end, codenamed &#8220;Cayman&#8221;, which has just arrived, but rather their upper-midrange which was renamed from HD 58&#215;0 series and is designed to take on and surpass the GTX 460 and all of its variants.\u00a0 Now we see that the new HD 6970 and HD 6950 are designed to combat Nvidia&#8217;s brand new reworked GF110 which debuted since the HD 68&#215;0 launch as thermally tamed and quiet-running GTX 580 and GTX 570 video cards which significantly surpass the HD 58&#215;0 series&#8217; performance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/SIDE-by-SIDE.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22799\" title=\"SIDE-by-SIDE\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/SIDE-by-SIDE.jpg?resize=550%2C261\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/SIDE-by-SIDE.jpg 550w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/SIDE-by-SIDE-300x142.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>ABT was represented by this editor at AMD&#8217;s Press Day at the famous LA Exchange in October and saw AMD&#8217;s vision unfold further for us.  Since we are going to focus on the HD 6970 and the HD 6950&#8217;s <em>performance<\/em> in 23 games, we will only give you the barest outline of their 5 hour presentation which covered &#8220;Barts&#8221;, &#8220;Cayman&#8221; and the future &#8220;Antillies&#8221; graphics cards.  We do see that the reason that they chose downtown Los Angeles is symbolic of their increasing commitment to the movie industry and they have partnered up with several Hollywood movie studios to increase productivity by using AMD hardware and know how.  They also used the presentation to introduce their support for 3D in PC gaming and 3D for video playback.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">AMD&#8217;s Press Event was called &#8220;Believe Your Eyes&#8221; and they laid out their vision for the world&#8217;s press. AMD feels that Fusion is uniquely suited to conquer the world and they stress the &#8220;firsts&#8221; they have accomplished, including being first to bring DX11 GPUs to market very quickly and successfully.  They are quite proud of their marketshare and do not intend to allow Nvidia to make inroads.\u00a0   AMD points out the advantages of their Eyefinity which now allows more displays to be driven off of a single card &#8211; up to six displays now with a hub adapter &#8211; rather than with Nvidia&#8217;s competing Surround solutions which require two similar video cards running in SLI to power 3 displays.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">A rose by any other name &#8230;<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Today, AMD Graphics is proud to introduce an improved version of their successful HD 58&#215;0 series with better performance, but now as the new HD 69&#215;0 series and on the same 40 nm process as the 5000 and 68&#215;0 series.  The advantage is higher performance at lower prices. AMD appeared intent to go after Nvidia&#8217;s GTX 480 by offering more performance at a similar price.  However, they apparently did not appear to expect GTX 5&#215;0 successfully meeting Nvidia&#8217;s goals of reworking GF100 Fermi into GF110.\u00a0 AMD still holds on to the title of fastest video card with their dual-GPU HD 5790 although it trades blows with GTX 580 in many games, losing in the tessellation-heavy games or where CrossFire does not scale.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here is our <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=22151\">interview<\/a> with Stanley Ossias of AMD. He gives an insight into their strategy but it does appear that they did not expect the GTX 580 to so successfully address its issues, nor did they appear to expect GTX 570 before their own Cayman launch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">However, AMD is not abandoning their strategy as it has worked for AMD in the past and they call it &#8220;aiming for the sweet spot&#8221;.  The HD 6000 series will also support a more flexible form of Eyefinity than the 5000 series, and it is also going to support 3D PC gaming and 3D video playback.  What may be confusing to many is that HD 6870 and HD 6850 are slower than HD 5870 and HD 5850 respectively and yet are replacing them.  AMD&#8217;s goal is to give more gamers the ability to experience HD 58&#215;0-type performance in a less expensive, smaller and even less power-hungry video card.\u00a0 On the other hand, the HD 6970 is AMD&#8217;s fastest single-GPU card and the true successor to their successful HD 5870, just as the HD 6950 replaces the HD 5850.  In many ways, a picture is worth 1,000 words and here is AMD&#8217;s continuation of their video card strategy:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Strategy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21570\" title=\"Strategy\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Strategy.jpg?resize=450%2C231\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Strategy.jpg 450w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Strategy-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We still see changes only to the upper midrange and at the high end.  AMD is continuing the HD 5700 series for now; unchanged, as they evidently feel unchallenged by Nvidia&#8217;s GTS 450 which we reviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=20306\">here<\/a> against HD 5750. In the above chart, we see the HD 5800 series diverge into 3 streams &#8211; the &#8220;Antilles&#8221;, an &#8220;X2&#8221; video card at the highest end as a successor to the current dual-GPU HD 5970; the &#8220;Cayman&#8221; launching today, which is using AMD&#8217;s fastest single GPU to succeed and surpass the Cypress HD 5870 and we have been expecting  that it would take on Nvidia&#8217;s GTX 480 video card.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here is the latest round of our testing of the HD 5870 versus the GTX 480 in our reviews <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=20800\">here<\/a> (overclocked versus super-overclocked).  You can follow the links backward through several other of our GTX 480 vs. HD 5870 testing, back to our first testing of these cards in April.  We can see that the GTX 480 is consistently faster than even the overclocked HD 5870 PCS+ and there is some need for AMD to address this with a faster and also more efficient GPU.\u00a0 The new HD 6950 is the Cayman video card that was designed beat Nvidia&#8217;s formerly second fastest video card, the GTX 470.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">With this launch, AMD has been directly targeting the just now discontinued Nvidia&#8217;s GTX 480.\u00a0 Things move very quickly in the graphics card world.\u00a0 So now, the HD 6970 (SEP $369.00) will take on the GTX 480 and the brand new GTX 570; and the HD 6950 (SEP $299.00) is said to be in a class of its own, and appears to be similar in performance to the current HD 5870.\u00a0 This is AMD&#8217;s opinion of the way the graphics market stands at this moment and there is no mention of the GTX 470.\u00a0 At any rate, we will examine the performance of the HD 6970 and HD 6950 and compare them to their closest competition to determine their value in a no-holds barred performance showdown with 13 graphics cards and 25 gaming benchmarks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/69x0POSITION_Q42.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22769\" title=\"69x0POSITION_Q4\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/69x0POSITION_Q42.jpg?resize=463%2C216\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/69x0POSITION_Q42.jpg 661w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/69x0POSITION_Q42-300x139.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 463px) 100vw, 463px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">What&#8217;s new in HD 69&#215;0?<\/h2>\n<p>Since &#8220;seeing is believing&#8221; is AMD&#8217;s theme for the 6000 series launch and it is all about the 3 &#8220;eyes&#8221;, we shall briefly cover them here:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eyedefinition<\/li>\n<li>Eyefinity<\/li>\n<li>Eyespeed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under Eyedefinition, we see a further subdivision with more efficient tesselation; there is mention of a Barts tweaked engine, offering up to 2x the tessellation performance of the HD 58&#215;0 GPUs &#8211; an area where AMD was perceived weak in comparison to Nvidia&#8217;s Fermi GPUs in heavily tessellated benchmarks and games.\u00a0\u00a0  With Cayman we see the potential for a further increase of geometry performance and we also see mention of enhanced architecture for efficiently using GPU compute and for improvement and performance in games.  We also note improvements in Anisotropic Filtering (AF) and new Anti-Aliasing modes &#8211; morphological AA and EQAA.<\/p>\n<p>The HD 69&#215;0 series features 2x DVI ports and one HDMI port plus two  mini-DisplayPorts which are DP version 1.2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/DisplayOptions.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22800\" title=\"DisplayOptions\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/DisplayOptions.jpg?resize=389%2C158\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/DisplayOptions.jpg 556w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/DisplayOptions-300x121.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>This is important because of the new Eyefinity features that now allow  for daisy chaining of displays and for using a new hub, much like using a  USB hub, to output to six displays from a single card!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/MultiDisplay61.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-22802\" title=\"MultiDisplay6\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/MultiDisplay61.jpg?resize=300%2C106\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/MultiDisplay61-300x106.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/MultiDisplay61.jpg 656w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eyespeed refers to GPU compute and to AMD&#8217;s &#8220;open initiative&#8221; approach to (everything and especially to) OpenCL, in contrast to Nvidia&#8217;s use of their own proprietary GPU language, CUDA.  We see AMD partnering with Cyberlink, Arcsoft, Viewdle, Adobe, Microsoft and more companies (some of which are also Nvidia&#8217;s partners) to bring you, the end consumer, quality video processing and playback; and of course, UVD 3 accelerated decoding for 3D BluRay playback.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/UVD-3RDGEN.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21693\" title=\"UVD-3RDGEN\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/UVD-3RDGEN.jpg?resize=494%2C253\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/UVD-3RDGEN.jpg 823w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/UVD-3RDGEN-300x153.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In our HD 68&#215;0 <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=21598\">launch article<\/a>, we evaluated AMD&#8217;s claim of 35% better performance per mm over HD 58&#215;0 and found that the HD 6870 is about equal in performance to HD 5850 overall. HDMI 1.4a is available for 3D Blu-ray and we see an improved Tesselator Engine.   AMD now uses a second Ultra Threaded Dispatch Processor and an improved engine logic.  We have noted in previous reviews, that Nvidia&#8217;s Fermi GPUs are faster in heavily tessellated scenes than competitive AMD Cypress GPUs. In other words, the GPU finishes rendering each frame as usual &#8211; but before presenting it to the display, it  runs it through another shader pass to perform the filtering. This differs from traditional multi-sample and super-sample AA techniques where the filtering occurs during the rendering of each frame. In fact, this technique can eliminate aliasing for still images, though it\u2019s intended to work better when in motion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/morphAA1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21573\" title=\"morphAA\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/morphAA1.jpg?resize=550%2C252\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/morphAA1.jpg 550w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/morphAA1-300x137.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The filter works by first detecting high contrast edges with various pixel-sized patterns that are normally associated with aliasing, and assumes they should actually be straight lines that are not aligned to pixel edges. It then estimates the length and angle of the ideal line for each edge, and determines the proportional coverage by the lighter and darker color for each pixel along the edge. Finally it uses this coverage information to blend the colors for each pixel.  All of this is actually being accomplished by the Catalyst drivers through a DirectCompute shader while the Local Data Share is used to keep adjacent pixels in memory for a low overall overhead.  It will be interesting to see if AMD chooses to extend this morphological adaptive AA to the 5000 series as there is no reason it cannot be done, except perhaps to differentiate HD 6000 series from the current one.<\/p>\n<p>AMD&#8217;s diagrams (below) should help to illustrate how this is accomplished.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/morphAA-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21574\" title=\"morphAA-2\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/morphAA-2.jpg?resize=500%2C251\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/morphAA-2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/morphAA-2-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since the edge detection step requires frequent sampling and re-sampling of adjacent pixel colors, it offers a lot of opportunities for data re-use by using the LDS (Local Data Share) hardware to avoid redundant data fetches and to significantly improve performance.  AMD sent us a driver very late in our testing and we are unable to evaluate it as yet.  We simply cannot comment on what we have not yet evaluated.<\/p>\n<h3>Enhanced Quality Anti-Aliasing (EQAA)<\/h3>\n<p>EQAA is a new anti-aliasing option available on the AMD Radeon HD 6900 series. It offers enhanced quality over standard Multi-Sample Anti-Aliasing (MSAA) modes by doubling the number of coverage samples per pixel, while keeping the same number of color\/depth\/stencil samples. This technique offers advanced smoothing of aliased edges without requiring additional video memory, and with a minimal performance cost.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EQAA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22745\" title=\"EQAA\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EQAA.jpg?resize=500%2C224\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EQAA.jpg 500w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EQAA-300x134.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The new Enhanced Quality Anti-Aliasing modes can be enabled by selecting the 2xEQ, 4xEQ, or 8xE modes that have been added to the anti-aliasing slider in AMD Catalyst Control Center. The AMD Radeon HD 6900 series continues to support fully angle invariant anisotropic filtering, and incorporates further improvements in LOD precision relative to the ATI Radeon HD 5000 Series. These image quality benefits come with no additional performance cost and remain enabled at all Texture Filtering Quality settings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">However, our own Senior Editor BFG10K pointed out the flaws in AMD&#8217;s Anisotropic filtering with the transitions, <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=7429\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=3188\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=12648\">here<\/a>.  AMD listened to us and the enthusiast community and they have improved the transitions between filter levels. It allows the GPU to be designed with higher engine clock speeds which can be applied on the broad set of applications that have thermal headroom. AMD PowerTune technology helps enable higher performance that is optimized to the thermal limits of the GPU by dynamically adjusting the engine clock during runtime based on an internally calculated GPU power assessment. AMD PowerTune technology also helps to improve the mechanism to deal with applications that would otherwise exceed the GPU\u2019s TDP.\u00a0 In other words, like Nvidia&#8217;s power limiter, they do not allow a power virus such as FurMark to exceed a predetermined limit.<\/p>\n<p>AMD PowerTune allows for the GPU to run within its TDP budget at higher clock speeds than otherwise possible by managing the engine clock speeds based on calculations  which determine the closeness of the GPU to its TDP limit. AMD&#8217;s new reference Radeon HD 6970 has 1536 Stream Processors with its core operating at 880 MHz with 2GB of GDDR5  at 5.5 GHz (880\/1375 MHz) on a 256-bit bus. There are 32 ROPs and 96 Texture units. The Radeon HD 6950 should perform similarly to  the Radeon HD 5870 due to architectural refinements and fine-tuning.  The HD 6970&#8217;s maximum load board  power is 250 watts (and 190 Watts with Power Tune; &#8220;typical gaming power&#8221; &#8211; see explanation above) and its idle is 20 watts matching the idle of the HD 6950. We are directly comparing the new Caymans with GTX 480\/570\/580 to see how performance varies over a wide spectrum of video cards from both vendors &#8211; from $500 down to below $200.\u00a0 We are using Nvidia&#8217;s very latest WHQL GeForce 263.09 drivers that also give performance increases over the <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=20068\">previous version<\/a>, so both vendors are giving us their very best for this review.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Specifically, you will see us pit our HD 5870 against the new HD 6970 and HD 6950 as well as the HD 6870 and HD 6850 and also against Nvidia&#8217;s reference GTX 480, the GTX 570, 3 GTX 460 variants and the &#8220;oldies&#8221;, GTX 280 and HD 4870. We benchmark 23 modern games and 2 synthetic benchmarks using 1680&#215;1050, 1920&#215;1200 and\/or 2560&#215;1600 resolutions.   Since we are using the fastest of the fast upper-midrange video cards, it makes sense to test at the highest resolutions that they can handle and with the most demanding settings.  We shall also overclock our Cayman HD 69&#215;0 cards to give you an idea of what AMD&#8217;s board partners will soon be bringing you.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Is AMD&#8217;s rival, Nvidia&#8217;s overclocked GTX 580 worth $140 or so more than the HD 6970?<\/h3>\n<p>Since Nvidia has signaled their willingness to engage in a price war by dropping their GTX 460&#8217;s and 470&#8217;s pricing to a bit below AMD&#8217;s new cards, we naturally want to know if the new AMD HD 69&#215;0 cards are worth their prices as they compare to the $350 GTX 570 and the $500 GTX 580.  The new Caymans are certainly priced very competitively and we will show you where it comes down to performance and features.<\/p>\n<h3>Overclocking<\/h3>\n<p>Unfortunately, the overclock on our HD 6970 can best be described as &#8220;mild&#8221; &#8211; from 880\/1375 MHz to 920\/1475 MHz.\u00a0\u00a0 It was not stable at 925 MHz and we had some issues with the unseasonably warm temperatures in our testing lab that appproached 80F.\u00a0 Also, the overclock on our HD 6950 was held back by Catalyst Control Center (CCC) which allowed only a +40 MHz overclock on the core at default settings.\u00a0 Athough the HD 69&#215;0&#8217;s +40 MHz core overclock may be perceived as disappointing, it will give you an idea of scaling while still keeping your own overclocking expectations realistic.  We only used CCC to set our Radeon overclocks and we did not increase the core voltage nor change the fan profile and we tested in a very warm environment that could be described as &#8220;Summer-like&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Because of severe time constraints on this article, HD 6000 series CrossFire will be examined in depth in a further article as well as 3-panel Eyefinity (which can be driven off of a single Radeon) verses Nvidia&#8217;s competing Surround which requires SLI to make it work.  We used our Intel Core i7-920 at 3.8 GHz for this evaluation so there was no chance of any CPU bottlenecking. Performance Optimizations<\/h3>\n<p>With the introduction of the AMD Radeon HD 6900 series and its new hardware texture capabilities, the AMD Catalyst A.I. user interface in AMD Catalyst Control Center has also been updated to allow direct user control over performance optimizations that affects image quality. The new AMD Catalyst A.I. options can be found by opening the 3D settings page and selecting the \u201cAll\u201d tab and scrolling down.<\/p>\n<p>The Texture Filtering Quality slider has three settings \u2013 High Quality, Quality (default), and Performance. The High Quality setting disables all texture optimizations. The Quality setting enables a trilinear optimization as well as an anisotropic sample optimization, which are designed to have no visible impact on image quality while offering improved performance. The Performance setting enables more aggressive versions of these optimizations that offer further performance improvement, but may have an impact on image quality.\u00a0 The AMD Radeon HD 6900 series continues to support fully angle invariant anisotropic filtering, and incorporates further improvements in LOD precision relative to the ATI Radeon HD 5000 Series. These image quality benefits come with no additional performance cost and remain enabled at all Texture Filtering Quality settings.<\/p>\n<p>When comparing performance and image quality against Nvidia video cards, we use the same High Quality Texture Filtering Quality setting in the Nvidia Control Panel as we do in CCC. \u00a0 This ensures the most direct and fair comparison.\u00a0 The Surface Format Optimization checkbox allows improved performance in selected games that use 16-bit floating point surfaces for HDR rendering. It is designed to have no discernible effect on image quality, but we disabled it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/CCC_settings-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21700\" title=\"CCC_settings-1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/CCC_settings-1.png?resize=300%2C290\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/CCC_settings-1-300x290.png 300w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/CCC_settings-1.png 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One important note about settings must be made here.  AMD has listened to enthusiasts and they have finally given us a way to shut off performance optimizations in Catalyst Control Center beginning with Catalyst 10-10 for HD 68&#215;0.  AMD insists that their optimizations never impact image quality (IQ).  However, we have decided to test with them &#8216;off&#8217; and hold AMD&#8217;s new cards to the very highest IQ standards.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Test Configuration--><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Vantage<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Vantage is no longer Futuremark\u2019s latest test. There is a brand new 3DMark11 benchmark that we shall benchmark with next year.\u00a0 However, Vantage has become a DX10 benching standard that is really useful for tracking changes in a<em> single <\/em>system \u2013 especially driver changes. There are two mini-game tests, <em>Jane Nash<\/em> and <em>Calico<\/em> and also two CPU tests, but we are still focusing on the graphics performance. Unfortunately for our purposes, Vantage is a meaningless test with meaningless numbers in a weak attempt to compare one video card&#8217;s performance to another, especially across generations &#8211; even in the same system.  Let&#8217;s move on to PC games and to real world situations and we will create our &#8220;snapshot&#8221; of current performance of our single-GPU video cards!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--pagetitle: Vantage--><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>F.E.A.R.<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/fear-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"FEAR\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/fear_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C184\" border=\"0\" alt=\"FEAR\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em> <\/em> <em> <\/em> <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>F.E.A.R. \u2013 First Encounter Armed Assault<\/em> \u2013 is a DX9c game by Monolith Productions that was originally released in October 2005 by Vivendi Universal Production. Later, there were two expansions with the latest, <em>Perseus Mandate<\/em>, released in 2007. Although the game engine is aging, it still has some of the most spectacular effects of any game. <em>F.E.A.R.<\/em> showcases a powerful particle system, complete with sparks and smoke for collisions as well as featuring bullet marks and other effects including \u201csoft shadows\u201d.This is highlighted by the built-in performance test, although it was never updated.<\/p>\n<p>This performance test will tell you how<em> F.E.A.R.<\/em> will run, but both of its expansions are progressively more demanding on your PC graphics and will run slower than the demo. We always run at least two sets of tests with all in-game features at \u2018maximum\u2019. <em>F.E.A.R.<\/em> uses the Jupiter Extended Technology engine from Touchdown Entertainment. We test this game with the most demanding settings. We use fully maxed details with 4xAA\/16xAF; soft shadows \u2018off\u2019, as they do not play well with AA.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start first at 2560&#215;1600:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/FEAR-16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22658\" title=\"FEAR-16\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/FEAR-16.jpg?resize=482%2C803\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/FEAR-16.jpg 482w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/FEAR-16-180x300.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now we move on to 1920&#215;1200 resolution:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/FEAR-191.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22654\" title=\"FEAR-19\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/FEAR-191.jpg?resize=482%2C801\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/FEAR-191.jpg 482w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/FEAR-191-180x300.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>None of our cards have issues with this game at the highest settings and resolution although the HD 4870 drops off in the minimums and the GTX 580 stands out as the fastest card although the HD 6970 nearly catches it at 1920&#215;1200 and surpasses the GTX 480 and the GTX 470 at both resolutions.  Not so surprisingly, the GTX 280 still puts in a good showing against the GTX 460s.  The HD 5870 is a couple of frames faster than the GTX 570 and the HD 6870 is a frame slower.\u00a0 There is not much difference in practically playing <em>F.E.A.R.<\/em> between the fastest and the slowest video cards as the minimums are already sufficiently high at 1920&#215;1200.\u00a0 The HD 6950 puts in a good showing as the third fastest overall card in this old DX9 benchmark.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: F.E.A.R.--><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>X3: Terran Conflict<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/x3tc-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"X3TC\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/x3tc_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C154\" border=\"0\" alt=\"X3TC\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em> <\/em> <em> <\/em> <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>X3:Terran Conflict<\/em><em> (X3:TC) <\/em>is another beautiful stand-alone benchmark that runs multiple tests and will really strain a lot of video cards. <em>X3:TC <\/em>is a space trading and combat simulator from Egosoft and is the most recent of their X-series of computer games. <em>X3:TC<\/em> is a standalone expansion of <em>X3: Reunion<\/em>, based in the same universe and on the same engine. It complements the story of previous games in the X-Universe and especially continues the events after the end of <em>X3: Reunion<\/em>. Compared to<em> Reunion, Terran Conflict<\/em> features a larger universe, more ships, and of course, new missions. The X-Universe is huge. The Terran faction was added with their own set of technology including powerful ships and stations. Many new weapons systems were developed for the expansion and it has generally received good reviews. It was developed by id Software and Splash Damage and published by Activision. <em>Quake Wars<\/em> pits the combined human armies of the Global Defense Force against the technologically superior Strogg, an alien race who has come to earth to use humans for spare parts and food. It allows you to play a part, probably best as an online multi-player experience, in the battles waged around the world in mankind\u2019s desperate war to survive. <em> <\/em> <em> <\/em> <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Quake Wars<\/em> is an OpenGL game based on id\u2019s Doom3 game engine with the addition of their MegaTexture technology. It also supports some of the latest 3D effects seen in today\u2019s games, including soft particles, although it is somewhat dated and less demanding on video cards than many DX10 games. id\u2019s MegaTexture technology is designed to provide very large maps without having to reuse the same textures over and over again.<\/p>\n<p>For our benchmark we chose the flyby, <em>Salvage Demo<\/em>. It is one of the most graphically demanding of all the flybys and it is very repeatable and reliable in its results. It is fairly close to what you will experience in-game. All of our settings are set to \u2018maximum\u2019 and we also apply 4xAA or 8xAA plus 16xAF in game. First we test at 2560&#215;1600 resolution with all settings fully maxed in-game plus 4xAA\/16xAF:<a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ETQW-251.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ETQW-252.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22670\" title=\"ETQW-25\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ETQW-252.jpg?resize=482%2C1000\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ETQW-252.jpg 482w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ETQW-252-144x300.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All four card offer a similar excellent experience with the GTX 580 again beating the competition; the HD 6970 beats the GTX 480 which edges the GTX 570 and the GTX 460s follow with some pretty weak minimums that are even beaten by the last generation HD 4870 and the GTX 280.  The Radeons put in a decent showing although the HD 5870 is beaten by the GTX 570.  Let&#8217;s crank up the anti-aliasing from 4x to 8x while we test at 1920&#215;1200 resolution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ETQW-191.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22671\" title=\"ETQW-19\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/ETQW-191.jpg?resize=482%2C999\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All of our video cards except for the GTX 280 and stock GTX 460s have no trouble handling this game fully maxed out once the resolution is dropped to 1920&#215;1200. The new GTX 580 really stands out as the quickest among the very best in this game followed by the HD 6970 and the HD 6950 which beat the GTX 480 and the GTX 570.\u00a0 The HD 5870 is also hanging in with this elite company.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: ET:QW--><!--nextpage--> <strong><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare<\/span><\/span><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/strong> <a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4367\" href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?attachment_id=4367\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4367\" title=\"iw3mpcod4\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/iw3mpcod4.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"iw3mpcod4\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><em>Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (CoD4)<\/em> is a first person shooter running on a custom engine. It has nice graphics but the engine is somewhat dated compared to others and it runs well on modern PCs. It is the first <em>CoD<\/em> installment to take place in a modern setting instead of in World War II. It differs from the previous <em>Call of Duty<\/em> games by having a more film-like plot that uses intermixed story lines from two perspectives; that of a USMC sergeant and a British SAS sergeant. There is also a variety of short missions where players control other characters in flashback sequences to advance the story. <em>Call of Duty 4\u2019s<\/em> move to modern warfare introduced a variety of modern conventional weapons and technologies including plastic explosives.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently about 20 multiplayer maps in <em>CoD4<\/em>. It is very popular and there is a new expansion for it. <em>CoD Modern Warfare <strong>2<\/strong><\/em> was also released with updated visuals but it is also not very demanding on graphics cards. For multiplayer, <em>CoD4<\/em> includes five preset classes and introduces the Perks system. Perks are special abilities which allow users to further customize their character to suit their personal style.<\/p>\n<p>Our timedemo benchmark was created by ABT\u2019s own Senior Editor and lead reviewer, BFG10K. Our older generations cards struggle along with the lesser GTX 460s.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s next test at 1920&#215;1200.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/CoD4-193.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22675\" title=\"CoD4-19\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/CoD4-193.jpg?resize=482%2C1002\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/CoD4-193.jpg 482w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/CoD4-193-144x300.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The GTX 580 is the fastest by a couple of framerates while the HD 6970 comes in second followed by the reference HD 5870 and the\u00a0 HD 6950 ahead of the GTX 570 and the GTX 480 and then highly overclocked GTX 460 follows ahead of the HD 6870.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We see results similar to <em>Unreal Tournament 3<\/em> where a popular multiplayer game is very playable even on graphics cards from the last generation and it plays very smoothly with this generation&#8217;s top video cards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: CoD4--><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3>Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/ut3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"UT3\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/ut3.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"UT3\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3)<\/em> is the fourth game in the Unreal Tournament series. <em>UT3<\/em> is a first-person shooter and online multiplayer video game by Epic Games. <em>Unreal Tournament 3 <\/em>provides a good balance between image quality and performance, rendering complex scenes well even on lower-end PCs. Of course, on high-end graphics cards you can really turn up the detail. UT3 is primarily an online multiplayer title offering several game modes and it also includes an offline single-player game with a campaign.  For our tests, we used the very latest game patch for <em>Unreal Tournament 3<\/em>. The game doesn\u2019t have a built-in benchmarking tool, so we used FRAPS and did a fly-by of a chosen level. Here we note that performance numbers reported are a bit higher than compared to in-game. The map we use is called \u201cContainment\u201d and it is one of the most demanding of the fly-bys.<\/p>\n<p>Our tests were run at resolutions of 2560 x 1600 and 1920 x 1200 with UT3\u2019s in-game graphics options set to their maximum values.  One drawback of the way the UT3 engine is designed is that there is no support for anti-aliasing built in. We forced 4xAA for 2560&#215;1600 and 8xAA for 1920&#215;1200 in each vendor\u2019s control panel; 8xQ for Nvidia to match AMD Graphics&#8217; 8xMSAA settings. We record a demo in the game and a set number of frames are saved in a file for playback.  When playing back the demo, the game engine then renders the frames as quickly as possible, which is why you will often see it playing it back more quickly than you would actually play the game.<\/p>\n<p>Here is Containment Demo, first at 2560&#215;1600 with 4xAA forced in each vendor&#8217;s control panel:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/UT3-252.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22676\" title=\"UT3-25\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/UT3-252.jpg?resize=482%2C1006\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Only the HD 4870 falls below the 30 FPS barrier that some consider a minimum for first person shooters.\u00a0 The GTX 580 is the fastest although the HD 6970 beats the GTX 480 and the HTX 570.\u00a0 Now we test at 1920 x 1200 and with 8xAA (8xQ in Nvidia&#8217;s Control Panel) forced<em>:<\/em> <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/UT3-192.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22709\" title=\"UT3-19\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/UT3-192.jpg?resize=482%2C1005\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is absolutely no problem playing this game fully maxed-out with any of our graphics configurations except for the 768MB GTX 460 when 8xQ is forced in the control panel. Arkham Asylum is based directly on the long-running comic book&#8217;s Dark  Knight character. The Joker devised an elaborate plot from inside Arkham  Asylum that Batman is personally forced to put a stop to. The game&#8217;s  primary characters are superbly voiced.<\/p>\n<p>The game is played as an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective  action-adventure game with a primary focus on Batman&#8217;s combat abilities,  stealth, detective skills and complete with an arsenal of gadgets that  can be used in both combat and as exploring in &#8220;detective mode&#8221;.\u00a0 The game  uses a &#8220;Freeflow&#8221; combat system as well as the ability to use Batarangs  and the Bat-Claw. The player also has access to progressively stronger  counter attacks as well as a special attack that can quickly take down a  single foe. Stealth tactics includes silent takedowns by sneaking up on  foes including dropping and\/or gliding from overhead perches.  <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Batman: Arkham Asylum <\/em>uses a highly modified version of the  Unreal Engine 3.  It does not support AA natively but must be added in  and supported by the game&#8217;s developer.  Unfortunately we cannot compare <em>Batman: Arkham Asylum<\/em> using our GeForce <em>exactly<\/em> against the Radeon with PhysX on; so all of our testing is with it off. It is the sixth game in the Grand Theft Auto series. Two episodic expansion packs have since been released since then as late as April of this year. The game is set in a redesigned rendition of Liberty City, a fictional city based heavily on modern day New York City. It follows Niko Bellic, a war veteran from Eastern Europe. He comes to the United States in search of the American Dream and enters a world of organized crime, gangs and corruption.  <em>GTA IV<\/em> is mostly composed of elements from driving games and third-person shooters which features free-roaming gameplay. It features an online multiplayer mode, the first of the GTA series to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the settings that we used.\u00a0 Everything is set to &#8220;High&#8221; and the other settings are completely maxed out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/GTAIV-2Settings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/GTAIV-2Settings.jpg?resize=720%2C450\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The new Cayman cards as well as the GTX 480, the GTX 570 and the GTX 580 by virtue of having more than one GB vRAM, can use even higher settings than the 1 GB vRAM (which are pictured above running nearly out of resources). Serious Sam features cooperative gameplay and allows for split screen action supporting up to 4 players. <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Serious Sam: The Second Encounter<\/em> was remade as &#8220;HD&#8221; using Serious Engine 3. It was released in April, 2010 for PC. Besides updated visuals, new game modes including &#8220;Co-op Tournament&#8221; and &#8220;Survival&#8221; for single player, were introduced in this remake. It is developed by 2K Czech and is published by 2K Games and was released last month. <em>Mafia II<\/em> is set from 1943 to 1951 in Empire Bay which is a fictional city based mostly on San Francisco and New York City along with some influences from Chicago and also Detroit.  <em>Mafia II<\/em> is a gritty drama which chronicles the rise of World War II veteran Vito Scaletta who joins the Falcone Crime Family and becomes a \u2018made\u2019 man. There are 15 chapters in the game and over two hours of game engine generated cutscenes.  <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mafia II<\/em> makes extensive use of Nvidia\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/object\/physx_new.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/object\/physx_new.html', 'PhysX']);\" >PhysX<\/a> whose full effects are seen smoothly only by playing on a PhysX-enabled GeForce and preferably with a second video card dedicated to it.  For this article, we used the full retail game with <em>Mafia II&#8217;s<\/em> built-in benchmark with the highest settings for 1920&#215;1200 and 1680&#215;1050 &#8211; without PhysX except as noted &#8211; and this time we will reserve comment until after both charts. All of our video cards except for the stock GTX 460s will give a satisfactory playing experience despite the benchmark&#8217;s suggestion that the framerates drop too low. However, enabling AA and high PhysX together will bring a GTX 580 to its knees even at 1920&#215;1200 although medium PhysX settings are quite playable.\u00a0 You cannot enable PhyX on a Radeon without incurring a heavy performance penalty. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span>This covers our DX9 games; let&#8217;s move on to DX10 and DX11 games.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Mafia II--><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Call of Juarez<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/coj_dx10-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"CoJ_DX10\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/coj_dx10_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C154\" border=\"0\" alt=\"CoJ_DX10\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a> <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Call of Juarez<\/em> is one of the very earliest DX10 games. It is loosely based on Spaghetti Westerns that became popular in the early 1970s. <em>Call of Juarez<\/em> features its Chrome Engine using Shader Model 4 with DirectX 10. Our benchmark is built into <em>Call of Juarez<\/em>.  It runs a simple flyby of a level that is created to showcase its DX10 effects. It offers good repeatability and it is a good stress test for DX10 features in graphics cards, although it is not quite the same as actual gameplay because the game logic and AI are stripped out of this demo.<\/p>\n<p>Performing <em>Call of Juarez <\/em>benchmark is easy. You are presented with a simple menu to choose resolution, anti-aliasing, and two choices of shadow quality options. We set the shadow quality on \u201chigh\u201d and the shadow map resolution to the maximum, 2048\u00d72048. At the end of the run, the demo presents you with the minimum, maximum, and average frame rate, along with the option to quit or run the benchmark again. The overclocked GTX 460s are faster than the HD 5870 and the GTX 280 and HD 4870 are really showing their age.<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Call of Juarez--><\/p>\n<h2>Lost Planet<\/h2>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/lostplanet-jpg.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0pt none; display: inline;\" title=\"LostPlanet\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/lostplanet_thumb-jpg.jpg?w=720\" border=\"0\" alt=\"LostPlanet\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><em>Lost Planet: Extreme Condition<\/em> is a Capcom port of an Xbox 360 game. It takes place on the icy planet of E.D.N. III which is filled with monsters, pirates, big guns, and huge bosses. This frozen world highlights high dynamic range lighting (HDR) as the snow-white environment reflects blinding sunlight as DX10 particle systems toss snow and ice all around.<\/p>\n<p>The game looks great in both DirectX 9 and 10 and there isn\u2019t really much of a difference between the two versions except perhaps shadows. Unfortunately, the DX10 version doesn\u2019t look that much better when you\u2019re actually playing the game and it still runs slower than the DX9 version.  We use the in-game performance test from the retail copy of <em>Lost Planet<\/em> and updated through Steam to the latest version for our runs. This run isn\u2019t completely scripted as the creatures act a little differently each time you run it, requiring multiple runs. <em>Lost Planet\u2019s <\/em>Snow and Cave demos are run continuously by the performance test and blend into each other.<\/p>\n<p>Here are our benchmark results with the more demanding benchmark, Snow. All settings are fully maxed out in-game including 2x or 4xAA\/16xAF. Next we have the HD 6870, the HD 6850 and the overclocked GTX 460 in a class below our top cards.  The GTX 280 does surprisingly well for a change, nearly matching the overclocked GTX 460 while the HD 4870 is lagging badly behind.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Lost Planet--><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">CRYSIS<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/crysis64_1-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"crysis64_1\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/crysis64_1_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C154\" border=\"0\" alt=\"crysis64_1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next we move on to <em>Crysis<\/em>, a science fiction first person shooter by Crytek. It remains one of the most demanding games for any PC and it is also still one of the most beautiful games released to date. <em>Crysis<\/em> is based in a fictional near-future where an alien spacecraft is discovered buried on an island near the coast of Korea. The single-player campaign has you assume the role of USA Delta Force, \u2018Nomad\u2019 who is armed with futuristic weapons and equipment.<\/p>\n<p><em>Crysis<\/em> uses DirectX10 for graphics rendering.  A standalone but related game, <em>Crysis Warhea<\/em>d was released last year. CryEngine2 is the game engine used to power Crysis and Warhead and it is an extended version of the CryEngine that also powers <em>Far Cry<\/em>. As well as supporting Shader Model 2.0, 3.0, and DirectX10\u2019s 4.0, CryEngine2 is also multi-threaded to take advantage of dual core SMP-aware systems and Crytek has developed their own proprietary physics system, called CryPhysics. However, the experience is similar on all 4 cards although the GTX 580 is very slightly faster if you are keeping score. Ubisoft created it based on their Dunia Engine. The game setting takes place in an unnamed African country, during an uprising between two rival warring factions. Your mission is to kill \u201cThe Jackal\u201d; the Nietzsche-quoting mercenary that arms both sides of the conflict that you are dropped into.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Far Cry 2<\/em> game world is loaded in the background and on the fly to create a completely seamless open world. The Dunia game engine provides good visuals that scale well. The <em>Far Cry 2<\/em> design team actually went to Africa to give added realism to this game. Just Cause 2<\/em> employs the Avalanche Engine 2.0 which an updated version of the engine used in the original and there are impressive visuals as it is made just for DX10. It is set on the fictional tropical island of Panau in Southeast Asia. Rico Rodriguez returns as the protagonist who aims to overthrow the evil dictator &#8220;Baby&#8221; Panay and also to confront his former boss, rogue agent Tom Sheldon.<\/p>\n<p>The game play is similar to that of its predecessor in that the player is free to roam the huge open world without a need to focus on the storyline. The <em>Just Cause 2<\/em> AI has been rewritten to use a planning system which enables the in-game enemies to do more and there is also more vertical game play as well as a manual aiming system that allows the player to target enemy NPC&#8217;s specific limbs. <em>Just Cause 2<\/em> also includes an adaptive difficulty system which scales as the player progresses. There are also new weapons in <em>Just Cause 2<\/em> which include launching laser-controlled rockets as well as several new vehicles including a Boeing 737.  Just Cause 2 even includes dual-grappling hooks which give players the ability to tether unlimited objects to each other including the tethering of enemies to vehicles and to each other which works very well as one of your goals is to cause maximum chaos. It was released in United States on March 6, 2009. You have the opportunity to fly 54 aircraft over real world locations and cities in somewhat realistic environments that are created with satellite data. This game is a more of a take on flying than a real simulation and it has received mixed reviews.<\/p>\n<p>The game story takes place during the time of <em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. H.A.W.X.<\/em> is set in the year 2014 where private military companies have replaced government-run military in many countries. The player is placed into the cockpit as an elite ex-military pilot who is recruited by one of these corporations to work for them as a mercenary. You later return to the US Air Force with a team as you try to prevent a full scale terrorist attack on the United States which was started by your former employer.<\/p>\n<p><em>H.A.W.X.<\/em> runs on DX10.1 faster and with more detail than on the DX10 pathway, so the GTX 280 is somewhat handicapped compared to all of the other cards. All of our other video cards can take advantage of DX10.1. The game is the seventh installment in the Resident Evil series and it was released for Windows in September 2009. Resident Evil 5 revolves around two investigators pulled into a bio-terrorist threat in a fictional town in Africa.  <em>Resident Evil 5<\/em> features online co-op play over the internet and also takes advantage of NVIDIA\u2019s new GeForce 3D Vision technology. The PC version comes with exclusive content the consoles do not have.<\/p>\n<p>The developer&#8217;s emphasis is in optimizing high frame rates but they have implemented HDR, tone mapping, depth of field and motion blur into the game. Re5&#8217;s custom game engine, \u2018MT Framework&#8217;, already supports DX10 to benefit from less memory usage and faster loading. <em>Resident Evil 5<\/em> gives you choice as to DX10 or Dx 9 and we naturally ran the DX10 pathway.<\/p>\n<p>There are two benchmarks built-into <em>Resident Evil 5<\/em>.  We chose the variable benchmark as it is best suited for testing video cards. It is the third game in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. All of these games have non-linear storylines which feature role-playing game elements. In both games, the player assumes the identity of a S.T.A.L.K.E.R.; an illegal artifact scavenger in \u201cThe Zone\u201d which encompasses about 30 square kilometers. It is the location of an alternate reality story surrounding the Chernobyl Power Plant after another (fictitious) explosion. <em> S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Call of Pripyat<\/em> features \u201ca living breathing world\u201d with highly developed NPC creature AI.<\/p>\n<p><em>Call of Pripyat <\/em>utilizes the XRAY 1.6 Engine, allowing advanced modern graphical features through the use of DirectX 11 to be fully intregrated. Call of Pripyat is also compatible with DirectX 8, 9, 10 and 10.1. It uses the X-ray 1.6 Engine<strong> <\/strong>one outstanding feature being the inclusion of real-time GPU tesselation\u2013 a Shader model 3.0 &amp; 4.0 graphics engine featuring HDR, parallax and normal mapping, soft shadows, motion blur, weather effects and day-to-night cycles. As with other engines using deferred shading, the original DX9c X-ray Engine does not support anti-aliasing with dynamic lighting enabled, although the DX10 and DX 11 versions do.<\/p>\n<p>We are using the stand-alone \u201cofficial\u201d benchmark by <em>Clear Sky\u2019<\/em>s creators. <em>Call of Pripyat<\/em> is top-notch and worthy to be part of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R\u2019s universe with even more awesome DX11 effects which help to create and enhance their game\u2019s already incredible atmosphere. As with <em>Clear Sky<\/em> before it, DX10 and now DX11 comes with steep hardware requirements and this new game still really needs multi-GPU to run at its maximum settings.<\/p>\n<p>We picked the most stressful test out of the four, \u201cSun shafts\u201d. It brings the heaviest penalty due to its extreme use of shaders to create DX10\/DX10.1 and DX11 effects. We ran this benchmark fully maxed out in DX11.0 with \u201cultra\u201d settings plus 4xAA, including applying edge-detect MSAA which chokes performance even further. The full game was released in March 2009. <em>BattleForge<\/em> is a card-based RTS that revolves around acquiring and winning by means of micro-transactions for buying new cards. By May, 2009, BattleForge became a Play 4 Free game with fewer cards than the retail version.<\/p>\n<p><em>BattleForge<\/em> supports Directx 11 with full support for hardware tesselation. It is very impressive visually and quite demanding on any system. It also includes a new multiplayer mode. <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dirt 2<\/em> is powered by an updated version of the EGO engine which was featured in <em>Race Driver: Grid<\/em>. This updated EGO engine also features an updated physics engine.  We are using the <em>Dirt 2<\/em> full retail game built-in benchmark at the highest &#8220;ultra&#8221; DX11 setting with 8xAA applied. It is a very demanding game on any PC with the very latest DX11 visuals. <\/span><em>Metro 2033<\/em> is an action-oriented video game with a combination of survival horror, and first-person shooter elements. The game is based on the novel &#8220;Metro 2033&#8221; by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. It was developed by 4A Games in Ukraine and released in March 2010. The game utilizes multi-platform 4A Engine and there is some doubt if the games engine is related to the original XRay engine used in <em>S.T.A.L.K.E.R.<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Metro 2033 <\/em>story takes place mostly in post-apocalyptic Moscow&#8217;s metro system but occasionally the player has to go above ground on some missions and to search for valuables. <em>Metro 2033<\/em>&#8216;s locations reflect the dark atmosphere of real metro tunnels but in a much more dangerous and lethal manner. Strange phenomena and noises are frequent, and mostly the player has to rely only on their flashlight to find their way around in otherwise total darkness. Even more deadly is the surface as it is severely irradiated and a gas mask must be worn at all times due to the toxic air.  <span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">THQ has released an official benchmark for <\/span><em>Metro 2033<\/em> that <span style=\"font-size: small;\">is available when Steam updates the game and it <\/span>includes a quality benchmark that provides minimum\/maximum\/average framerates, and you can adjust many graphics settings including PhysX, AA, DOF and tessellation, and the number of runs.<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Our presets are set to maximum (very high) with 1xAA and no PhysX nor DOF enabled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Here is our first chart at 1920&#215;1200 as 2560&#215;1600 proves too demanding without turning off most of the visuals that make this game really impressive. The events take place ten years after the first game and on the same, now thawed, EDN III. The PC version was released on October 12, 2010 and it runs on the MT-Framework 2.0 engine; an updated version of the engine used in several Capcom games. Campaign mode can have up to 4 players working together over the Internet.  <em>Lost Planet 2<\/em> allows players to create and customize their own characters which will allow them to unlock more things after leveling up and downloading content.\u00a0 There is no real single player content although you can play with the AI.<\/p>\n<p>We are using the stand alone benchmark in DX11 with maximum settings.  We also have the full retail game with the identical benchmark that we shall use as soon as we can. However, we do see the  GTX 570 again passing the GTX 480 and leaving the Radeons behind. That is quite an accomplishment, however,  even the overclocked GTX 460 can beat any of the Radeons by a significant margin. It was  released last month.  We are using the built-in benchmark from the full retail game.  The way tessellation is implemented showed AMD graphics cards were perhaps unnaturally slow compared to other DX11 titles until the latest Catalyst 10-12 when all of the Radeons gained a very significant boost over the previous driver set. <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>H.A.W.X. 2<\/em> runs  on DX11 faster and with more detail than on the DX10 pathway. Here the emphasis is on terrain tessellation which looks outstanding in DX11 and &#8220;flat&#8221; in DX10. Let&#8217;s check out <em>H.A.W.X. 2<\/em> with our video cards at 2560&#215;1600 with fully maxed out in-game settings and with 8xAA:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/HAWX2-251.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22740\" title=\"HAWX2-25\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/HAWX2-251.jpg?resize=482%2C502\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/HAWX2-251.jpg 482w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/HAWX2-251-288x300.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now we test at 1920&#215;1200:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/HAWX2-191.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22739\" title=\"HAWX2-19\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/HAWX2-191.jpg?resize=482%2C500\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/HAWX2-191.jpg 482w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/HAWX2-191-289x300.jpg 289w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We see the GTX 580 flying away from all the competition with the GTX 480 ahead of the GTX 570.  However, the four Radeons that we tested can also play this game fully maxed out at 1920&#215;1200.  We also see that the HD 6870, although generally slower than the HD 5870, is much faster in this tessellation-heavy game and it even edges out the HD 6950.\u00a0 We suspect there are still driver improvements to be made for Cayman and Barts; HD 5870 is weak in comparison.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: H.A.W.X. 2--><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Heaven 2.0 Unigine<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/unigine-1-0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"unigine-1.0\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/unigine-1-0.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"unigine-1.0\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally we come to our last benchmark, Heaven 2.1, on the Unigine engine.   It uses DX11 and heavy tessellation which will strain any graphics card. At least two DX11 games based on Unigine are expected to be released next year.  We use the setting for &#8220;extreme tessellation&#8221; and high shaders and we also set AF to 16x.  We will tell you right now that this test chokes the GTX 580 at the highest settings and resolution so we do not run it at 2560&#215;1600.<\/p>\n<p>Here is Heaven 2.1 benchmark with maxed settings, extreme tessellation and 2xAA at 1920&#215;1200:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Heaven-193.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22736\" title=\"Heaven-19\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Heaven-193.jpg?resize=482%2C498\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Heaven-193.jpg 482w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Heaven-193-290x300.jpg 290w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The extreme tessellation and 2xAA completely choke the Barts and Cypress-based Radeons.  In this case again, we see that the Cayman architecture is less bottlenecked by its tessellator as the lower-performing HD 6870 with a tweaked tessellator is much faster than the otherwise generally faster HD 5870.\u00a0  The GTX 580 is clearly the fastest at this extreme tessellation benchmark and the GTX 570 is a frame faster than the GTX 480.<\/p>\n<p>And now we test at 1920&#215;1200:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Heaven-161.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22735\" title=\"Heaven-16\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Heaven-161.jpg?resize=482%2C496\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Heaven-161.jpg 482w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Heaven-161-291x300.jpg 291w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a synthetic benchmark and we will withhold judgment until we play PC games using the Unigine engine.  However, the GTX 580 again scores highest with the GTX 570 faster than the GTX 480.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Heaven 2.0--><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Overclocking &amp; Performance Summary Chart<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This editor has his own set of criteria for overclocking the HD 6970 and the HD 6950.  We do not raise the fan speed nor do we increase the voltage.  Even so, we found Cayman to be just a bit hotter-running than our HD 5870 and the cooler is slightly noisier under full load.\u00a0 For overclocking we used Catalyst Control Center and we we were disappointed that we could not get more than +40 MHz on either core; the HD 6870 is evidently limited by its core and the HD 6950 is limited by its software.\u00a0 Here are our HD 6970 clocks:<\/p>\n<p><strong> Reference &gt;&gt; the new OC<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>880<\/strong><strong>\/1375 MHz &gt;&gt; 920\/1375 MHz <\/strong>(higher resulted in instability):<\/p>\n<p>And now here are our HD 6950 clocks<\/p>\n<p><strong> Reference &gt;&gt; the new OC<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>800\/1250 MHz &gt;&gt; 840\/1325 MHz <\/strong>(the max allowed by CCC)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An overclock of +40 MHz on each core brought us some decent performance increases which you can see in the <strong>Performance Summary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Performance Summary and Overclocked Cayman results<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Here is our performance summary which compares both the stock and overclocked performance of the HD 6970 and the HD 6950 against the HD 5870 and HD 6870 as well as the the\u00a0 GTX 570 plus the GTX 480 and GTX 580. The games are grouped mostly by DX9 &gt; DX10 &gt; and DX11 and somewhat in chronological order of release.  Average framerates are compared.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PERF_SUM-13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22798\" title=\"PERF_SUM-1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PERF_SUM-13.jpg?resize=550%2C444\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PERF_SUM-13.jpg 550w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PERF_SUM-13-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PERF_SUM-22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22797\" title=\"PERF_SUM-2\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PERF_SUM-22.jpg?resize=550%2C286\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PERF_SUM-22.jpg 550w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/PERF_SUM-22-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There you have it.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s head over to the last page for our price to performance comments and our conclusion.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Performance Summary &#038; Overclocked Results--><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Price to Performance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The HD 6970 leads the Radeons convincingly in most of the  benchmarks and it is a solid improvement over the HD 5870.\u00a0 We see the  GTX 580 completely stand out as a wild card that AMD probably did not  expect; leaving it off of our chart would have made a completely different  impression of the new Cayman Radeons.\u00a0 They do succeed as high-quality  successors to the HD 5870 although they are somewhat eclipsed by the GTX 580&#8217;s  strong performance.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at current pricing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>GTX 580 &#8211; $499<\/li>\n<li>HD 6970 &#8211; $369<\/li>\n<li>GTX 570 &#8211; $349<\/li>\n<li>HD 6950 &#8211; $299<\/li>\n<li>HD 6870 &#8211; $239<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course you have to consider the street pricing of the GTX 480 is at about or below $350 as it is being discontinued and approximately $250 for the HD 5870 which is also at its End of Life (EoL).\u00a0 The GTX 470 pricing should also be considered as it is pretty fast and it is a direct competitor of the HD 5870 and can be got for about $220 to $250; it is not yet discontinued by Nvidia as it fills a price point for them rather nicely.\u00a0 At this point, you also can consider the overclocked GTX 460 and even multi-GPU solutions of CrossFire or SLI to compete with higher performing single-GPU video cards.\u00a0 Then there is the dual-GPU HD 5970 &#8211; still arguably the fastest video card until Antilles arrives next year &#8211; which can be found at a nice discount if you can find it as they have always been in tight supply.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that initially the HD 6970 and the HD 6950 will be equipped with 2GB of vRAM although AMD&#8217;s partners will bring out 1GB versions that will be priced accordingly.\u00a0 If you do not play games at or above 1920&#215;1200, it might be a good cost-cutting measure.\u00a0 You should be able to buy a HD 6870 or HD 6950 immediately as they are said to be in good supply.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Did AMD succeed with HD 69&#215;0?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It appears that AMD succeeded in doing what they set out to do.\u00a0 They brought great value in the higher-performing Cayman and Barts architecture to replace the HD 58&#215;0 series which was aging after a long spell at or near the top.\u00a0 It also appears that they succeeded in challenging the GTX 480 with their own single-GPU flagship HD 6970; something the HD 5870 was unable to do.\u00a0 However, it also appears that AMD was somewhat surprised by the GTX 580 and GTX 570 which completely addressed Fermi GF100&#8217;s former flaws.\u00a0 AMD will now position its upcoming Antilles dual-GPU card against the GTX 580.\u00a0 What is going to make this especially interesting is that Nvidia may well release their own dual-GPU video card based on a GF110 variant that may be even faster although this is pure speculation now.\u00a0 One thing for sure &#8211; exciting times in the Graphics Wars are still ahead!<\/p>\n<p>It  is pretty clear from our 23 games and two synthetic tests that the HD 6950 and HD 6970 are quality replacements and  upgrades over the current HD 5850 and HD 5870 video cards.  The new HD 6970 &#8211; in this snapshot in time &#8211; does not have the clear distinction of being the  fastest video card in its class as it trades blows with the GTX 570 although in our benches it won more than it lost. At a suggested retail price of $369, it sets the HD 6970  just above the average price of the competing GeForce cards.\u00a0 Of course, the Radeon drivers are brand new and we can expect to see performance improvements over the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for a very fast single video card that can support 3 displays simultaneously, or up to 6 with a hub, then the new Cayman GPUs are a great choice and an excellent upgrade over the HD 5000 series.\u00a0 And if you need even more power, you can also use CrossFire-X to pair your video cards to give a substantial frame rate boost to your gaming experience in most cases.\u00a0 And 2GB of vRAM may be necessary for the high resolution that running multi-panel displays require.<\/p>\n<p>We also expect that some of HD 69&#215;0&#8217;s  success will depend on market pricing and also what Nvidia does with their GeForce pricing as the companies respond to each other.   Basically, if you want a fast single GPU that is an improvement in every way over the HD 5870, the new HD 6970 gives you your cake and allows you to eat it too with great competitive pricing.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Conclusion-->This has been quite an enjoyable &#8211; if physically exhausting &#8211; four days, hands on experience for us in comparing our brand-new, under-NDA, HD 6970 and HD 6950 video cards versus our other eleven video cards and we look forward to evaluating further new products from AMD and Nvidia.<\/p>\n<p>We used all &#8220;fresh&#8221; testing with the very latest drivers for all of these video cards except for our HD 6850 which we sent to BFG10K last week for his upcoming Image Quality (IQ) analysis.\u00a0 We wish that we had more than the 4 days that we were allowed to benchmark our two new Cayman cards so as to give you our first impressions.  Fortunately, we have been gaming for months with the reference GTX 480 and with our HD 5870 along with our other test cards, so that we can provide you with a reliable comparison. However, it was certainly worth it and we feel priviliged to bring you our very first benchmarks and performance testing of AMD&#8217;s new Cayman GPUs.<\/p>\n<p>We like the new HD 6970 and the HD 6950 quite a lot.\u00a0 They have much to offer to the serious gamer and especially to someone who wants to use Eyefinity.\u00a0  Soon we will cover AMD&#8217;s continued launch of their HD 6000 series Antilles dual-core GPU video card with which they expect to take on the GTX 580 directly. For a little more money than a GTX 570, you get all the features that AMD video cards have to offer in a very solidly-built, cool and quiet-running HD 6970!  Add to this all the benefits of a flagship single-GPU card that replaces HD 5870, we feel that AMD potentially has a winner in their HD 6970 to offer us and we are pleased to award them our ABT Editor&#8217;s Choice award as AMD has succeeded in bringing the performance of the recently $500 GTX 480 into a $369 package that is much cooler running and quieter to boot!\u00a0 The HD 6950 has the same value in relation to its bigger brother, and it sits in its own class &#8211; also with an ABT Editor&#8217;s Choice award.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EDITORsCHOICE.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-22576\" title=\"EDITORsCHOICE\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/EDITORsCHOICE.jpg?resize=150%2C251\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We do not know what the future will bring, but these new Cayman cards bring great value to the Radeon family as their top two single-GPU video cards.\u00a0  Look for them immediately at an etailer. This editor believes that AMD brings a very full-featured DX11 GPU lineup to the market that will find good acceptance among customers and their fans alike. The new Cayman architecture is a solid improvement over Cypress and it translates to higher performance in gaming without any price premium.<\/p>\n<p>We have also seen AMDs drivers improve historically and their multi-GPU CrossFire-X scaling for newer games is very impressive. We also like the direction they are heading in with their application profiles and more control over settings.\u00a0 We are looking forward to experimenting with the new AA, also.<\/p>\n<p>If you currently game on a HD 4870 or GTX 280, you will do yourself a big favor by upgrading.
