It will be tested against a Radeon 5770 and a GTX470. While the GTX470 is not in the same performance or price category, it is the slowest nVidia card I have in my possession.<\/p>\n<p>Barts (6800 series) represents a refined version of the Cypress (5800) architecture, and it replaces that series by introducing a new performance level into AMD\u2019s mid-range. It also competes with nVidia\u2019s GTX460\/GTX470, and is the first Radeon series to drop the ATi moniker.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from a tweaked design, Barts is largely unchanged from Juniper\/Cypress. Improvements to anisotropic filtering and tessellation have been made, but double precision support is missing like in the 5700 series and lower. This feature is not needed for games in any way, so a leaner transistor budget can be achieved as a result. I personally think \u201ctrimming the fat\u201d like this is a good approach to gaming oriented hardware.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hardware<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intel Core i7 870 (3.2 GHz, turbo on, HT off).<\/li>\n<li>4 GB DDR3-1333 RAM (2\u00d72 GB, dual-channel).<\/li>\n<li>Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3 (Intel P55 chipset, F6 BIOS).<\/li>\n<li>nVidia GeForce GTX470 (1.28 GB, reference clocks).<\/li>\n<li>AMD Radeon 5770 (1 GB) &amp; 6850 (1 GB), reference clocks.<\/li>\n<li>Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic.<\/li>\n<li>30\u201d HP LP3065.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Software<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows 7 (64 bit).<\/li>\n<li>nVidia driver 260.99, high quality filtering, all optimizations off, LOD clamp enabled.<\/li>\n<li>AMD Catalyst 10.12, high quality filtering, surface optimization disabled (setting only available on 6850).<\/li>\n<li>DirectX June 2010.<\/li>\n<li>All games patched to their latest versions. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Settings<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>16xAF forced in the driver, vsync forced off in the driver.<\/li>\n<li>AA forced either through the driver or enabled in-game, whichever works better.<\/li>\n<li>Highest quality sound (stereo) used in all games.<\/li>\n<li>All results show an average framerate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"center\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-7021221536180758\";\n\/* 468x60, created 11\/11\/09 *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"1949837292\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 60;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"\nsrc=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Specs & The Card--><strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Specs<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the specs of the cards I\u2019ll be testing today:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22962\" title=\"Specs\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Specs.png?resize=280%2C375\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Specs.png 280w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Specs-224x300.png 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In comparison to the 5770, the 6850 has almost 70% more transistors and over 50% more die size. It also has a lot more pixel fillrate and memory bandwidth, though texturing performance and shader performance are only slightly higher.<\/p>\n<p>When compared to the GTX470, the nVidia card has over twice the die size and almost twice the transistors, but interestingly enough its specs aren\u2019t very different. Pixel fillrate and texturing are actually slightly lower on the GTX470, while memory bandwidth is slightly higher. The 6850 also has a lot higher theoretical shader performance, courtesy of its vec5 design.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Card<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The card is relatively short and doesn\u2019t overhang an ATX sized motherboard, given it\u2019s about 3 cm from the edge when installed. The card is longer than the 5770 but is shorter than the GTX470.<\/p>\n<p>Like the 5770, the card requires a single six-pin power connector which is connected to the front of the card. Said connector is much easier to install and remove compared to the 5770 because the area isn\u2019t engulfed by a shroud. The GTX470 requires two six-pin connectors in comparison, clearly indicating a higher TDP.<\/p>\n<p>The 6850 uses a dual-slot cooler which funnels the hot air out of the case, though a little escapes at the top of the card near the back-plate. In comparison to the GTX470, the 6850 is dead silent, and the difference is like night and day. Even when gaming on a really hot day I can barely hear it over my 800 rpm case fans, and only if I really strain to hear it.<\/p>\n<p>Subjectively I\u2019d even say it\u2019s quieter than the 5770, which is a fantastic achievement given it\u2019s still made on a 40 nm manufacturing process while having a bigger die size and transistor count. the 6850 comes close to the GTX470 in the former while outrunning it in the latter.<\/p>\n<p>The 6850 also performs exceptionally well in the OpenGL titles <em>Doom 3<\/em> and <em>Prey<\/em>, beating the GTX470 in both games. The GTX470 is in a higher performance and cost bracket, yet every game here either shows the 6850 being close to the GTX470, or beating it.<\/p>\n<p>The 6850\u2019s performance in <em>Quake 4<\/em> can only be described as phenomenal and it actually outruns my <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=20501&amp;page=7\" target=\"_blank\">GTX480 in the same situation<\/a>. This is especially disappointing in light of the 6850\u2019s amazing performance in OpenGL on the previous page. Nevertheless, we still see a good <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">20.29%<\/span> performance gain in these Direct3D titles.<\/p>\n<p>nVidia had performance problems in <em>Pacific Assault<\/em> with the launch drivers; performance has since improved on Fermi parts, though it\u2019s still somewhat lackluster compared to a GTX285. It looks like AMD has yet to follow suit as it turns in some very low scores here.<\/p>\n<p>AMD does offer excellent performance in <em>Half-Life 2<\/em> though, and the 6850 easily outruns the GTX470. <em>Half-Life 2<\/em> now uses the improved engine from <em>Episode 2<\/em> so it\u2019s a bit more demanding than the old version.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-7021221536180758\";\n\/* 468x60, created 11\/11\/09 *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"1949837292\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 60;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"\nsrc=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><!--pagetitle:Conclusion--><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The 6850 is a solid performance upgrade over the 5770 and is a lot faster overall. It\u2019s also a very quiet card without excessive length or power requirements. While it\u2019s generally not a match for the GTX470, it does put on a great show in certain titles and really makes the nVidia card sweat.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately driver issues prevent optimal performance in rare situations, to the point that the card is slower than the 5770 in two instances.
