We should love each other outside of time&#8230; detached.\u201d<\/em> <strong>\u2013 Steiner, La Dolce Vita (1960), Riama Films<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Life and love are fickle things.<\/p>\n<p>It seems like only yesterday that the netbook was going to give us the good life \u2026 <em>wait a minute it was!!!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The beautiful people at 1 Infinity changed all of that \u2026 <strong>again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>True, Jobs didn\u2019t bring his black shirts to CES (Consumer Electronics Show), but who knew?<\/p>\n<p>First, Apple allowed Verizon to preempt the marketplace by sorta\u2019, kinda\u2019 announcing that they would ( may, probably will) have the iPhone shortly.\u00a0\u00a0 Verizon strutted around the floor saying their infrastructure was ready to take on the massive influx of phone calling\/emailing\/video contact downloading customers.<\/p>\n<p>Folks from the four corners of the globe came and showed off their \u201cnew\u201d smartphones that had a strong resemblance to the iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>Then, there was a whole app zone where seasoned and hopeful developers showed off their creations to ensure there was an app for just about anything you wanted to\/could think about doing.<\/p>\n<p>But it was the totally new category of \u201ccomputers\u201d that produced the flurry of excitement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23318\" title=\"Untitled-2\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-21.jpg?resize=456%2C359\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-21.jpg 456w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-21-300x236.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 2 \u2013 Vegas Opening \u2013 <\/strong>Not everyone can make a TV set, but it felt like anyone\/everyone could make a tablet computer at this year\u2019s CES.\u00a0 More than 80 systems were introduced, all hoping to capture just a little of the iPad customer overflow.\u00a0 <strong>Illustration \u2013 SF Chronicle<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>More than 80 suppliers rushed to Las Vegas to show us the tablet that was poised to steal away huge portions of what the iPad would deliver \u2026 <strong><em>La Dolce Vita.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A few \u2013 very few \u2013 came close, but most looked like cheap, flimsy knock-offs running\u00a0 Android, Windows, you name it.\u00a0 Absent and waiting for early February was HP with their WebOS tablet (blame it on Hurd, he\u2019s gone).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Out of the Orchard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Think of it as moving from one lowly \u201cfruit\u201d company to 80 firms setting up a new system category.<\/p>\n<p>People who viewed them at CES agreed with Marchello, <em>\u201cYou are mother, sister, lover, friend, angel, devil, earth, home. \u201c<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a little hard to call it a PC though since depending on the \u201ccreator\u201d it will include \u00a0\u2026 it phone, computer, TV screen, game system, camera\/webcam and can\/bottle opener.Producers are rushing to squeeze into a market space that barely exists, but folks believe will go through the proverbial roof.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23319\" title=\"Untitled-3\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-31.jpg?resize=451%2C334\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-31.jpg 451w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-31-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 3 \u2013 Tablet Hockey Stick \u2013 <\/strong>The growth projections for media and tablet PCs are so enticing they are forcing netbook computers almost out of the picture and many experts claim they\u2019ll overtake\/surpass notebook systems.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>O.K., 17 million units last year isn\u2019t anything to sneeze at; but can the space support 80 firms (and Apple)?<\/p>\n<p>Most folks call anything that looks sorta\u2019, kinda\u2019 like an iPad a tablet, but there are really two product segments \u2013 media tablets (think iPad) and tablet PCs.<\/p>\n<p>Tablets are not a new category.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Filling a Void<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s offerings fill a void between smartphones (4-inch screen) and the notebook computer (13-15-inch screen).\u00a0 They\u2019ve been around for awhile in the form of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Tablet PCs<\/li>\n<li> eReaders (Kindle)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Media tablets:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> have color displays 5-14-inch<\/li>\n<li> processor is an x86 or ARM<\/li>\n<li> contain a mobile operating system<\/li>\n<li> have touch interfaces<\/li>\n<li> have a wide range of applications (their own app stores)<\/li>\n<li> WiFi and\/or cellular connectivity<\/li>\n<li> Long battery life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2010, portable device sales were\u00a0 518.5 million units:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> 52% smartphones<\/li>\n<li> 38.9% notebook computers<\/li>\n<li> 3.2% media tablets<\/li>\n<li> 5.9% other connected CE devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2010, 82.6% of the media tablets sold were iOS (Apple).\u00a0 The sliver remaining were Android.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts estimate that at the end of this year, the operating system spectrum will grow with Apple continuing to hold the major position.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-43.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23320\" title=\"Untitled-4\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-43.jpg?resize=434%2C339\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-43.jpg 434w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-43-300x234.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><strong>Figure 4 \u2013 OS Struggle \u2013 <\/strong>Apple will continue to hold a strong market share in the emerging tablet market, keeping its design, development, manufacturing system humming.\u00a0 In addition to its early hardware lead, Apple already has a vast selection of apps that seems to grow at breakneck speed.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8212; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The big consideration for users will be a closed garden operating system (iOS) and open OS (Android).\u00a0 The big difference though is that the applications you select for the iOS environment will most certainly work, even though you are \u201ccaptive\u201d in the environment.\u00a0 The open apps should work as advertised, but they will be run on different levels of hardware that will shape the user experience \u2013 good and\/or bad.<\/p>\n<p>By 2014, analysts expect 1.07 billion portable devices to be sold (pretty impressive).\u00a0 But the product mix won\u2019t favor tablets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23321\" title=\"Untitled-5\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-5.jpg?resize=458%2C334\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-5.jpg 458w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-5-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 5 \u2013 Big Market \u2013 <\/strong>All of the mobile device segments will expand rapidly.\u00a0 This will also create a strain on business IT departments where BYO (bring your own) work\/communications device \u2013 phone, computer, tablet, etc \u2013 is becoming the norm.\u00a0 The challenge for IT departments is that they have to protect the organization\u2019s networks and IP from malware, hacking, theft.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The available market for 80 + 1 companies shrinks rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>It reminded us of what one of the movie\u2019s actors said years ago, <em>\u201cBy 1965, there&#8217;ll be total depravity. How squalid everything will be.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pick the Winner(s)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The challenge for the consumer who wants a tablet right now is to look at the units available and determine which companies will be the survivors, because consolidation will occur.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike netbooks, with their early media frenzy and consumer enthusiasm because of the low cost and notebook \u201clook,\u201d the tablet market will have staying power.The problem was, the netbook was an anorexic notebook, which most people quickly found had severe work processing shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>Initial media tablet buyers will encounter similar issues.\u00a0 If you are going to use it to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> show, carry presentations, photos, videos, it\u2019s a great device<\/li>\n<li> take it to meetings for notes \u2026 works well<\/li>\n<li> web surfing \u2026 good<\/li>\n<li> reading books anywhere\/everywhere \u2013 fair but you\u2019re better off with an eReader like a Kindle (easier reading, relatively cheap)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There will be a world of apps \u2013 free and paid \u2013 that can be downloaded.\u00a0 The challenge will be to locate the specific apps you want\/need.<\/p>\n<p>The media tablet will not replace your smartphone, even if the tablet has a phone capability designed into it \u2013 dumb idea to hold something that large up to your ear, but go for it!<\/p>\n<p>The media tablet will not replace your notebook for real work \u2013 producing ppts, video post production, work processing, holding large volumes of materials for business, school.<\/p>\n<p>Kool-Aid drinkers swear the touch screen can be used for typing and work processing, but it gets smudged very quickly and for long typing periods it is awkward at best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ideal Device<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cExperts\u201d say the ideal media tablet has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> a 10-inch screen<\/li>\n<li> 32. 64, 128GB internal memory (it\u2019s only $$$)<\/li>\n<li> 2-4 USB ports (adding storage capacity or backup to external drive)<\/li>\n<li> SSD slot for photo download or\u2026<\/li>\n<li> ARM process (much lower power consumption)<\/li>\n<li> WiFi and wireless \u2013 use the WiFi though whenever\/wherever possible because wireless will be expensive.\u00a0 Some units are available without carrier wireless plans, which we think is the best approach for the user<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At CES, we talked at length with industry analysts, company executives and retail executives about the devices, market potential.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23322\" title=\"Untitled-6\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-6.jpg?resize=542%2C413\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-6.jpg 542w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-6-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Figure 6 \u2013 Worldwide Demand \u2013 <\/strong>The business and personal consumer demand for tablet systems is global, not regional.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sales expansion by area closely tracks notebooks and smartphones.\u00a0 <strong>Source &#8211; IDC<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, we\u2019re buying a new backpack so we can carry our fourth device:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Smartphone<\/li>\n<li> Media tablet<\/li>\n<li> Notebook computer<\/li>\n<li> eReader<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The difference will be how people use the devices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> People keep their smartphone close to them.\u00a0 They don\u2019t mind showing you photos, but they hang onto the device.<\/li>\n<li> Notebook users hold onto their computer.\u00a0 When they show a ppt to someone, they turn the unit to the guest and control the flow of the presentation, material.\u00a0 It\u2019s the same when showing photos\/videos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Walk up to anyone with a tablet (O.K., iPad) and they shove it into your hands; \u00a0have you go through the photos, videos, presentation.\u00a0\u00a0 On the plane going to\/from Las Vegas, people were playing video games and were happy to share their device. The same occurs when people are at school or in business meetings\/conferences.\u00a0 They gladly share the device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The media tablet won\u2019t replace the other devices, but will become one more device you carry\/use regularly.<\/p>\n<p>Prices will come down rapidly \u00a0for the non-Apple units.\u00a0 By the end of Q1 you\u2019ll see robust units with good power\/price performance below $500.<\/p>\n<p>Picking the winners from the losers will be the trick, but the tablet is here to stay.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23323\" title=\"Untitled-7\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-7.jpg?resize=429%2C322\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-7.jpg 429w, https:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Untitled-7-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 429px) 100vw, 429px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But right now we feel like Marchello <em>\u2026\u201d A man who agrees to live like this is a finished man, he&#8217;s nothing but a worm!
